Argumentative Essay: Should Homework Be Banned?

Many people often say that students, teachers, and parents, think homework should be banned, but multiple people disagree. This heated topic has been debated for many years. Some parents and teachers think students have too much. However, some believe their students receive too little. Few schools already have banned homework, but the majority of schools don’t. Some people agree with having ten minutes multiplied by the grade level of the student. As experts continue adding additional facts about homework, it is clear that homework can help students in different ways.

As children are getting older, they will need to learn life skills, and homework is a great way to teach it. A site named, “Eduflow.wordpress.com”, states, “Homework

helps students have less time watching T.V and playing video games, which promotes good study habits”. (Trevor pilgrim) In fact, this will help prepare younger students learn how to study, as well as what to study when they are older. According to “healthy children.org” “ Homework helps students learn how to be responsible, and organized. ( U.S Department of education) Students can learn how to accomplish the assignment and return it to the teacher. Another life skill homework teaches, is discipline. If students decide not turn in or complete their homework, there will be consequences. According to http://www.macmillanenglish.com, students learn how to work independently. They learn to problem solve on their own, and also learn to be organized.
Homework not only teaches life skills, but it really adds to what students have learned in class. Homework helps students understand the concept of more. According to an article called “ Why homework should be balanced”, “ Homework allows students to think and learn on a deeper level.”( U.S department of education) Spending more than two hours a night doing homework is linked to achieving better grades in English, Maths and, science. According to a major study which has tracked the progress of 3,000 children over the past 15 years. Students seem to transcend in English, math, and science. (Vasagar, Jeevan)
Most importantly, “Homework helps improve test scores”. This was a study done by Kelly Wallace from CNN.com. Kelly stated that homework improves not just regular any day tests, but standardized testing. Another study done by Huffington post shows that students who don’t do their homework did not see an increase in test scores. On the other hand, some people might say that standardized testing really does not benefit them. In my opinion, when testing scores go up, so does their understanding of what the student has learned.
