I’ve made my observation at library. I took a seat at the yellow zone of library and watch what people doing there. Generally, most of them are students, and more than half of them were doing work. I observed their behaviors, expressions and dressing. The following are the details and my own analysis. I took a round table sit down, and noticed that there was a mid-east woman was chatting with her friend on my front left side. For the reason that why I said she was from mid-east, she wore a turban on her head. And she dressed a long skirt which was Arabic style that I saw in movies. In a further site, all I could see is that three persons were on their computers by the window. There are high hell seats and small round tables by the window, …show more content…
This area is right beside the Starbucks cafeteria. People sat freely and talked with their friends. It was obvious that this is also a relaxing zone but for group of people. After I turned my head on my right side, I found a weird scene. A tough wearing shorts was on his IPhone. It is autumn in Houghton, but actually the temperature is like winder if in other places. However, I found that guy is muscular. From the muscles of his body, I know that he must be a sports fanatic. On his right hand, he wore a black thick glove. It was no reason for keep from cold weather. He wore shorts and only got one hand on glove. I would say that he wore that for protecting his right hand, and his right hand was probably hurt. Finally, on my right hand end site, it is the computer area. Comparing with the people sitting by the window, people who were on computers have serious face expressions, and I can find that their eyes stared at the screens. As far as I am concerned, they were working on their assignments on those computers. Some of them also wrote on papers after watching screens for seconds. Moreover, I found that there were two persons that support their heads by fists. I was wondering that they may get curious of the assignments or stuck by a specific problem. Generally, their face expressions are not that relaxed comparing with people standing by the window and other areas of the
Inside the coffee shop, a great deal of thought has been put into spatial distribution. The space is small, but every square centimeter is utilized for sitting, ordering and preparing and displaying food. The floor plan allows customers to move in a structured way to order and then sit down or leave. The floor plan is similar to a continuous circular flow of costumers, that starts when you walk in the door and ends when you leave. Like an assembly line, this suggests that Canadian culture is very rigid and structured. The sitting area consists of small tables that let only three people sit comfortably at one time. The sitting chairs are upright with a hard surface; they're not comfortable and relaxing in the least bit. Upbeat easy rock music plays in the background, this music is very safe in that all ages can identify and accept it while still loud enough to not hear the noisy kitchen in the back. Bright lights, along with the chairs, tables and music create an atmosphere and mood that does not allow people to get too comfortable.
While communicating with another human being, one only has to examine the other’s face in order to comprehend what is being said on a much deeper level. It is said that up to 55 percent of a message’s meaning can be derived from facial expression (Subramani, 2010). These facial manipulations allow thoughts to be expressed in ways that are often difficult to articulate verbally, with the face demonstrating “the thoughts of the mind, and the feelings of the heart” (Singla). Many expressions are said to universal, particularly those showing happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and...
The National Gallery of Art (NGA) houses some of the most prolific art in the world. Around four million people visit the NGA each year to gaze upon the collection of close to 130,000 items on display making it the sixth most popular art museum in the world (Lowe, 2013). The amount of foot traffic experienced by the museum provides the ideal setting to observe people as they move about the museum. The purpose of this paper is to observe human behavior in a social setting. A location in the west building of the NGA was selected for its vantage point to observe people as they transitioned through the museum. People were studied for a time of twenty-five minutes and observations were conducted to examine their demeanor, reactions, and interactions with other individuals. The twenty-five minute observation time established the behavior of individuals at the NGA. The second part of this observation was to break a social norm and observe the reaction of people when the norm was violated. This paper is a detailed account of observations made at the NGA and examines these interaction using sociological concepts.
The ladies in there are wearing revealing outfits and veils covering their faces. A veil is a religious part of the Arab culture. "The veils are see-through turning something that is supposed to be religiously affiliated into a sexual innuendo. The veil is used as a form of seduction, further arousing curiosity.”(Nelson, Alyssa).
One of my favorite places located along Fifth Avenue is Starbucks, a coffee shop offering many different types of coffees, teas, and snacks. I frequently find my way down to this coffee shop after school meetings, on weekends, or on days when I just ne...
The bookworm or magazine reader, coffee in hand, provides entertainment through the quirky habits and mannerisms he practices throughout his sojourn at Barnes and Noble. The book-reading customer of the attached coffee shop sits at his table, sipping on a frozen coffee while reading a magazine or book that he does not intend to pay for. He uses Barnes and Noble as a library, walking in, selecting a book or a collection of magazines, and seating himself at one of the many reading areas; the adjacent Starbucks Coffee is the most popular loc...
