Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
Abstract
The Arm & Hammer Brand Baking Soda has been a staple of American life since 1846. The brand once only used for baking enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the 1970's by reinventing itself and its usefulness without changing a single ingredient. The new marketing campaign would eventually expand the Arm & Hammer brand to include deodorants, laundry detergents, cleaning supplies, and even toothpaste. An interesting history with many interesting uses in such an uninteresting little yellow box we are all familiar with, Arm & Hammer Baking Soda has become as Americana as apple pie and baseball. In fact, you probably can't even name one other brand of baking soda, can you?
The Little Yellow Box
Though we are all familiar with the little yellow box in our refrigerators or in our mothers pantries many of us would be amazed at what can be done with the contents of that little yellow box. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda has been used as a toothpaste, a remedy for bee stings, a fire extinguisher, a pot-scrubber, a facial scrub, a battery acid neutralizer, a laundry additive, a carpet freshener, a way to test the pH in your gardening soil, a litter box freshener, a remedy for fleas, it even removes tea stains from old plastic drinking cups (Thomlison, n.d.). These are just a few of the consumer uses for Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, not to mention the commercial and industrial uses such as an abrasive blast for removal of surface coatings, in water treatment facilities, air pollution control, as an additive in oil well drilling fluids, and even as an alternative to CFC's in the electronics industry (Thomlison, n.d.).
Started in 1846 by Dr. Austin Church in Rochester, New York was the first American factory for the production of saleratus or sodium bicarbonate. Dr. Church felt he had a better and cheaper way to manufacture this popular additive in American rather than to continue importing it from Europe. His brother-in-law, John Dwight, an ambitious gentleman and convincing salesman traveled from grocer to market promoting the American made substance creating a substantial customer base. The company was re-named John Dwight & Company and they called their baking soda product, Cow Brand Baking Soda (Wikipedia, 2005). Soon after Dr. Church retired in 1867, his two sons began their own firm called Church & Co.

Bristol-Myers Squibb is the product of a merger between Bristol-Myers and Squibb Company in 1989. Bristol-Myers was originally Clinton Pharmecuticals, a failing drug manufacturing firm. In 1887 William McLaren Bristol and John Ripley Myers invested five thousand dollars in the company and on December 13, 1887 became president and vice president respectively. In 1898 the name was changed from Clinton Pharmecutical Company to Bristol,Myers Company. In 1899, after Myers's death, the comma was replaced by a hyphen. In 1856 Edward Robinson Squibb founded a pharmecutical company in Brooklyn, New York. In 1895 the company became E.R. Squibb & Sons when Squibb passed most of the responsibility to his sons. The company was then sold to Lowell M. Palmer and Theodore Weiker in 1905. Then in 1989 came the merger of Bristol-Myers and Sqibb creating, what was then, the second largest pharmecutical enterprise in the world.
In the late 1880's in Missouri two men named Chris L. Rutt and Charles G. Underwood created a revolutionary instant pancake flour mix. They created the trademark after visiting a theater and seeing women in blackface, aprons, and red bandanas doing a performance of a song entitled "Old Aunt Jemima." This popular song of the time inspired them to use this very image as their company logo.

Dish soap, along with many other household cleaning agents, has buffering properties. A buffer acts as a pH stabilizer. It is a combination of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base combined with its conjugate acid. If a strong acid ion is added, the buffer simply replaces it with a weak acid ion, therefore causing little change in the pH of the solution. Household cleaning products usually have some form of a buffer, because otherwise, they would burn skin to touch. As expected, the two sodas were originally acidic, while the soap was basic.

Initially, the first jelly bean was created in the early 1800s by an unknown American candy maker. However, one can trace back the beginnings of their production process to 17th century France. The French made Jordan Almonds, sugar glazed almonds, by a process called panning, which is now used to make the hard-sugar coating on jelly beans. Panning is the rocking of a desired item in a container filled with syrup and sugar until it forms a hard candy shell. By the mid-1800s jelly beans had become very popular in the United States. An 1861 advertisement, even recommended sending jelly beans to soldiers fighting in the Civil War. The most popular jelly bean distributer soon became The Herman Goelitz Candy Company (established in 1869), today known as The Jelly Belly Candy Company. Originally, jelly beans were sold by weight and flavor then taken home in paper bags; but beginning in 1976, the Jelly Belly Company created pre-mixed and assorted flavored bags. The eight original mixed flavors were: Root Beer, Very Cherry, Cream Soda, Green Apple, Grape, Lemon, Licorice, and Tangerine.
