Every year there’s always that one day toward the end of the school year that students look forward to and that day is yearbook distribution day. This is the day that the yearbook staff is finally allowed to hand out the yearbooks to everyone that have either previously ordered one or intend on purchasing one that day. Although this is day a lot of students usually look forward too for some it may not be as exciting because they may not be appearing in the yearbook at all other than for the mandatory school photo that everyone takes. Over the years this has become and increasing issue amongst the high school population and there have been debates on to whether or not it is fair that some students are getting more space in the yearbook compared to students that don’t appear in it at all. Taking journalism my freshman year and being a part of the yearbook staff for the following three years I have definitely found that it is nearly impossible to make sure everyone get equal space in the book. In the beginning of the school year my yearbook staff would always spend the first few days and sit down together as a whole and talk about interesting stories we could write about that involved …show more content…
different students throughout school. After doing that we would usually take some time and create a ton of different surveys that we could pass out to find out what kids liked to do, special talents they might have, interesting things they did that summer or even exciting places they have visited in the past or are planning on going to. By doing this it helped the staff a lot to identify students that the staff may not know, especially considering the fact that there were about 25 people on staff and about 2,000 students in the school between 9th through 12th grade. In my experience I found that doing the surveys was the best way to come up with new and interesting stories to cover that haven’t been repeated multiple times in previous books. One story in particular that I remember doing was about a freshman that was only in school part of the time and then ended up being homeschooled due to medical problems and even though he wasn’t able to be in school for a majority of the year I was able to go to his house and interview him about his hobby that he enjoyed doing which was making music and different beats and sounds using different types of sound makers. Not only did he enjoy getting his own story in the yearbook his mom was very happy as well and loved that her son was being included in the book even though he wasn’t able to be at school. Another story I did was about a freshman girl who had a bunch of reptiles including a baby snake. I did an interview with her during school hours about all the reptiles she had and then I went to her house one day to take pictures of her with one of her snakes. This was another one of the stories that I really enjoyed doing because I was able to cover a story on someone who more than likely whom wouldn’t have had any part in the yearbook based on the fact that she was a freshman and wasn’t really involved in any school activities. These two stories I did are just an example of how the staff as a whole try our best to be inclusive of everyone in the school and branch out and really try to find unusual and interesting things going on in the student’s life. Even though I was able to cover two people in feature stories realistically there’s no way to cover everyone in the school the same amount without making the book way to big which would make it even more expensive then it already is. Another way the yearbook staff really tried to make sure a majority of the school population was included was through the use of a list. The list we used on staff was a list that had every student in the school with their first and last name and whether they were a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior. We would print this list off in the beginning of the school year and every time someone on the staff used the person for a feature story, part of a sports team or even just for a quote about their opinion on a certain topic we would be able to check their name off the list and write down the number of the page in the book where their name or photo appeared on a specific page. Having this list really improved overall coverage of a variety of people in the school and it helped between staff members to be able to determine whether they should get a quote from someone else or try to come up with a different story if the person they were going to use was already being covered a lot. Although this list was extremely helpful it didn’t allow for us to be able to have everyone in the book the same amount due to the fact that the school had 2,000 students with some students being more involved in school activities then others. The last major problem with trying to have everyone included in the book equally was simply the fact that some students were more participative and active in the school community then others.
On my staff we often had a lot of students that played multiple sports, were in clubs and were very involved in school activities therefore they were more likely to be covered more simply because they were more involved. Whereas some students who didn’t play sports or weren’t in any clubs or didn’t participate in any school activities it was harder to make sure they were being used multiple times in the book. I personally feel like if students really wanted to appear in the school yearbook they would try to involve themselves more in different activities or events going on in the
school. Being a part of a yearbook staff and trying to make sure everyone was in the book equally was always hard and pretty much impossible to do. It might be possible in a school with only 100 kids or if the staff had more than just 25 kids but realistically there is no way to make sure everyone is in the book the same amount being in a school with about 2,000 kids.
Many parents tend to question if they or their child is ready for early college. They fear their child isn’t mentally or emotionally focused to go off to college by themselves. What they don’t realize is students going to college early bring about better jobs, connections, opportunities, and a better experience.
Sidewalks are different shapes and sizes, people tend to make their own decisions to which way they would want to go. Going through the motions on a sidewalk is similar as going through the motions of life. There are many turns that could get you to your final destination and turns that can also get you into places you would not feel so comfortable being. Staying on the right path and trying to get to where you need to go isn’t so hard but when you have other sidewalks with nice grass and big beautiful street lights that can be a very big distraction to the eye and that could cause problems in your life. Nice sidewalks sometimes don't always tend to continue a nice path so they can be very believing at first but when you make it to the end
While working for the Business Department of WCHS and helping with the yearbook, I have been able to see what pros and cons I have in my work ethic and ability. Throughout the past couple of weeks, I have seen my strengths and weaknesses while being an employee. I have learned how I could work on them, and how I can continue benefitting others with them. There are some areas in my work department which I find easy and fun, however there are others which I find tedious and more difficult. I know that throughout Work Based Learning I will become a better employee and person in general.
