Throughout my childhood, one of my favorite songs was “Pour Some Sugar On Me” by Def Leppard. Every time I got into the car, I would ask my father to put on this song. In this paper I am going to give a brief history of the band, describe the type of music they perform, and explain what makes Def Leppard unique. Deaf Leppard was formed in 1977 in the town of Sheffield, England. Shortly after the band was created, they changed the spelling to “Def Leppard.” Def Leppard was a part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. This musical movement that occurred in the late-1970s was an era of new musical style. In this era, the trend of punk rock in Europe ended and hard rock/heavy metal trend began. follows (1977): Joe Elliott (lead vocalist), Rick Savage (bass), Tony Kenning (drums), and Pete Willis (guitar).
The following year Kenning left the band, so they hired Rich Allen as there permanent drummer. Also in 1978, Def Leppard hired a second guitarist Steve Clark. Two years later in 1980, the band released their first album On Through the Night, which brought them slight success. In 1981, their second album High’n’Dry began their rise to fame. The following year, Def Leppard fired Pete Willis for excessive alcohol consumption, and replaced him with guitarist Phil Collen. With these five member, Def Leppard had legendary success. In 1983, they released their third album Pyromania, and in 1987 they released their fourth album Hysteria. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” was one of the seven hit singles that came from the Hysteria album. These two albums were by far their most successful with a combined total of over 30 million copies were sold. In 1992, Steve Clark …show more content…
died from fatal mixture of prescription drugs and alcohol. Later that same year Vivian Campbell was hired to replace Clark, and the structure of the band has remained constant to the present day. Even though the band has been around for thirty-eight years, they continue to create new music, and go on world tours. Def Leppard’s genre can be described as hard rock or heavy metal. The instruments commonly associated with these genres are electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums. In these genres the drums are mainly used to establish the beat of the song. The bass guitar assists in the process of establishing the beat, but can also contribute some guitar riffs. A riff is or sequence of notes or chords. The role of the electric guitar is to create rhythm, and to also play lead solos. The last important element of this genre is the vocals. Generally, the vocals are raspy, involve screaming or wailing, and consists of a high pitch range. Def Leppard combines all these aspects to produce their genre of music. There are many bands that play similar music to Def Leppard, but they have unique qualities that set them apart.
One of these qualities was their ability to withstand the test of time. Throughout the bands history they have went through multiple hardships, and band members. The dynamics of the band changed so many times it is hard to believe that they stayed together, let alone made several chart topping hits. One more unique quality involved their drummer, Rich Allen. In 1984, Allen was involved in a serious car crash in which he lost his left arm. Allen wanted to continue his role as Def Leppard drummer. To achieve this goal, he Simmons Electronic Drum Company to develop a custom drum kit were he could mainly use his feet. The band never gave up on Allen, and just two years later he was fully recovered and able to play flawlessly on his new drum kit. This was another hardship that the band faced, but their love to create music
prevailed. Over the years, listening to Def Leppard has impacted my life. I hope learning some of the band’s history, knowing what type of music they perform, and seeing what makes them unique encourages you to listen to some of their music.
Fall Out Boy is an American rock band formed in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, in 2001. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Pete Wentz, guitarist Joe Trohman, and drummer Andy Hurley. The band originated from Chicago's hard-core punk scene, with which Wentz was heavily involved. The group was formed by Wentz and Trohman as a pop punk side project of their respective hard-core bands, and Stump joined shortly thereafter. The group went through a succession of drummers before landing Hurley and recording their debut album which became a huge success.
America had a successful revolution due to the motley crew, despite the lack of recognition and amenities they received for their contributions. “A Motley Crew in the American Revolution” by Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker highlighted the motley crew for their influence on the American Revolution, and provided information and background generally not given in a standard textbook. The motley crew, comprised of sailors and slaves in a literal sense, and the urban mob in a political sense, paved the way for the American Revolution and the founding documents through rebellions, uprisings, conflicts, protests, and violence. This group of men changed the world in the opposition of forced labor, press-gangs and slavery in particular, through influencing
Later, Garcia, who had been playing guitar since he was 15, went on to be the band’s lead guitarist while Hunter helped write their lyrics. Jerry Garcia had played in many other bluegrass and folk bands, such as Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions. The band officially formed under the name of the Warlocks and consisted of Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Bill Kreutzmann, and Bob Weir. After their debut in July of ’65, they played at Ken Kesey's Acid Tests. This was a public party that took place regularly where all the party-goers would be taking LSD.
Philip Auslander’s book “Performing Glam Rock” talks about a type of music that until this class, I have not heard much about. When I think Glam Rock I think of artists like Prince and Kiss, ...

