Teens today face a lot of pressure. Many students deal with difficult life situations that hinder them from focusing on their futures. This can lead to a loss of interest in school and school events, such as a sports, clubs, or after school programs. Teens start to prioritize other things over their education. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”). The United States, which used to have the highest graduation rates of any country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries (“11”). Students may not realize that by dropping out of high school they are more likely to commit crimes, become parents at a young age, use and abuse alcohol and drugs, and live in poverty (“Drop”). How does dropping out of high school affects students’ lives in the future? Students’ dropping out has become a crisis, President Obama said, “It’s time for all of us to come together parents and students, principals, and teachers, business leaders and elected officials to end America’s dropout crisis” (“ President Obama”). There are 7 thousand students’ that drop out of high school that adds up to about 1.2 million each year, wouldn’t it be nice to drop that number and help kids stay in school instead of dropping out of high school(“ President Obama”). Students’ shouldn’t drop out of high school because they couldn’t go to college, couldn’t hold down a job, and would struggle making minimum wage for the rest of their life.
Many students become more disengaged from school as they progress from elementary to middle to high school. It is estimated that 40 to 60% of urban, suburban and rural high school students become disengaged from school (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton, Dymicki and Durlak, 2008). We all know public school has its issues. There can be rude people or horrible teachers. Each person is forced to learn the exact same and act like one person. No one is an individual and is forced to act as a machine. Sadly these “machines” are humans, and do not work like a perfect robot. It is common knowledge that many students struggle in public school due to the fact they are not taught in a way to fit their needs. They end up declining in their studies and it is as if they are destined to fail. The schools that start classes before 8:00AM, the students are not getting enough sleep at night. In the passage Up For Debate: Should School Start Later It states “Many adolescents suffer from chronic sleep deprivation.” We need the schools to fix this by allowing students to get more sleep by changing the time school starts, to a more reasonable time. Therefore letting the students get the sleep they need to work exceptionally at school. Starting the school day later will also help with the amount of money the school pays for. Starting later would be most beneficial for schools around the world.
As President Obama exclaimed, “When students don’t walk away from their education, more of them walk the stage to get their diploma” (Source 2). If the age requirement is raised to 18, students will believe that only a couple of months is needed to succeed and receive a diploma. Effectively, it increases the adolescent's choice to graduate. Paul Leather proclaims, “What it does is it sets the moral imperative so that students, parents, educators become committed to the idea that the student will infact graduate” (Source 2). The dropout age requirement can not only motivate young adults but the teachers and parents too. The extra motivation from the groups may be enough to push children through high school. Educating the youth in America affects the economy and our future. The National Center on Family Homelessness (2010) reported during the 2005-2006 school year that an estimated 1.16 million children did not graduate from high school. Research shows that dropouts are more likely to be less healthy, die young, become parents at a young age, interact with the criminal justice system, need social assistance, and their children are more likely to become dropouts (Amos, 2008). According to the Alliance for Excellent Education (2011), the number of students that dropped out of Tennessee high schools from the class of 2010 was 28,200 students.
When going to high school, the one thing most teens have trouble understanding is the concept of what the world is like outside and beyond the world of schooling. Some teenagers have jobs but I don’t believe that it will prepare them for the vastness that is the outside world. The fragmentation of the country’s economy is being mended slowly, but to let it heal completely, we need young minds to have stable jobs so they can sustain themselves. In order to sustain themselves, students need proper guidance and preparation provided to them by the people who repeatedly promise and strive for success. Public high schools need to have a required Life Skills class implemented in every state.
Expectations of today’s educational qualifications for high school students are different than it was in the past. It is not uncommon to hear about a student who did not graduate from school. As shown in table 1, 97 students from Stanly County dropped out of school in the 2011- 2012 school year (“Grade 7-13 Dropout Counts and Rates (pdf.62kb)”). Last school year 3.01 percent of North Carolina’s high school students dropped out of school according to the 2011-12 Consolidated Data Report, as a result the total number of students who dropped out of high school in the 2012 year is 13,488. It is also noted that the top five reasons NC students drop out of school are: 1. Attendance, 2. Enrollment in a Community College, 3. Unknown, 4. Moved, School status unknown, 5. Lack of Engagement. (“Dropout prevention and Intervention”) This number is very high considering that there are only five major high schools in the Stanly county district. This is why I think it is important that something should be done to reduce the high school dropout rate in Stanly County.
With high school dropout rates currently at an unknown high and with the inability to keep track of how many there are there is definitely cause for concern and question as to why so many children are starting high school and not graduating. What is the reason? Is it them, the parents or the educational system; who is to blame and what can we do to try and change the decisions of future dropouts? With various changes within the state and school systems, teachers and schools can be up to date with the latest technology. For example the $2 billion estimated revenue California will profit because of the recent passing of propositions 56 and 64 could make a huge impact on the educational system; or offering students incentives for attending school,

High school can be tough for many teenagers. Some students may feel as if the classes they are taking are boring or the material being taught will not help them later on in life. These students begin to not show up for class and then their grades start lowering drastically. Next, these students come up with the idea that dropping out is the easiest and fastest way to escape all the stress that is caused by academics. However, they need to start looking at the bigger picture and asking themselves if quitting school is going to help them reach their personal goals. Most people want to live a life filled with laughter and have the least amount of trouble as possible. Dropping out of high school will not bring joy to anyone, it will only affect the dropout and also our society in a negative way.
Every 26 seconds one of our kids drops out of high school, that's 1.3 million students each year. The main reason for dropping out, the failure to succeed. Society puts an insurmountable amount of pressure on these kids to succeed, however this can actually be extremely detrimental to the students and children.
Schools can give responsibility to students but never without a cost. Students should have to chance to prove their worth to schools and show how responsible they can be as adults. When students go to college classes as high schoolers they sometimes tend to have more free time during those times. If a child has enough responsibility to take those classes they should have enough to leave school and be trusted to come back to school after their free time is over. Although leaving school early is not something that is smiled upon it should be because some students are ahead and can work their schedule to allow extra time because of hard work in early years.
In like manner, if students become apathetic about attending school, they will reap the consequences of a poor education and, in turn, will not attain a degree. Hence, the question arises, why are they [students] not attending school? Though, the explanation may not be a simplistic one, some jump to the bias conclusion that these particular students are delinquents or quite frankly despise school, but, the issue may be more complex that that. In the case of such apathy towards school, bullying could be the culprit. In addition, clothing choices may or may not have something to do with said bullying.
