Walt Disney once stated, “Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.” Quality child care can offer a lifelong love of learning for children. Positive experiences in a child care center can have a significant impact on a child’s academic future and in all of their domains of development. Every child is special and unique and deserves the best start possible. Research has proven that children who attend high quality child care improves self-development by promoting better behaviors as well as creating better relationships with others. Children in quality day care settings were more successful in developing relationships with peers and adults than children who received lower quality care. Children who felt close to their day care providers are usually more sociable through kindergarten than children who were not close with their day care providers or attended no type of child care. Playing with peers is essential to a child’s development of social skills. Playing can also teach children acceptable ways to resolve problems like taking turns, and ideas to help children have a positive play experience. However, children learn by testing their own social skills, developing their unique way of dealing with social situations and experiencing what is acceptable and unacceptable to their peers. One of the most important things a child care provider can teach children is how to get along with others. Structure can help provide brain development and is vital for young children and their environments. Child care centers should provide a loving, structured environment with stimulating colors, sounds, textures, well designed classroom layout, varying activities and books. Children learn routines and how to have expectations that helps them to look forward to what’s going to happen next. This helps them know what is going to happen next and gives a sense of security and belonging. Once they are settled into the structure and routine of the preschool classroom, it begins to build a solid framework for their future school career which will be much more structured and demanding routine. It also allows children to feel safe, and to develop a sense of real life works. Routines give children a sense of security and help them develop self-discipline. Parents have to realize that providing this type of environment at home is important also. If a child is taught routine and structure, when they older they will learn to be more independent by doing things for themselves. The child knows what to expect each day and when to expect it is important for all children but extremely important for special needs children. There is a problem in Texas impacting children’s futures; many childcare centers and homes are not providing children with quality care. In an article about cost and quality in Texas childcare, child development experts Susan Eitel and Joyce Nuner quote a study stating “that [nationally] only 10% of infants and toddlers are in high quality [childcare] programs” (34). The term ratio describes the number of children one caregiver is watching. This number is one of the major factors in the quality of a childcare program. Organizations such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children know as NAEYC release recommendations regarding ratios and accredit programs based on their compliance. Childcare centers and homes must comply with certain minimum standards enforced by Texas regarding ratios; however, these standards often set the bar lower than recommendations made by these early childhood experts. The current standards in Texas do not ensure that all young children receive quality care; for this reason, the Texas Department of Family Protective Services should strengthen the minimum standards regarding ratios to better regulate the quality of care children receive.

The interventions by the knowledgeable give the child a structure within which to formulate meaning (Smith, Cowie, Blades, p510). Based on this I believe that it is important that our children’s development should begin at day care and pre-school age. So that developmentally they are not left alone and not making the correct developmental connections. Many times we leave our children alone and it sets them up for failure. As teachers and parents we should not fail to build on prior knowledge, as some of our day care centers do, but we should build on the foundations of knowledge at an early time. Not in the 3rd and 4th grade when its too late.