School is something we all know and understand. Regardless of whether we wanted it or not, we have all passed through school. School is, first and foremost, a place designed for people to go and learn. It is a place to better yourself, to learn facts, discipline, to learn social and economic skills. But for all that school is intended for, people go for different reasons. Some are hardworking and academically minded, they go to learn, to set a good foundation for their future, with an aim of becoming successful and accomplished in their career. Others are carefree, going for the social side, to be popular, have lots of friends, and in the end just to have a good time. For others it can even be a place of safety, a place where they can get
Throughout the many trials and tribulations of the adolescent years teenagers try to find many different ways to express themselves and discover who they are. There are different forms of expression including music, art, fashion, and, of course, writing. Whether it is through a personal journal used to express private feelings, or through the high school publications such as the school newspaper or yearbook. These forms of expression give teens an outlet for creativity and a sense of accomplishment. They also teach time management skills such as meeting deadlines, and help develop a work-based environment with other. While these publications remain important to students, school authorities continually challenge them.
One of the first thing a freshman hears or thinks about when going to college is the legendary “freshman fifteen.” The freshman fifteen is defined as a fifteen pound average weight gain that happens during a student’s first year in college. This problem has affected many freshmen because it causes them to fear that they are going to gain weight when they go off to college, but the undetected truth of this case is that a lot of freshmen lose or gain under fifteen pounds. To solve this ongoing problem, colleges and universities should incorporate more healthy food items on campus, provide student cooking, and create fitness and wellness housing.
Good morning teachers, faculty, administrators, family, friends, and of course students. It is a great privilege to be standing here today and representing our class on our eighth grade Class Day. Can you believe it? Four years ago, most of us walked into this school as nervous as we were the first day of school. We were the tiny fifth graders, the youngest students in this middle school, not knowing where anything was and how to navigate the school. Now, those same four years later, we’re leaving this school behind to a whole new school being just as nervous as we were when we first arrived. It has been a long four years as well as a short four years. Long because of all the tests, quizzes, finals, and projects, but short because of the lifelong friendships, the lasting memories, and the truly interesting and amazing things we learned in-between. The Abington Heights Middle School is definitely a welcoming, fun, memorable, and great school that I will never forget. These four years spent with these wonderful classmates has been an extraordinary journey with many cherishable memories.
The wise Malcom X once said, “A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything.” The number of high school drop outs is highly increasing due to the diverse obstacles students come cross every day. Many people believe that school is not made for everyone, yet this statement is false. In fact, school is made for everyone since there are numerous programs and institutions around the world to help young adults strive for their dreams. The number of high school drop outs needs to start decreasing since young adults will receive a high paying job if they would receive a degree at a university, will not end up in jail, and be able to start a family with little to no struggles.
Should Schools Start Later? Many high school students, including myself, do not get enough sleep. The idea of sleeping in sounds like the best thing ever, especially after those late night study sessions. Often times, teenagers are not able to sleep late because of school or work schedules. There are many side effects of sleep deprivation, but proven benefits of starting days later.
Albert Einstein once said “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that is it stupid.” Sir Ken Robinson stated that schools are destroying children 's creativity with their curriculum, there are many facts that support this idea. Students are required to think a specific way, prepare the way teachers want them to be prepared. Students also have their own opinion, because they are not afraid to be wrong, and need a way to move forward.
School can be known as a dreadful reality of everyday life for a countless number of people. Students and teachers all over the country are constantly looking forward to the next day off of school. Often times students find every excuse to miss school, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Having to go to school five days in a row with only a two day break is a lot to handle for most people. Many schools are converting from a five-day school week to a four-day school week for many different reasons. Colby Public Schools needs to implement a four day school week because it helps lower the stress levels of students and teachers, improves overall attendance, and saves excess amounts of money.
Being a teenager isn’t easy. You have a lot of things on your mind, a lot of things to worry about, a lot of things to carry and when I mean carry, I mean both physically and mentally. During the 17 years of my life that I have lived so far, I believe that I have never carried this much before. Part of it I think is because it’s senior year. Actually I think that 's the biggest reason why I feel so much pressure on my shoulders. I’m pretty sure that everyone can agree on this, especially if you’ve been through it before. I’m not talking to the adults of course because I know your lives are difficult and what not, but I’m mostly talking to the teens who are currently going through the same stage of life that I’m in right now. Now I’m not saying my life is difficult in any means because I know that I
Tomorrow is my 15-year high school reunion. So much time has passed and so much has changed. I look back on my time in high school with nostalgia and with fondness, remembering it as being the four most memorable and best years of my life, without responsibility and without worries. I look forward to the reunion, as I am excited to catch up with my old friends and see how much they have grown in the past 15 years. I want to reminisce with them and look back on our old memories, and hopefully make plans to reconnect in the future.
Teens today face a lot of pressure. Many students deal with difficult life situations that hinder them from focusing on their futures. This can lead to a loss of interest in school and school events, such as a sports, clubs, or after school programs. Teens start to prioritize other things over their education. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”). The United States, which used to have the highest graduation rates of any country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries (“11”). Students may not realize that by dropping out of high school they are more likely to commit crimes, become parents at a young age, use and abuse alcohol and drugs, and live in poverty (“Drop”). Dropouts make up the majority of those
There is a glorious quote that says: “Treat others the way you want to be treated”. No one would certainly like to be forced around and hear unfamiliar and strange nicknames for themselves in front of their schoolmates because schools are supposed to be places where students feel safe and secured not in danger and fear. Bullying is defined as “intimidating or harassing” another person in order to encroach on him, have some fun, and finally tend to violate him (Lee par.1). In addition to that, bullying can also include grungy words, spreading rumors about someone, or even committing physical violence. School bullying is extremely one of the most superior contention that is taking place in our neoteric time, however it
