Wellness is used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body, and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being. There are six pillars of wellness which include: physical, emotional, social, spiritual/intellectual and occupational. Each one of these pillars covers its particular area related to health, but they all share in your total wellness. There are many benefits to participating in the wellness programs such as increased energy and improved eating habits and assist you to be more engaged and productive at home and work. The quality of life is also becoming more important to many people’s health. Becoming self-aware and exercising self-control are fundamental elements of emotional wellness. It includes the capacity to manage one’s feelings and related behaviors including the realistic assessment of one’s limitations, development of autonomy, and ability to cope effectively with stress. Learning to live with and manage some degree of stress in your life is also central to overall emotional wellbeing. The effects of stress can directly impact work and classroom performance in both faculty and students. On a college campus, there are many students and faculty who do not take care of their health, and who do not realize the influence stress can have on their health. Several stress management workshops will be presented throughout the summer and fall semesters. Faculty and students will learn helpful strategies for managing and reducing stress. I would encourage employees to share their feelings and experiences with others to get other employees, students and family members engaged in the available activities. Awareness of, and accepting a broad range of feelings in yourself and others is essential to wellness. Being able to express your feelings and manage your emotions. Feeling good about who you are is key to emotional wellness because the one thing you can never get away from is yourself. It includes the development of a deep appreciation for the depth and expanse of life and natural forces that exist in the universe. This may not be something that you think much of, yet its impact on your life is unavoidable. Many factors define spirituality: religious faith, beliefs, values, ethics, principles, and morals. The basis of spirituality realizes a sense of importance in your life and coming to know that you have a purpose to accomplish. Meditation encourages a deepening awareness of consciousness and also a deeper understanding of self and others. Yoga means union, and the practice blends mind, body, and soul together.
