For the majority of my preschool observation, the children were outside. It was very hard to get a good idea of what they did at this preschool and what the kids and teachers were saying. Just from my observation, I realized how different my preschool was. I went to St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Preschool in Shepherd. It was very different because my class was very small. It had eleven people in it, while the class I observed had about twenty people in it. Also, these children go to school all day and they will not all end up in the same graduating class someday. At my preschool we only went for half days and the majority of the students that went to my preschool graduated with me. I think both of the preschools had pros and cons. All day school is most likely better because students will get used to going to school all day and be more prepared for kindergarten. Having a smaller class may be better because it is more one on one. The one thing I think that was really good about my preschool is that we all graduated high school together. I noticed the staff love their jobs. For example, they were all smiling and most were even interacting with the students. One of them was pulling kids in a wagon the entire recess and that shows dedication to their job. Another one of the helpers were pushing kids on the swing, one of them looked like she was doing something with the girls but I could not tell what she was doing. Having helpers and teachers that are involved is important because then the kids know they are in a safe environment. Overall, I was very impressed with the infant room I observed. To start off the day, the teacher warmly welcomed all of the children and parents. The teacher asked the parent how their night was since they left the daycare the night before, when they ate last, had a diaper change, and when did they wake up. I made me feel like the teacher really cared about the children even when they where not in her care and waited to make sure everything went ok at home. Toddlers are the epitome of curiosity and energy. From ages 1 – 3, toddlers are always on the go and want to learn about everything in their world. As with infants, no two are alike; each toddler is unique in his or her developmental stages, and each accomplishes milestones at different times. “Although children develop at different rates, there are common stages of development that serve as guidelines for what most children can do by a certain age” (Groark, McCarthy & Kirk, 2014). As seen in the hatfieldmomof3 (2011) video, one observes toddlers at play and can determine the age of the toddlers by their actions and the milestones they have accomplished.
There are about a million and one things to look into when parents are deciding if they will send their child to preschool. The history of preschool shows a lot of interesting information about how preschools have changed and how they affect students. It is said that preschool will give students a head start. There is also the price to think about when sending children off to preschool. But those are just a few of the many factors people may think about before sending their little one off to school. Some other things that are not usually brought up right up front are locations of preschools, the curriculum taught, the types of teachers, etc. People generally just think about the cost and the fact they have a place to send their child to learn while they work.
The daycare that I visited was Rosemont Daycare and Preschool. This center is faith based and I was able observe the “Duck Class” which was the age group of four and five year olds. I went to observe on February 11th and 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 and the 18th from 3:00 to 6:00. On the 11th and 16th, there were a total of 12 children in the Duck class. At 9:00 the children were engaged in circle time meaning that the children were learning about their bible verse for that month which was “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” The children then discussed what they thought that meant. On the 11th I was present to see the children, the ones I decided to observe were Kali, Roslyn, Fiona, and Brayden. When the children were doing crafts I sat near the counter island in the class room so I was out of the way but still able to see and hear what the kids were doing and saying at the table.
There are a few types of preschool programs. First there are structured preschool programs that focus on emphasizing an actual school setting and classroom activities in order to prepare the child for kindergarten or first grade. There are also day care centers, which are not as structured as preschool centers. Daycare’s focus mainly on child’s development through social interaction with children and caregivers. Then there are head start programs that are geared to give children a foot in the right direction in order to be ready for preschool or kindergarten. The right kind of childcare can be a wonderful opportunity to promote the profound learning children experience from birth through age five (Selecting child care, 2002).
The staff is committed to their school and they are trying to improve it as possible.
Preschool isn't just a place for parents to drop off their children while they are at work for the day. It is in preschool where children learn the necessary skills needed to succeed in school and in life. With high-quality preschools and qualified teachers the possibilities are endless. It's not only the children who reap the benefits of Early Childhood Education; their parents, fellow peers, and even society feel the positive effects of quality preschool programs. Children enrolled in quality preschool programs are more likely to succeed academically and socially when they are older.
I observed at St. Eve’s Learning Center location in their preschool room. The center has a naturalistic feel to the environment and all of the staff is friendly and welcoming. The classroom displayed best practices, modern theories and research, and followed expected standards set by their accreditations.
I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl named Luna. Jeffrey has taken quite a liking to being a big brother. He likes to hold and rocker her and helps with feeding her. Jeffrey is still a slow-to warm child. He can communicate fairly well and is now using mostly complete sentences and seems to understand most of what I say. He occasionally makes errors of overregularization. He has taken an interest in music and singsongs even though he usually repeats a certain part a lot. I encourage this by taking him to local performances of children’s musicals. Jeffrey has learned the routines pretty well and is reasonably cooperative for his age. He is rarely aggressive to adults or other children. Jeffrey’s fantasy play has become more elaborate and sometimes includes superheroes or cartoon
Kevin seems to enjoy the guitar and continues to be actively engaged in classroom activities. Presently, we’re working on keeping a steady beat while playing different strumming patterns (beat/rhythm discrimination). I look forward to working with Kevin in the second half of the school year.
Over the course of the semester, we were asked to maintain a record of our observations of comprehension and composition learning tasks that take place in our classrooms. Luckily, I was placed in the Leighton Learning Community so I attend Leighton elementary school, right down the road from the college. This is an amazing experience because I am able to spend a lot more time inside the classroom, which also results in me observing many things I would not normally in a regular block two placement. Instead of the standard one day a week for three hours, I spend my entire day at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
In electing to observe a kindergarten class, I was hoping to see ‘real world’ examples of the social development, personality types and cognitive variation found within the beginning stages of “Middle Childhood” as discussed within our text.
The class that I observed was a special education class. I chose to do this because I feel sometimes we as counselors lack the in support special education. So I wanted to be an outsider and a future counselor to observe to see what I know and what I can do. The staff that was present during this observation was Gerado Lara. I was observed that classroom for most of the day, from 9:10AM-2:00PM. In the classroom there were about 10 students all of the students had variety of special needs. There wasn’t a subject specifically being taught but Mr. Jerry was working with his student on his verbal and communication skills.
