A article by Annie Murphy Paul called The ´´Trouble With Homework´´ talks about how homework is like a double shift for High School, Middle School, or College School students as their first shift is 7-9 hours in school per day. The trouble with homework is that students have other things to do after school like sports, hobbies, or a job that they have to attend to after school. Some students also want to just relax after school and have a good time with friends or family and homework is affecting them because they always worry about it and can't do things they want to because they have to finish it. One mother said ´´School for [my son] is work´´ as she is referring that when her son comes home he has to work another 1-5 on his homework and
“Unteaching the Five Paragraph Essay” by Marie Foley demonstrates how a five paragraph essay formula disturbs the thought process of the students and limits what they can write. A five paragraph essay is an introduction with the main idea, with three supporting topics showing the relationship to the main idea, and a conclusion summarizing the entire essay. Foley argues that this formula forces students to fill in the blank and meet a certain a word limit. She noted that this formula was intended for teachers in the education system to teach an overcrowded class how to write. While it is beneficial for the first-time students learning how to write. In the long run, this standard destroys any free style writing, new connections between a topic,
The main character in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, is certainly the brilliant and resourceful Francie Nolan, however, three other characters in the novel deserve credit for guiding Francie through her troublesome childhood. Francie Nolan grows up in the slums of Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the early 1900s. Despite Francie’s lifestyle of poverty and distress, she manages to work several respectable jobs, attend college and, fall in love. Although Francie works hard, she would not have been able to survive without the encouragement and support of Johnny Nolan, Sissy Rommely and Katie Nolan.
Sandy Wilson, the author of Daddy’s Apprentice: incest, corruption, and betrayal: a survivor’s story, was the victim of not only sexual abuse but physical and emotional abuse as well, in addition to being a product of incest. Sandy Wilson’s story began when she was about six years old when her birth father returns home from incarceration, and spans into her late teens. Her father returning home from prison was her first time meeting him, as she was wondered what he looked like after hearing that he would be released (Wilson, 2000, p. 8). Not only was her relationship with her father non-existent, her relationship with her birth mother was as well since she was for most of her young life, cared for by her grandmother and grandfather. When she was told that her birth mother coming to visit she says, “…I wish my mother wouldn’t visit. I never know what to call her so I don’t all her anything. Not her name, Kristen. Not mother. Not anything (Wilson, 2000, p. 4).” This quote essentially demonstrated the relationship between Sandy and her mother as one that is nonexistent even though Sandy recognizes Kristen as her birth mother.
Annie Murphy Paul builds her argument by including facts which connect her claims to her evidence. She also included the use of pathos, which allowed her to appeal emotionally with her audience.
Annie Murphy Paul’s “Are College Lectures Unfair?” is a well-written research based argument, but is it solid? In her article she questions “Does the college lecture discriminate? Is it biased against undergraduates who are not white, male and affluent?” She spends the rest of her essay providing evidence that active learning would benefit students who are “female, minorities and low income first generation college students”, while passive learning provides a bases for discrimination against the under- privileged. Unfortunately, while making good points, her essay is unfair. I think she’s the one being biased. Her predisposed claim makes it seem like only the teachers are at fault for teaching their students in a passive way by providing such

79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.

This book Amy Carmichael was so interesting for me to read. I chose to read this book because I found out some very intriguing information about Amy and what drove her to be the loving, and kindhearted woman that the people of India saw. I was also curious to read one of Kathleen White’s books because I had heard that her book were very detailed and fun to read. Amy was so self-less and as I said before loving, Amy was able to take care of her siblings without bickering. Amy was also able to get along with her parents fairly well because of her tranquil and easygoing personality.
As Kelly Wallace mentions in her article “Kids Have Three Times Too Much Homework, Study Finds; What’s the Cost?" that homework is a reason for damaging students; homework causes a lot of stress, effect of physical health such as ulcers, migraines, lack of sleep, and weight loss. The writer thinks too much homework is actually harmful for students. Additionally, a majority of high school students thinks excessive homework is not beneficial to their academic achievement or GPA, and there is some of evidence that it’s harmful to other aspects such as school attitude, grade, self-confidence, social skills, and quality of life. Besides, some of students are not focused and miss the main point of assignments which are given by teachers. Sometimes the assignment instructions are unclear, so students have a hard time understanding the task and therefore it takes longer to finish the work. Particularly for some foreign students whose first language is not English, this situation happens quite often. Thus, all of students would hate to do homework and it is easy to lose the joy in
Ever since you were a little kid in school you’ve always had homework whether it be drawing or writing a five paragraph essay. There have always been contriverces about whether homework is really necessary for students. A poll was conducted earlier this year showed that 58% of parents thought that their child got just the right amount of homework , 19% felt there was too much and 23% thought there was too little. But homework is very beneficial especially because it can help the students in whatever subject they struggle in. Parents may argue that teachers should be assisting students at school rather than making them bring work home, but i would argue that when students bring their homework home they get
Some of these beliefs include that hard work builds character and responsibility. This creates the illusion that homework that is strenuous and time consuming often appears to be more academic than homework that is fun and engaging which is often seen as less meritful. This leads some teachers to assign “busy work” rather than new and exciting homework ideas (“Rethinking Homework”). The problem lies when people judge homework based on these values rather than academic worth. Homework should be an opportunity for students to grow scholastically; However, teachers settle for unengaging work that has minimal impact on a student’s education due to fallacies of larger work loads’ correlation to academic capability. Although homework may benefit some select students, action must be taken against it, including the removal of homework, the restraint of homework, and the monitoring of homework to reduce stress and allow more personal time for
Ring! The bell has rung letting you know school is finally over. You slowly trudge to your locker to get all the homework and textbooks you’ll need. Once again your teachers have piled you with lots of homework that you know will take you hours to do. Every single school day, hundreds of schools across the country assign homework every night. This leads to hours of work after school that many students just don’t want to do. Many parents and schools think homework is helpful. However, this may not be the case. Schools should not assign homework because students need time to relax, and too much homework may cause health problems.
What does ‘homework’ mean to you? Homework is defined as an out of class task assigned to students to be handed in within a time period. But is homework really worth all that stress and anxiety that most students suffer? For example, two teenage girls from Eastern China, committed the act of suicide after failing to complete homework assignments#, this just a perfect example in an extreme case of the immense pressure school children can face. So is homework really worth all that stress? I think not. Homework can have positive effects on students such as, teaching students to be responsible and to have good study habits, and to prepare them for the world of work after school. But is a lot of homework good for students? No. Too much homework can cause students to get stressed, students get stuck and they don’t all have qualified teachers at home to ask for help.
