Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement. Personal Reflection Clinical confidence, and independence are two components of nursing practice such that cannot be perfected through classroom education, self-study or by reading the evidence based literature. Throughout my nursing education, I have struggled with as many of clinical instructors have put it “being too hard on myself”. Morrell & Ridgway (2014) highlight how students’ perception of a lack of knowledge often contributes to ongoing anxiety. My tendency of being highly critical of my abilities, and having a consistent sense of anxiety associated with practicing independently has been an ongoing challenge for me. Reflecting upon how I have coped with the challenges of developing, and maintaining clinical confidence is …show more content…
Also, continually seek feedback from my preceptor has been crucial. Learning from my previous experiences, I have realized that a balance of ongoing constructive, and appreciative feedback has a very positive impact on both my learning, and confidence level. Therefore, during my first meeting with my preceptor, I discussed how important her feedback is to me, which has ensured that throughout my preceptorship I have received detailed, and timely
The skills acquisition concept poses a backwards movement in progress. The competent nurse in this case steps backward down the ladder to the novice level as an NP. Moreover, learning new skills, knowledge, and methods of treatment may technically be a step forward in a person’s career, but it is a step backwards in confidence and experience. The transition theory suggests transition as a never-ending process. The success of this course depends on a person’s support system and methods for coping. The transition theory has three stages: moving in, moving through and moving out. The moving in stage would be entering graduate education. Moving through is the process of completing classes and clinical time. The final stage, moving out, is beginning the first position as an NP. Successfully transitioning through these stages is heavily reliant on support, self-awareness and coping mechanisms. For instance, failure to begin the transition phase in graduate school is a prediction of the inability to properly shift into the role of NP (Poronsky,
I presume the role transition from academic nursing student to Graduate Nurse will be challenging and rewarding. In their findings, the researchers Doody, Tuohy & Deasy (2012) stated that for a successful transition NGNs need to be competent in a range of domains: interpersonal skills, managing workloads, providing health information, communication, and prioritising care delivery. Although I believe I am competent in the above specified areas, I am still not confident that I would get sufficient support in the hospital environment in terms of knowledge sharing, moral support and being given constructive feedback. Constructive criticism increases confidence in the work role and reduces stress in an individual (Doody, Tuohy & Deasy, 2012). In my previous professional placements I have been able to demonstrate my competency to work in the healthcare environment. I have received positive feedback from placement educators, buddy nurses and patients. Despite being competent in a range of the above areas NGNs may still face transition shock.
In-class discussions focused in on these various images of nursing and their damaging consequences. I have observed that I am not as assertive as I should be to dispute these negative images of nursing. I need to recognize when individuals make comments insinuating a negative portrayal of nurses. I will then proceed to educate these individuals on their uninformed views by demonstrating an understanding of my role as a nurse. This step will require knowledge and confidence; which I hope to acquire by the following strategies outlined in my knowledge confidence
Senior nursing students will complete a QSEN weekly clinical journal requirement learn how to self-assess their progress toward demonstrating these nationally-based competencies. The students will select a different competency each week to address and discuss how they applied that competency to patient care or how they hope to better achieve that competency as a graduate nurse. By the end of the clinical rotation each student will have had a chance to focus on each of the six QSEN competencies: patient centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety and informatics. The students’ reflection on their clinical experiences each week will teach them how to integrate the core competencies required before graduation. According to Use of self-evaluative practices puts the power back upon the student to direct and think critically about their learning (Dickensen, 2015). Demonstrating these competencies supports safety and excellence in clinical practice (QSEN,
It is important that students have the ability of being competent in a clinical setting. To be deemed competent in skills according to nursing regulations and requirements. This is a challenging factor for many students, as they enter transition period. This is due to students feel they do not have the desired clinical competency that promotes the skills and authorities of a registered nurse (Harsin, Soroor & Soodabeh, 2012). Clinical research studies have found that students do have the required expected levels of knowledge, attitude and behaviour’s. However, the range of practical skills aren’t sufficient for the range of practice settings (Evans, 2008). This research has also found that other evidenced based studies found that competency in nursing skills is still lacking (Evans, 2008). These skills are lacked by students and newly graduated nursing how are in the first or second year of
Canada health care system is struggling to provide quality care to the growing number of older adults in our acute and longterm care settings. This paper is a self-reflective analysis on caring for the older adult and how communication, clinical skills, and proper hygiene are essential in providing high quality care to older clients . This paper will help determine my weakness and strengths, so I can continue to grow as a Lisence Practical nurse and help Canada’s health care system.
