Leadership is a term that takes on a different meaning and visualization for each individual. There may be a standard written definition of “leadership” but to each person it may portray something unique. What leadership means in a New York City office, might not mean the same as leadership at the University of Iowa Hospital. In my opinion, leadership acts a catalyst for new improvements, new accomplishments and meeting goals, which is why leadership is so vital to healthcare. Leadership is necessary for hospitals and staff to continuously progress with new structures, policies, and quality of care. An example of a leader on a unit would be a charge nurse, and a follower would be a staff nurse. They both have the similar goal in common of providing safe care to patients but they may perform different tasks in achieving this goal. The charge nurse makes patient assignments based on nurse experience, patient acuity, and any procedures needed throughout the day. The charge nurse’s leadership affects how the shift will play out and which nurses will be caring for whom. The nurse is the follower, and accepts responsibility for the patients and has direct interaction with them. In this example both the leader and follower have the same goal of providing safe effective care, while their actions toward achieving this goal are different. Although nurse and charge nurse roles differ, they influence each other in many ways as well. Smith-Trudeau (2017) discusses the importance of followers influence on leaders by giving feedback, challenging ideas and shaping the leaders decisions. This shows that followers have just as much say in decision making as leaders. If the nurse in the above example feels as if she will not be able to handle her patient load, the nurse can discuss and explain her reasoning with the leader, so that the leader can make an informed decision and reassign patients. I have nothing but great experiences with my clinical instructors, which inspired me to one day, fulfill that position for future nursing students. My instructors have demonstrated strong leadership with their communication skills, commitment to helping me learn, and acting as a role model. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017, pp. 28) With my aspiration to become a clinical instructor for students and then one day a nurse manager, I know that my areas of communication and confidence need improvement in order to work as a strong leader. It is important for nurses to be well organized and if leaders are strong in organization, the team will be as well. “Nurse leaders at every level and position must develop organizational and management skills, whether they are managing human, fiscal, policy, time, material or other resources” (Canadian Nurse Association, 2008, p. 9). “Exerting good management skills is part of being a good leader – and leadership skills are necessary for good management” (Canadian Nurses Association, 2008, p. 9). When nurses are able to organize their time, they are able to assess their patients thoroughly. Following these assessments, nurses are able to organize and prioritize which patient is in most need of assistance or immediate attention. If a leader is not well organized themselves, patient care may be affected. Practical Nurses like any other nurses need to have strong organizational skills, especially, if a practical nurse is working on a demanding, fast paced unit. Patient’s health and well-being depends on their ability to manage information and multi-task. It is easy to become overwhelmed and make mistakes if a practical nurse lacks in good organizational skills. Being well organized is even more important when working short staffed. Charge nurses are usually not in a defined permanent charge nurse role as delineated by a job description, but rather rotate through if assigned for their shift (Krugman & Smith, 2003). Additionally, many charge nurses enter their role through default (because they are the most experienced or tenured on their shift) and without formal training (Sherman, 2005). Research conducted by Sherman (2004) indicates that it is becoming more difficult to convince nurses to step up to the plate to assume leadership responsibilities even at the charge nurse level. Additionally, the lack of well-prepared charge nurses may lead to increased nurse dissatisfaction, increased nurse turnover, litigation (Mahlmeister, 1999), decreased patient satisfaction, and potential for increased error. Nurse leaders who are now examining leadership effectiveness at every level have found that charge nurses not only need clinical expertise but effective leadership skills as well (Connelly, Yoder, & Miner-Williams, 2003; Turner, 2005).
In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.
Hospital administrators will charge nurse leaders with ensuring that patient positive outcomes prevail while also controlling overhead. Nurse leaders are specially trained just for this task. Clinical Nurse Leaders are the experts that America’s patients will rely on to keep them safe and healthy in hospital settings.
The nursing career has a growing workforce, spurred on by the high demand for caregivers. The growing need for nurses has caused in influx of new nurses, graduating from school and ready to begin their career. Although there are many different work settings for nurses, one universal aspect of assisting new nurses is nursing leadership. According to Business Dictionary.com, leadership is defined as the individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively. It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.
A manager’s leadership style must influence staff and others to take them seriously. A manager sets the tempo for the employees’ work ethic. Effective leadership from healthcare managers is important to the modern healthcare reform (Kumar, 2013). Leadership engagement in healthcare explains how a problem could affect a healthcare organization. Managers that hold leadership roles must adopt a certain style that can be functional for his or her initial organization to be successful. Performance improvement can be a very serious aspect of leadership engagement (Croxton, 2011). Healthcare managers need to have people from all areas involved to work effectively. Without the consistency of getting all staff and physicians involved, the organization may suffer greatly.
In the nursing profession, strategic thinking, effective decision making and delegation is important. With this, the goal of providing quality care is key and can be accomplished through a theory called servant leadership. In this style of leadership and management, the entire team has input into decision making based on the organization’s values and ideals. In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
Leaders in healthcare have so many daily obligations that they have to meet and be responsible for. Today’s leaders have to keep up with scheduling, flexing, covering vacation, meetings, their department as a whole, and make sure everything runs smoothly. With the ever changing healthcare nurses have to be up to date on new technology, training, and new education. The department head is not only a supervisor; she is a bedside nurse meeting multiple demands. She takes on tasks that include everything from the bedside nurse, to unit meetings, to charge nurse, and to scheduling, just to name a few. Speaking to leaders and managers in healthcare today the stress is at all time high from the new healthcare reform, nursing shortages, and meeting daily productivity.
Being at the apex of the chain of command, the administrative nursing supervisor has numerous responsibilities including but never limited to staffing, conflict resolution, and or crisis. In many circumstances, an administrative nursing supervisor must make timely, prioritizing decisions based on the resources available at any given time. The ultimate outcome ideally is patient and staff safety, and positive patient experiences and outcomes. Throughout the different departments in the facility, there are several governing unions with guidelines and contractual requirements. The facility also has policies and procedures that must be adhered to. Katie remains updated on all guidelines by attending conferences, in-services and administrative meetings. Eason, (2010) stated that, “lifelong learning allows nurses to develop confidence and skill in service provision that is evident to patients, their families, and other health care practitioners” (p.157). I believe that Katie is proficient, has strong leadership skills and is capable of unraveling conflict while following