They have meshed together almost every type of music together to create their extremely unique sounds and attractiveness towards their music. Dave Matthews, lead singer and guitarist from South Africa has put together a band that no one will ever be able to create again. Dave picked four extremely talented and unique sounding men to join his band and together they have created some amazing music. The Police were a three part band composed of Andy Summers the guitarist, Steward Copeland the drummer and Gordon Mathew Sumner the bass guitarist and singer. Before the band was formed Steward Copeland was part of the band Curved Air. In 1976 the band disbanded leaving Copeland without a job, or passion. Copeland yearned to join another band and reunite music with his life; coincidently he and Gordon met up at a local jazz club and appreciated each other enough to start a band. Soon after the two of them released their first song “Fall Out”, the two of them invited a Henry Padovani to join the band, who gladly accepted [why?]. In 1977 the three of them quietly toured with Mike Howlett as a project band for a Gong reunion – who Mike Howlett was formerly a part of. Copeland was almost excluded from this tour due to Mike choosing a different drummer. Luckily that drummer was busy and the band kept together. The four of them came under the name Strontium 90. A little while after that gig Andy Summers proposed to join the band on the condition that Padovani would be kicked out. Both Copeland and Gordon resisted after the idea at first due to the loyalty to Padovani, but after a few more concerts Summers was in and Padovani was informed that he was out of the band due to his limited abilities as a guitarist. Coming to distress in early 1978 the band accepted a shallow deal for money as a band in a gum commercial. The commercials director had only one condition, that they dye their hair blond for the shoot. The band was blessed to get this opportunity as later known because the blond hair became a trade mark of the band. The band’s first album was a hardship for them; they had a small studio and low budget, provided by Copeland’s older ...

The members included Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Larry Van Kriedt, Dave Evans, and Colin Burgess. The people who wanted the most success out of them were Australia’s legendary roadie Ray Arnold and his partner Alan Kissack. The two men convinced “Chequers” entertainment manager Gene Pierson to let the band play at the popular Sydney nightclub in 1973. Colin Burgess was the first member fired, and several bassists and drummers passed through the band the next year. The Young brothers decided that Evans was not a suitable frontman for the group, because they felt he was more of a glam rocker. It was Gene Pierson who arranged for Bon Scott from “Fraternity” to join them as the lead singer. (Paul Sutcliffe, Pg. 34, P.2)

In 1976 Steve Jobs Co-founded the apple Computer Inc. Steve Jobs had an idea that would create a chain of brilliant ideas behind it. What Jobs did was step out of the normal and tested the limits of what could be done. Like Steve Jobs, music is constantly changing and developing new beats and styles. At the beginning of Lady’s Gaga’s career, many people questioned her style and music. Soon after, she was accepted and rose to the top of the charts. You may ask what this has to do with art but it’s very simple. Innovation takes time and patients. Like many music artist and inventers, painter and sculptors take risks with their ideas. According to “Other Criteria” Damien Hirst is one of the most influential artists of his generation. What Damien Hirst has done is very similar to what many inventers and new music artist are doing. That is why I would like to talk to you about the life of Damien, his innovations and art he has created.

Throughout their career, the Beach Boys emerged as the most popular surf band. The band includes the three Wilson brothers, Brian, Carl, and Dennis, and their cousin Mike Love, along with their friend Al Jardine. With Mike as lead vocals, Bria on bass, Dennis on drums, Carl on lead guitar, and Al on rhythm guitar, they were the only band to challenge the Beatles’ success for a small time. Unfortunately, Brian’s drug use and obsession with beating the Beatles eventually led to a nervous breakdown and he was no longer a consistent participant. In the mid 1962’s, The Beach Boys released “Surfin’ Safari,” which hit the top 20 charts and helped popularize the “surf rock craze.” “Surfin’ USA,” which was similarly themed, was released in 1963 and hit the top ten charts. The next year,
