I can remember the first day I stepped foot into the weight room at William Horlick high school, I was instantly addicted. I was a little intimidated because everyone on the powerlifting team had been there for multiple years and were bigger and stronger than I was, but that later went away when I realized we all shared the same goal and everyone helped each other achieve it. Powerlifting is good because it builds your self-discipline, confidence, social skills, and allows you to set goals for yourself.
My first year of powerlifting was nothing specular. I didn’t set any records, and fell short of making it state. What I learned in my first year was the skill of self-discipline. I didn’t always wanted to go to lifting everyday
but I knew that if I wanted to get any stronger I couldn’t be slacking. It also helped me improve a lot in school do to the fact that I have to keep my grades up to be able to stay on the team. Powerlifting also boosted my confidence up also, not so much my freshman year but by my junior year it started going up. By my senior year I was one of the strongest kids on the team and it felt good knowing that all my hard work and dedication paid off. I finished my high school powerlifting lifting career finishing fifth in the state and sixth in the nation. Going into freshman year I didn’t know a lot of people entering high school so joining powerlifting definitely help make friends. The friends that I made through powerlifting are some of the best friends that I have and I still talk to then even after we graduated and went our separate ways, but still see then in the weight room occasionally. After graduating I was welcomed to come back and be an assistant coach, by the head coach so I still get the chance to meet new people and offer my knowledge to help then improve just like I was fortunate enough to receive my freshman year. Setting goals is important because if you don’t set goals you don’t have anything to work towards, or you don’t notice any of your improvements and how far you have come. There is no better feeling that finally achieving the goal that you set for yourself weeks, or even months ago. Sometime you fall short of your goals, but that’s okay as long as you continue to work and train so you can get it next time. At my last meet I fell short of hitting my goal of a 600lb deadlift by just fifth teen pounds, but I didn’t give up on it and am still training hard and I am going to get it in the next meet that’s coming up in January. I am still powerlifting today and I don’t have any plans of stopping anytime soon. I am grateful to have found a sport that I am so passionate about and dedicated to. If I never joined the team my freshman year than my life would be a lot different than it is, I wouldn’t have the friends I do, the self-discipline or confidence I do, and would have never know the importance of setting a goal for yourself and being able to achieve it.
Having strength and con the first semester of my sophomore year I learned many things about the weight room and all the lifts. Personally the squat lift was my favorite and the easiest for me. It was the easiest one for me because it was simple to set up, and it was the most comfortable with my body strength.
I joined my school’s cross country team in the summer. At the beginning we performed pre-season workouts. The training was tough, but my proud personality and the very thought of what I had to gain kept me motivated and helped me push through the pain. The overhead squat is one of the most active and extreme lifts performed .it takes great consideration in flexibility, mobility and concentration to properly perform the movement in the best manner. The overhead squat is majorly used as a mobility training tool for instance, most patients struggle with mobility and stability problems like tight and over lifted pecs that pull the shoulder and the upper back forward , inflexible hips, knees and ankles . doing the overhead squat helps relieve this issues.
I was introduced to weight lifting at an early age and started lifting weights seriously in the sixth grade. Weightlifting mentally relaxes me and although it sounds crazy, weight lifting calms me and is very therapeutic. Whether my day is happy, stressful or depressing, I find pleasure in the consistency and routine that the weight lifting room provides. When I was around six or seven years of age, I would curiously watch my grandpa bench press at his house. I remember thinking that this sport was very manly and cool looking. My cousin competed in powerlifting and during his visits to my grandpa’s house, I observed him work out with the heavy weights; this almost certainly shaped my interest in the sport. My personal goal is to be as strong as I possibly can be. During my years of weight lifting, I have discovered that this sport is important to personal health, allows positive networking and motivation and also builds my self-confidence.

When most people hear the term ‘bodybuilding’ they think of massive, inhuman looking individuals, mostly males, who spend every waking minute in the gym lifting weights and injecting steroids. But that is not entirely true. Bodybuilding is much more complex than that, especially when it comes to nutrition. Bodybuilding is a lifestyle. There are many different factors that come in to play for professional bodybuilders, as well as the regular person who is looking to put on muscle mass or whatever their fitness goals might be. The reason I am doing fitness and toning is because it is something easy that I have been doing for a class. Everything in the class is pretty easy. Who is in the class? When I first began to exercise, I was primarily trying to add size on to my body. At the time I only weighed about one hundred sixty pounds and I was six foot one inch. I was also eight teen and feeling that my lack of participating in school sporting events, as well as my abuse of alcohol and less than ideal food choices, had stunted my physical potential. With this new found feeling of inadequacy I set off on a journey that would change my life forever.