I thought it was a very big challenge being a brand new nurse in the hospital. I would say that I struggled with confidence and overall stress for the first 6 months. I quickly realized that very few patients fit inside a clinical box that I had learned in textbooks. I was very task oriented, just from being overwhelmed with work load, and it was difficult for me to critically think in the way I knew I was capable of. A lot of this improved with time and supportive mentors. (5)
Teaching is part of being a nurse (Angelo, 2015). Being a nurse does not only end at providing full care to the patients but also includes proper teaching about the patients’ disease and medications. Patient’s education should happen when opportunities come, especially before discharge. By teaching them prior to discharge and providing them hand-outs, pamphlets or websites to find important information about their disease and medication, they will be ready to administer their own medications and be informed about their disease. Good personality is also vital in nursing practice (Angelo, 2015). It is not only what a nurse has learned in school or the skills and knowledge that he or she acquired from clinical instructors that are important, but also the whole make-up of a nurse’s own self. For example, a knowledgeable nurse is fully equipped with the skills in dressing a wound, but will never be an effective nurse if he or she does not know how to behave while performing the skill. The facial expressions and body language showing that a nurse is uncomfortable seeing the wound makes him or her unsuitable for the job. It is important that a nurse must not only limit his or her learning inside the skills lab or hospital (Angelo, 2015). Joining associations, programs, community services, and volunteering opportunities can expand nurses’ knowledge, skills, and abilities. The tone of voice must
“The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival” (Aristotle, n.d.)
The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Self awareness in nursing refers to how glowing nurses comprehend themselves, their strengths, weaknesses, attitude and ethics in order to better transact with their patients. Self- awareness includes review of self, together with self confidence. Self -regulation express beyond one`s emotion and being trustworthy. For nurses to be able to empathize with their patients and treat them with compassion, they have to be self aware. When nurses are self aware, they are capable to adapt to, or certainly change their attitudes and deed in order to understand how unusual people take care of them hence improving the nurse- patient relationship. Nurses must reflect carefully on whether they can sustain in dependence in caring for a client and whether the relationship interferes with gathering the client’s needs. It is also essential to be sure that providing care to family and friends does not interfere with the care of other clients or with the dynamics of the health care group. Before making the conclusion, the nurse may possibly wish to discuss the situation with colleagues and the employer.
*As my first year in the nursing program comes to a close, I am to write this assessment based upon my abilities in each of the listed outcomes. I know I have much to learn, but I have also gained a tremendous amount of knowledge in the short amount of time I have been a part of this program.
A study conducted by academics found that undergraduate nurses feel reflection is the key to changing and improving their practice. (Bulman, Lathlean, & Gobbi, 2011). Reflection assists nurses to enhance their nursing abilities by encouraging them to reflect on negative experiences, in order to overcome similar experiences in the future. This essay will aim to demonstrate the importance of reflection within nursing, additionally providing me with a platform to reflect on my decision to become a nurse. I will begin by reflecting upon the factors that influenced me to choose nursing, followed by an explanation of the benefits that reflection has on nursing. The essay will conclude by summarising how I will put reflection in practice throughout
I do not have to look back very far to see a time when my self-confidence as a nurse was at an all-time low, reminiscent of that nursing school student. Almost a year and a half ago, I walked through the doors of Sunrise Adelante Clinic as a triage nurse with responsibilities for medical decision making, clinical care, and triage. Prior to walking through that door, I had
Nursing is not only a career, but a way to give back to the community by enhancing and maintaining the health of other individuals. Throughout my clinical experiences last year, I witnessed kindness and selflessness among many nurses that have impacted and helped shape my future career choices and life immensely. Throughout this semester, I will assess myself on my nursing skills and will constantly try to strengthen my assessments, communication, clinical judgment and patient safety skills using the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument (CCEI, 2014). I believe that my experiences at Mayo will enabled me to find several of my strengths that I will obtained throughout the semester along with finding my weaknesses that I can work on for next semester. I am
