Exam 1: Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Drugs and alcohol abuse affects a student physically, mentally, and emotionally, and can lead to academic issues in many ways. One of the ways a student’s physical health is affected is that they often experience irregular eating habits leading to poor nutrition. They also are more fatigued. The use of cannabis in particular can cause very negative effects on an adolescent. Mentally the student can become filled with anxiety and paranoia (Kedzior, 16). The use of cannabis in has also been proven to decrease cognitive function and IQ. The decrease in IQ was not due to academic laziness but rather a physical change in the brain (Meier, 2658).

There are ten components of wellness that interlock to create an overall health for an individual. Each component leads to five main forms of wellness. The ten components are health education, physical education and physical activity, nutrition environment and services, health services, counseling psychological and social services, social and emotional climate, physical environment, employee wellness, family engagement, and community involvement. The five main goals of wellness influenced by these components are for the individual to be healthy, safe, engaged, supportive, and challenged. Understanding how health is important to life and applying these aspects are crucial to academic success. Community is the largest influence on an individual’s wellness. Being involved in a community can strengthen emotional and social needs, and for children, especially for those who may not a have a strong family life. Employee wellness can help those in secondary school who may be employed for the first time. If safety procedures are not put in place and enforced, the adolescent may be seriously harmed or even killed. For this reason, society should know its short and long-term effects on the brain. Marijuana can affect these two areas, emotionally or physically. Also, in some cases physical damage causes the emotional response.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse marijuana causes the user to feel euphoric by acting on the brain’s reward system. The euphoria is caused by the release of dopamine it to the user system. Other effects can include heightened sensory perception (e.g., brighter colors), laughter, altered perception of time, and increased appetite. Marijuana also inhibits the formation of new memories and causes coordination and balance to be degraded. These reactions are caused by binding the receptors in the cerebellum and base ganglia. The effect is similar to the impairments that are normally associated with consuming alcohol. Habitual users can also develop acute psychosis, a fundamental derangement of the mind (as in schizophrenia) characterized by defective or lost contact with reality especially as evidenced by delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech and behavior (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Wellness may be a state of being “well”, however, it incorporates different areas such as nutrition, health, safety, nurturing, and emotional stability. Physical, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, spiritual, and environmental wellness are all considered the six dimensions of wellness with occupational wellness being the possible seventh. But what are these exactly? And how do they apply to me and my health and wellness?
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
But its more recognizable consequence is its effect on the user’s mental makeup. Marijuana can have long lasting negative effects on young adults who use marijuana; it will result in structural and functional deficits of the brain. These alterations can cause development of weakened verbal and communication skills, lowered learning capabilities and a shortened attention span. It can also limit your brain's effectiveness, causing lowered perception and a lack of coordination. Studies have also shown an association between use of the drug and increased rates of anxiety, depression and schizophrenia.
Alcohol and drug abuse is one of biggest problems in United States today. It is not only a personal problem that dramatically affects individuals' lives, but is a major social problem that affects society as whole. "Drug and alcohol abuse", these phrases we hear daily on the radio, television or in discussions of social problem. But what do they mean or what do we think and understand by it? Most of us don't really view drug or alcohol use as a problem, if that includes your grandmother taking two aspirins when she has a headache or your friends having few beers or drinks on Saturday night. What we really mean is that some drugs or alcohol are being used by some people or in some situations constitute problem with which our society must deal. It becomes a real problem when using or I should say abusing drugs cause accidents, antisocial behavior, broken relationships, family instability, crime and violence, poverty, unsafe streets and highways, worker absenteeism and nonproductivity, and the most tragic one death. The situation in which the drug or alcohol uses accurse often makes all the difference. The clearest example is the drinking of alcohol, when individual begins to drink during the job, at school, or in the morning, we have evidence that indicates a potential drinking problem. If a person takes narcotic drug because he just wrecked his knee while his physician prescribed playing football and the drug, most of us would be not concerned. If, on the other hand, he took the same drug on his own just because he likes the way it makes him feel, then we should begin to worry about him developing dependence. Even use of illegal drugs are sometimes acceptable, but it also depends on situation, for example in some countries smoking marijuana is legal just like drinking alcohol in United States. Some subcultures even in United States that accept the use of illegal drugs may distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable situation, some college age groups might accept marijuana smoking at a party on weekends, but not just before going to a calculus class. What is wellness and why is it important in my life? Wellness can be broadly described as the culmination of actively making multiple choices that will lead oneself to a happier and healthier life. Wellness is not merely being in shape or having an IQ of 130. Rather, wellness is an active process through which we can better many aspects of ourselves. In general, most people wish to be the best version of themselves that they can be, leading to the crucial knowledge that wellness is an important topic for everyone.
