The first week of lecture was a little confusion for me but also exciting because it meant I was starting clinical. The drug test was hard for me because I had just gone to the restroom before class but I drank a lot of water during classed was successful my second time at the end of class. I made my self a little sick drinking that much water. Getting my scrubs was extremely exciting and made me feel like a real nurse. I think it would help me a lot if we where able to wear our scrubs to class when we have clinical right after because there is not a lot of time between class and clinical. I find lecture and the foundations book very interesting and useful. I am looking forward to using the ATI book along with this course as well. The first
clinical in Sim Lab was very informative all the information seemed very helpful. We went over what to expect for clinical which made me less nervous about it. I really enjoyed the first hand nursing stories. Sim Lab made me feel a little more prepared to walk in to clinical. I felt coached through some difficult situations and how to do to protect yourself. I love the small learning environment that clinical & Sim Lab presents us with. I highly value this lab time and find it beneficial. Receiving the blue nursing bag made me feel like a child on Christmas day. Sim Lab the first week was pretty easy but still useful. We watched some informational videos. We also talked about taking how to take all the vital signs except blood pressure because we ran out of time. After discussing the oral, rectal, temporal, and tympanic thermometers we practiced oral and tympanic on each other. I highly value this lab time and find it beneficial. Receiving the blue nursing bag made me feel like a child on Christmas day. I also think it is very nice that we can access the teaching videos for review whenever needed.
The role of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) in health care has been identified as a critical role in the goal to provide high-quality health care. APRNs have a bigger role to play in the health care system and it is important that students are provided with relevant and valuable knowledge as well as experience that improve their abilities. Achieving course objectives are critical for APRNs with the goal of contributing positively to the health care system. As a future APRN, I place high priority on life-long learning and the development of other people’s skill sets. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. My sixteen week class in English 111. I was really nervous about this class. Because English has never been my strong point. This class has hard, but fun all at the same time. I learn a lot from this class. Meanwhile,the first day of class you handed a paper with a question on it. “The first thing I want to say to you who are students is that you must not think of being here to receive an education; instead, you will do much better to think of being here to claim one.” Even though putting my all in what I have learned, claiming my education with hard work because using the skills of the meal plan, as we write to different audiences and learning to be a Critically thinker as I start becoming a critically-Literate Citizenship.
Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.
The CNA program is intense and vigorous. Everyone has their academic strengths and weaknesses and for me the book part was the hardest part. Not only was all the information new but it was presented in a condensed format so you had a lot to learn very quickly. I thought it was a very big challenge being a brand new nurse in the hospital. I would say that I struggled with confidence and overall stress for the first 6 months. I quickly realized that very few patients fit inside a clinical box that I had learned in textbooks. I was very task oriented, just from being overwhelmed with work load, and it was difficult for me to critically think in the way I knew I was capable of. A lot of this improved with time and supportive mentors. (5)
Ever since I was little I remember playing games where I would fight the bad guy and win the girl in the end. This never seem to affect me or make me wonder what small effect it had on my thought process. In games such as Zelda, call of duty, assassin creed, gears of war, Mario, and even halo you play as a white heterosexual male. The idea of playing this way never seemed to phase me as a young child. As I grew up and became more aware of the difference of people and the need for other as well as myself a need to be able to connect and find one 's self in different place such as games, movies, and TV shows. I became aware of the one sided views that video games seem to have. Then I realized that it was seen as acceptable to only have the one sided displayed due to the lack of speaking out on the need for change.
As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. Feelings As learning is a lifelong process, I’m sure there are many things I need to improve and learn to better myself. However, the lessons I learned during the course as a nursing student shall always remain as a bedrock for my future development.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
New nurses are faced with discomfort as soon as they enter the profession. Hence, it is suggested that precautions be taken even before nurses graduate. The educational system should consider the involvement of clinical staff in the teaching process. This will enable student nurses to meet actual nurses prior to entering the profession (Goodare, 2015). In other words, to make the transition easy, nursing education must include actual exposure to the clinical practice where student nurses are required to not merely become observers but actually participate in the process of providing care. I will fund my exhibit through donations and sales. I would reach out to the community, explain my exhibit and ask for donations, but I would primarily generate revenue through selling items related to the exhibit like prints of the works being shown, creative posters, key chains, t-shirts and other mementos. Additionally, I would have bake sales and fairs and other activities of a similar nature.
