As students, we’ve grown in a society in which homework is used to reinforce educational concepts outside of the classroom, but would if I told you that homework is holding us back… homework after all is just extra work assigned by teachers to help students grasp concepts. However, how are students expected to participate in after-school commitments or sports or other events if us students are always occupied with homework? In a Stanford study conducted in 2014 by Denise Pope, a senior lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education, students in upper class California communities averaged 3.1 hours of homework each night. If students get out of school at 3 o’clock, then the homework would take them until 6 or maybe even 7. But what if the students have after-school commitments? In fact many people have sports, or other activities that they engage in after school. If not activities, how about spending time with your family? On a regular school day from 8 to 3 and an average of 3 hours of homework does not free up a lot of time to spend with your family. On the emotional spectrum, homework reportedly causes students a lot of stress and anxiety in their lives and depression could set in for some students. Homework is very important in order to help students remember concepts and encourage thinking and creativity to develop the brain. Sometimes homework can be rewarding and makes students feel be confident in themselves in particular subjects. It can teach students about time management and setting priorities. But what happens when the priorities take up their entire time at home, and the student doesn't even have time to see their parents or even siblings for more than a few minutes, or they don’t get some free time in their day...When is the line
79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.

Many people often say that students, teachers, and parents, think homework should be banned, but multiple people disagree. This heated topic has been debated for many years. Some parents and teachers think students have too much. However, some believe their students receive too little. Few schools already have banned homework, but the majority of schools don’t. Some people agree with having ten minutes multiplied by the grade level of the student. As experts continue adding additional facts about homework, it is clear that homework can help students in different ways.
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
There have been so many studies recently that talk about how homework has started to become more burdensome for more students. The United States has gone from teaching to shoving homework in kids’ faces to keep them on the idea that school is always there. Classes have been extended from 45 minutes each day to an hour and a half. This was supposed to allow students work time at the end of classes and get help when needed. Instead, teachers lecture from beginning to end. This gives no time for students to get the help they need when can’t come in any other time. The rationale has changed in America that doing more, always means doing better. This, however, can be the downfall to anything. One of the reasons homework should be banned is because of the unnecessary stress and strain it creates for students. Many students are left pulling their hair out at homework time. Students struggle with homework for different reasons. Some of which are because they do not understand the assigned homework, or they are not being challenged, and quite possibly because they have hit their daily threshold for learning and have no more to give. In today’s world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers give too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. In addition, some are into sports or after school activities, and some have part time jobs they have to work at, which adds additional stress to the already overworked students. Mounds of homework can cause students to be under so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can make students sick with colds, stomach aches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan).
Homework; now that’s a problem. As an individual, involved with the educational system, I stand for no homework. Children and teens across the country and around the world are struggling with sleep deprivation coming from too much assigned homework. This overload of homework, effects family, emotional, and individual performance, even though students across the country are involved with school extracurricular activities, and/or outside clubs, sports, or activities. We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. She contemplates that such a heavy load can result in potential drawbacks to the students. Hours of homework a night plus a full day of school can be just as much work as an adult at a full-time job. She believes students should enjoy their childhood, as short as it already is. MagnetMom complains about how her daughter’s homework takes away her beneficial sleep.
