Every person who favors desserts has at some point in their life either enjoyed a round ball of hardened candy on a stick or took pleasure in eating a frozen flavored icicle on a tongue depressor. Of course these two aforementioned delights are none other than the adored lollipops and popsicles consumed by so many around the world every year. These two quick-to-eat treats have been around for quite some time now. To be exact, Frank Epperson invented the popsicle when he was only 11 years young way back in 1905. George Smith invented the (modern-styled at least) lollipop in 1908. Lollipops and popsicles although invented around the same time, were made with very different motivations and reasons. He noticed how kids always had much trouble with handling it because there was nothing to hold onto except the actual piece of candy. Because of this he came up with the idea of mounting the candy onto a tightly wrapped paper stick so the consumer could hold on to that instead. The reason the popsicle was born however, was much different. One very cold night in 1908, Frank Epperson (only 11 at the time) decided to mix together powdered soda and water with a mixing stick. Accidentally forgetting about it, he left it on his porch for the whole night. Before Milton Hershey had a world wide known chocolate business, he had a small, not so well known caramel business. Milton Hershey began his chocolate making business in 1893, when his father and him traveled to Chicago to attend a big job fair (Tarshis 14), but it wasn’t until 1900 when Hershey succeed in making the first milk chocolate candy bar (The Hershey Company). Hershey attended an exhibit hall of new and amazing inventions around the world at the fair in Chicago. As Hershey walked into the exhibit hall, he was struck by a delectable smell (Tarshis 14). “Hershey was already a leading candy maker. He had created the largest caramel factory in the country, but he became convinced that the future of his business would be chocolate. At the fair in Chicago, Hershey Bought chocolate-making equipment. He had it shipped back to his caramel factory in Pennsylvania. Then he hired two chocolate makers. Soon the company was churning out chocolate candies in more than 100 shapes” (Tarshis 15).
Milton S. Hershey was born in a small Pennsylvania town named Derry Township on September 13, 18571. He was the only child of Fannie and Henry Hershey. His mother was a Mennonite2 and moved often, which disrupted his education and could only finish 4th grade3. Hershey became an apprentice of a Lancaster candy maker for four years and started to get into the candy business. Milton opened his first candy store in Philadelphia on 1876 at the age of 184which failed after 6 years and went bankrupt on 1882.5 Milton then tried his luck at opening candy stores at Chicago and New York, both resulting in failure and went bankrupt again on 1886.6 When Milton visited Denver, he discovered how to mix fresh milk with caramel and returned to Lancaster to start a caramel business on 1883. 7his business proved to be a huge success and was named the Lancaster Caramel Company8. The success of this caramel company was the thing that set Milton as a candy maker and provided him with financial stability to start on his next interest, chocolate. Milton purchased his first chocolate-making equipment from a German company called J.M.Lehmamm Company on 1893 that was displayed in the World’s Columbian Expedition9. He started a sub-company called Hershey Chocolate Company under the Lancaster Caramel Company and began to produce chocolates. On 1900, Hershey sold his successful caramel company for $1,000, 0010and in order to set his sights to begin mass-producing chocolate. Hershey needed a place to produce that much chocolate and returned to Derry Township, PA to build his new factory on 1903. The Derry Township was an ideal location for producing chocolate because of its source of water, fresh milk, and workers. The factory, later named The Chocolate Factory was built on 1905 and used latest mass production techniques that produced the first milk chocolate that was made in America 11.

No, he created and sold many other confections; his greatest being caramel. His highest achievement of all was creating the world's largest candy manufacturing company today. Milton S. Hershey learned most of his work from Joe Royer, the owner of an Ice Cream Parlor and Garden. Joe Royer taught Milton for four years until he quit. Milton didn't quit because he didn't like the apprenticeship. No, he quit to start his own confectionary business. Milton S. Hershey gave this world a company that changed the way we see chocolate today.
In the late 1880's in Missouri two men named Chris L. Rutt and Charles G. Underwood created a revolutionary instant pancake flour mix. They created the trademark after visiting a theater and seeing women in blackface, aprons, and red bandanas doing a performance of a song entitled "Old Aunt Jemima." This popular song of the time inspired them to use this very image as their company logo.
Kellogg tried to carry over their sales of Pop-Tarts in the United States to other countries, but found a certain amount of difficulty replicating their success. In the early 1990s, Kellogg tried introducing Pop-Tarts to the United Kingdom and was met with very lackluster sales. Mindfulness and meditation, however, are mentioned in ancient texts such as the Bible and have been around for thousands of years.
Imagine doing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Getting out two slices of bread, spreading peanut butter on both sides, preferably chunky peanut butter, spreading whichever jelly you are in the mood for over it, placing both slices of bread one over the other, and finally taking a bite, feeling the butter melt in your tongue but you can still feel the small pieces of the peanuts, still salty combined with the sweetness of the jelly, captures in perfectly toasted bread. By the way, I am a little hungry if you have not notice. But going back to the imaginary peanut butter and jelly sandwich, as you may have notice throughout time people actually do call it “Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich” also known as PB&J. We do not call it peanut butter sandwich or jelly sandwich, that would certainly take part of the magic away, it can only be called a PB&J; a perfect combination of salty and sweet. Thankfully these perfect combinations created throughout time, have not stayed strictly among sandwiches. We are able to see them all over the world in other cultures, food, music, religions, languages, art, and in other areas.

The Spanish then brought it back to Europe and continued to treat a variety of ailments with it (Allen Par. 7). In the last 40 years people have started to question the health benefits of chocolate, but new research is starting to prove that the Olmecs, Aztecs, Mayans and Spaniards were not too far off. Now, the pods from the tree containing cocoa beans are collected, and the cocoa beans are taken out of the pod (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). The beans are then fermented, dried, roasted, then ground to make cocoa liquor (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). The cocoa liquor is then combined with sugar, vanilla, and cocoa butter to make what is now known as chocolate (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). Controversy over the health benefits and detriments of chocolate is slowly subsiding, but there are many things that a lot of people still do not know about how chocolate can affect ones health.
