Pop Rocks Pop Rocks is a type of hard candy that makes a POP is carbon dioxide. Hard candy is made by heating up sugar, corn syrup, water, and flavoring. This mixture forms pure sugar syrup. The ingredients in Pop Rocks are sugar, lactose (milk, sugar), corn syrup, artificial flavor, artificial color (red #40), and is processed with carbon dioxide. Mixing carbon dioxide with this syrup, which creates tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide, makes Pop Rocks. Once they are in your mouth, the bubbles melt and the carbon dioxide is released. This makes a loud POP sound that you can also feel on your tongue (How does Pop Rocks candy work? n.d.).

History of Pop Rocks Pop Rocks were invented in 1956 by William A. Mitchell. William Mitchell was a chemist who worked for the General Foods Company. In his experiments, Mitchell was actually trying to invent instant carbonated soda. The famous candy he had invented was first called “carbonated candy”, but came to be known as Pop Rocks. In their advertisements, Sprite frequently uses the word “lymon”, which combines the two words “lemon” and “lime”, to describe the flavor of the drink. In Australia and New Zealand, Sprite is called “lemonade”, and in Ireland and Canada, there is no difference between 7-Up and Sprite.
