Over the course of the semester, we were asked to maintain a record of our observations of comprehension and composition learning tasks that take place in our classrooms. Luckily, I was placed in the Leighton Learning Community so I attend Leighton elementary school, right down the road from the college. This is an amazing experience because I am able to spend a lot more time inside the classroom, which also results in me observing many things I would not normally in a regular block two placement. Instead of the standard one day a week for three hours, I spend my entire day at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am in a fifth grade classroom at Leighton Elementary. The third station involves using Google Classroom. The students have to watch a video regarding what they are learning in any of their subjects, and then post a short response to a question posed by the teacher on Google Classroom. I think this is definitely a great way to incorporate technology that is beneficial to the student into the classroom. The last station is having the students reading a good fit book independently to themselves. I thought this was a great set-up at the beginning of the semester, however my views have changed. Although the students are supposed to pick a good fit book, many of the students do not unfortunately and the host teacher never really checks to make sure the books are at an appropriate level for the …show more content…
Additionally, I would tend to ask questions during his planning periods about how he put together his lessons, and how he went about grading the students work. My host teacher stated that most of his lessons come directly from EngageNY, and this is evident based on the worksheets and topics covered. I noticed that he strictly follows the modules, topics, and lessons on the website. He even has a binder where they are all printed out and located. I think the concept of Kobod’s box was a good idea, but adjustments would have to be made in order to make sure everyone could participate. I think doing random acts of kindness helps students learn about subjects that can tie into school, as well as real life situations. I liked that Torey used cooking as a way to teach the students about reading and math, as many recipes feature both. I also think cooking activities can be more fun for students as they are hands on. I also liked Torey’s use of imagination to transport the children to oceans or the wilderness. I believe this activity sparks creativity in children and would be a good technique to teach them about adjectives and imagery. My favorite of Hayden’s techniques and the one I would implement is the of traffic lights to signal a student’s behavior for the day. I have seen this technique used in many classrooms I have observed and it is a good visual way to keep student’s behavior in
For classrooms small and compact the added Vizio smart TVs that were bright and high resolution. These Tvs were family movie theater quality that are good with dealing with glare. In class rooms large and with more overhead room the add more a projector above smart board which is a more of a in one unit that also higher quality and brighter. This setup is much better the previous where the projects was on a desk next the board so when people walk by it interferes where as this it doesn't and keeps cables out of the way. This year they added a new kind of system that was a streaming device it is made by Google and it is called the Chromecast. The Chromecast allows teachers and staff to broadcast from their computer without cables, wirelessly across the school. This also allows teachers to be able to teach classrooms without having to go bring their laptops and for staff to direct meetings without having to have a massive system of equipment. The Chromecast is a small compact HDMI machine able to plug it right into the projector or TV so it is hidden and out of sight. It is also able to access Google equipment including Google documents and much more so they're able to stream that and YouTube which will be helpful for learning
Church’s class plays a vital role in the student’s learning. Everything that surrounds the students on the walls has to do with subject matter and student learning. In the rear of the classroom, the whole wall is an interactive wall where the morning lessons take place. On the wall there is a calendar and a weatherboard in which the students write on with dry erase marker. Every school day the students go through the days of the week; they also talk about the weather each day. Likewise, in the classroom, there is a word wall that includes the spelling language for the week, the alphabet, punctuation and sentence structure posters. Students depend on the word wall to help them with writing. I have noticed students looking at the word wall to get ideas and information to be an effective writer. One of the most important insights of a lesson plan comes from the students. We went into our third observation on March 2, 2018 to discuss how the students think the first lesson went. We asked many groups and gained some great insight. The first question we asked to each group is how the lesson went and why. The students all stated that think it went well, or it went was fun. They
The classroom I observed Tommy is in has about 20 children and two teachers. The age range for this class is between 36- 48 months and Tommy is 47 months. The purpose of this observation is to assess the child to see what appropriate skills based on their age they are able to accomplish. If children are struggling to meet the appropriate brackets the teacher is to set goals that are to help the children become successful and accomplish the goals. In this paper I will be talking about the Carolina Assessment Log and what SMART goals I think may be appropriate for Tommy.
By using a journal we were able to capture many key points that we could refer to later. We continued this journaling process in math. As we work through math problems we looked at the relationships of numbers and what certain processes meant. “Aha moments” were posted on sticky notes and place on a KWL chart or recorded in journals. This was used as a way for students to document what they learned that day. At the end of the day each student contributed to a class reflection of the day. This reflection also found its way in their writing

Two of the classrooms simply had the desks in rows, and it did seem to work for those particular classes. The eighth-grade teacher had her desks grouped together into twos, so that each person had a partner. This did seem to work for most of the students, but I heard one student complain several times because he did not have a partner. He did become a distraction to the entire class on one occasion due to the complaining. All three classroom setups had easy access to the door or other class areas and the teachers and students could move about easily if needed. The teachers all used promethium boards which were in the front of the room. Google tablets were in the back of the classrooms in an easily accessible area. Through my observations, I now understand that creating an organized, efficient classroom is essential for student and teacher
I’ve made my observation at library. I took a seat at the yellow zone of library and watch what people doing there. Generally, most of them are students, and more than half of them were doing work. I observed their behaviors, expressions and dressing. The following are the details and my own analysis.
The school that I visited was new. It was the first year of the school opening. The school board had combined two schools into one, so the students had to adjust to their new environments and new individuals. They seemed to be getting along well with each other. Since the school is new the teacher has to adjust to new problems that araise. Times for the subjects and times for using the computer labs change. So the teacher must always be fixable for anything. In this observation of this classroom I learned about the enjoyment of teaching. How you have to adapt to each of the students.
In a Grade two classroom a teacher has incorporated a show and tell session each to provide the students with the opportunity to share their current interests and knowledge on topics of their choice, promoting student-centred learning and social interactions within the class (Biermeier, 2015; Blaise, 2011). Today is Eliza's show and tell, the teacher approaches Eliza's parents at morning drop off to see how Eliza and the family are settling into their new home. With consideration to Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) ecological systems model, the teacher understands that mesosystems are the connections between each setting that includes the child, school, and home and that these relationships have an influence upon a child’s learning. I observed an upper level biology class, in which the teacher is applying a combination of collaborative (team-based) learning, problem-solving approaches, discussions on "what-if" scenarios and student-teaching.
The students that I observed in the classroom were of middle to high school. I went to see 8th, freshman, 10th , and seniors classes, they seemed excited and very curious to why I was there. The middle school was more alive and rambunctious while I observed them. The High school kids were more relaxed, more comical. Some were paying attention while others seemed tuned out to the lecture or involved in socialization with friends within the class. By the end of the class Mr. Hasgil had restored the attention of everyone by using tactics such as history jeopardy with candy as the prize with the high school kids. In both he middle school and high school the kids were mostly Caucasian with a mixture of black, Asian , and Hispanic in the classes.
My classes' abilities range from high to very low. The highest of my students can read, speak in full descriptive sentences, respond creatively, and appropriately to thought provoking questions. Whereas, my lowest students know only a couple letters of the alphabet, have difficulty coming up with meaningful sentences and often answer questions with statements that have no bearing on the subject matter. My biggest challenge when planning for this period of instruction was to find a way to actively involve all of my students and offer success for everyone, regardless of skill level. I decided to have stations where 4 students, at a time, would be engaged in stimulating activities and where there would be very little "wait"...