To be successful in business, one must be able to perceive and use nonverbal cues to one’s advantage. It has been noted by communication experts that when two people have face-to-face communication only a small percentage of the message is delivered through the words they use. The majority of the message is understood and received through nonverbal communication behaviors. These behaviors include gestures, postures, facial expressions, and even clothing; all of which can interfere with the verbal messages that a person is trying to deliver. Although, the importance of nonverbal cues has not been examined extensively in the workplace, it makes sense that they would have a strong impact on any communication both in and out of the realm of business. The ability to perceive and to use nonverbal cues to one’s advantage in the workplace gives the business individual the necessary skill and power to achieve their desired level of success.
Starbucks is a company in which purchases and roasts high quality whole bean coffees and sells them along with fresh, rich-brewed, Italian style espresso beverages, a variety of pastries and confections, and coffee-related accessories and equipment (starbucks.com). During my environmental scan in which took place at the Starbucks on the corner of Fair and Newport across the street from vanguard, I noticed many things in which where never brought to my attention in prior stays and visits at Starbucks; such as the many social groups in which choose to have their meetings at Starbucks. Thus in this essay we will discuss things in which many people do not really notice when going to Starbucks.

Body language is a part of effective communication. Three main body language parts are that posture, facial expression and gestures. Posture conveys message emphatically by a person (Broudstein, 2001). The message also can be delivered by studying one’s posture. For example, when a team members not sit in a proper posture that shows him/her could not able to receive any information that have been delivered by project manager. Regarding to Broudstein (2001), a person face can communicate with others by the expressions such as smiling, strong, confident, concerning on something. For instance, when a person shows that he/she is not angry he/she will smile. Expression may be effective communication because people can easily understand one’s emotion by looking at the expression. Sometimes, by smiling to others it will express positive vibes and confidence to convey message as people will sincerely listen to the message. For example, when a project manager smiles during a briefing session to the team members that will give him/her confidence in delivering the briefing and team members will focus to understand the message that has been
When presented a research project, students go to google and search the topic resulting in over one million websites. “They tended to over use google and misuse scholarly databases. They preferred simple database searches to other methods of discovery” (Kolowich). Many college students do not have time to sit in a library and do research. They need to find the fastest and easiest way to finish a project. “Now more than ever, academic librarians should seek to ‘save time for the reader’” (Kolowich). Librarians either spend too much time hovering over students or not at all. “Librarians tend to overestimate the research skills of some of their students, which can result in interactions that leave students feeling intimated and alienated” (Kolowich). Our campus library is small and not efficient, so students do not want to spend a lot of time in it. The result means their work is getting half done and they aren’t taking it serious. The campus library should post pictures, signs and the librarians should walk around to offer help to those in need of time management and ways to get their work done faster. Also, the campus library needs more study rooms and control the amount of people who aren’t using the library for the right
The school that I visited was new. It was the first year of the school opening. The school board had combined two schools into one, so the students had to adjust to their new environments and new individuals. They seemed to be getting along well with each other. Since the school is new the teacher has to adjust to new problems that araise. Times for the subjects and times for using the computer labs change. So the teacher must always be fixable for anything. In this observation of this classroom I learned about the enjoyment of teaching. How you have to adapt to each of the students.
I attended a second grade class at Smallville Elementary on February 22, 2014; the class began promptly at 0855. There are 26 children in this second grade class. There are 15 male students and 11 female students. The student diversity is 2 Hispanics, 1 African-American, 1 East Indian, and 1 New Zealander (White but with an extreme accent). Three children were left-handed.
The students that I observed in the classroom were of middle to high school. I went to see 8th, freshman, 10th , and seniors classes, they seemed excited and very curious to why I was there. The middle school was more alive and rambunctious while I observed them. The High school kids were more relaxed, more comical. Some were paying attention while others seemed tuned out to the lecture or involved in socialization with friends within the class. By the end of the class Mr. Hasgil had restored the attention of everyone by using tactics such as history jeopardy with candy as the prize with the high school kids. In both he middle school and high school the kids were mostly Caucasian with a mixture of black, Asian , and Hispanic in the classes.
Most students in their high school years of around fifteen to seventeen account for the highest percentage of library users as compared to college students. However, teens are faced with reading attitudes that eventually affect their overall response to reading. College life on the other hand is more of a freedom-based society that allows the students to choose the reading time and frequency. It is however also a challenge since this life involves a lot more than just reading, but a struggle to balance what one has on their plate.
