Annie Murphy Paul builds her argument by including facts which connect her claims to her evidence. She also included the use of pathos, which allowed her to appeal emotionally with her audience.
Annie provides evidence by studies, published in 2006 and 2009, in her second paragraph. The evidence provided by the studies was "that individuals who often read fiction appear to be better able to understand people." By including this in her essay, she is able to support her claim about the importance of "deep reading."
Annie then goes onto persuading her audience by appealing to their emotion. She states that "deep reading" is an "endangered practice, one we ought to take steps to preserve." She also includes that the disappearance of "deep reading"
would imperil the emotional development of newer generations. With her evidence provided of how it can effect intellectually and emotionally the newer generations, makes one agree with her about the importance of "deep reading." By including scientific research in her passage this makes her claim more credible. With her claims being backed up by credible elements, the audience is persuaded to comprehend the importance of "deep reading." By also including emotional evidence, she is able to touch the audience empathy. Her factual evidence supports the logic in her argument, while the pathos up lifts her persuasiveness.
His first few paragraphs relate to the audience with a sense of pathos that continues to reappear as the essay unravels. For example, Carr states, “The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle” (2). This anecdote generates the citation of research when he presents developmental psychologist and author, Mary-anne Wolf. Having written Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain. “We are how we read.”, wolf proves to be a reliable source, as well as an accurate development in Carr’s theory. She notes, “When we read online, we tend to become mere decoders of information.” (8). That statement opens a window for Carr to expand on his original idea in saying, “Our ability to interpret text, to make rich mental connections that form when we read deeply and without distraction, remains largely disengaged.” (8). It’s no secret that Wolf would agree. After just a mere search of her name titles appear such as, The Importance of Deep Reading, Is Online Skimming Hurting Reading comprehension, and How the Internet Is Rewiring Our Brains. If Carr’s theory is in fact correct, it would be fair to assume that most readers would look no further than that for proof. Carr however, omits that Wolf has evolved in her expressions, writing articles such as, Balance Technology and Deep Reading to Create Biliterate Children, Being a Better Online Reader, and Children of the Code. In “The Closing of the American Book,” published in the New York Times Magazine, Andrew Solomon argues about how the decline of literary reading is a crisis in national health, politics, and education. Solomon relates the decline of reading with the rise of electronic media. He believes that watching television and sitting in front of a computer or a video screen instead of reading can cause the human brain to turn off, and lead to loneliness and depression. He also argues that with the decrease of reading rates, there will no longer be weapons against “absolutism” and “terrorism,” leading to the United States political failure in these battles. The last point Solomon makes is that there is no purpose behind America being one of the most literate societies in history if people eradicate this literacy, and so he encourages everyone to help the society by increasing reading rates and making it a “mainstay of community.” Solomon tries to show the importance of reading in brain development and he encourages people to read more by emphasizing the crisis and dangers behind the declination of reading.
Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.

In “The Lonely, Good Company of Books,” by Richard Rodriguez, you learn that Rodriguez had read hundreds of books before he was a teenager, but never truly understood what he was reading. His parents never encouraged him to read and thought the only time you needed to read, was for work. Since his parents never encouraged Rodriguez to read it effected how he perceived books.
Although the greater picture is that reading is fundamental, the two authors have a few different messages that they seek to communicate to their audiences. “The Joy of Reading and Writing” depicts how reading serves as a mechanism to escape the preconceived notions that constrain several groups of people from establishing themselves and achieving success in their lifetimes. “Reading to Write,” on the other hand, offers a valuable advice to aspiring writers. The author suggests that one has to read, read, and read before he or she can become a writer. Moreover, he holds an interesting opinion concerning mediocre writing. He says, “Every book you pick has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (p.221). Although these two essays differ in their contents and messages, the authors use the same rhetorical mode to write their essays. Both are process analyses, meaning that they develop their main argument and provide justification for it step by step. By employing this technique, the two authors create essays that are thoughtful, well supported, and easy to understand. In addition, Alexie and King both add a little personal touch to their writings as they include personal anecdotes. This has the effect of providing support for their arguments. Scott Fitzgerald is regarded as a brilliant work of literature, for it offers a detailed glimpse of the American life in the 1920s and comments on various social problems during that time period. John expresses a strong importance for reading in Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”. In John’s perspective, reading is so important as it is the only gift his mother ever offered him, and it is the only moment they shared together. His mother was never able to show any form of affection towards him nor invest any time to spend with him. The only shared moments they had were when Linda recalled the past and told him anecdotes or taught him how to read. She also gave him the only book she had as a gift; this being the closest form of affection he has ever received from his mother.
Annie Wilkes is a proud mother of two children--a historical-romance novelist, Paul Sheldon, and his extremely popular heroine Misery Chastain. Annie must nurse and educate Paul. Gottschalk elaborates, "Annie views Paul in a madly maternal way. Early in her custody of Paul, she brings him pills for his excruciating pain, but he must suck them off her fingers in a grotesque parody of a nursing child" (125). If she leaves him untended too long, Paul wets his bed, and she must change his sheets and clothes. When he is tired or frustrated, he weeps like a small child. Annie ensures his childlike dependence on her and an ""expression of maternal love" (King 159) with his addiction to pain killing-drugs. Annie's disciplinary actions contribute to her mother figure, also. Gottschalk writes, "When he has been bad, she disciplines him but in motherly fashion often comforts him while doing so" (127). Annie punishes Sheldon's attempts to get free by ampu-tating his foot and thumb with an ax, "exercising editorial authority over his body" (King 264). Annie acts as a virginal and protective mother of the vir-gin Misery, "Annie prevents Paul from letting Misery Chastain die in child-birth. She must live and a novel must be born" (Gottschalk 126). Annie nurtures Misery's return as well, "Nothing will interfere with [Misery's] safety or the birth of the book she is nurturing" (Gottschalk 127). There are no doubts as to the significance of Annie's maternal image in the novel.
Also, even though at times it may seem like Annie is caring towards Paul, in reality she is just making him healthier so he can endure her misery for longer. After Annie finds Paul in his car by himself on the middle of the road, she takes him home and gives him first aid, and Annie does this she seems like she is a kindhearted person but in the end she chops Paul’s foot off, because Paul lied to Annie about how many times he left the room. Clearly, only heartless Annie could chop Paul’s foot off for something as simple as lying. Annie also punches Paul’s already twisted and broken legs because she was emotionally hurt when Paul criticized the paper, this isolated Paul in a situation that was worse than what he started with. Although Annie has many different personality traits that are a part of her murderous nature, her heartlessness is what terrorizes Paul throughout the entirety of his confinement. Annie’s heartlessness terrifies Paul without extent because he knows Annie doesn’t think twice before doing something

The first point is that Tompkins's strong writing ability can be directly linked to her ability to read "strongly" based on the ideas of Bartholomae and Petrosky. The final point noticed, was that without either the introduction to Ways of Reading or Indians, either reading would possibly lose validity. Each work studied in this duo, appears to aid the others' ideas and arguments. The analysis and perspectives utilized in Indians are conveyed through the processes described in the introduction to Ways of Reading. Vice versa, the arguments made toward the makeup of a "strong reader" would not have been feasibly possible to illustrate without examples such as Jane Tompkins essay.
Bailey, Annie suggests to her anxious teacher that she needs to change her phone number and keep the new number private. Annie is very cognizant of the inherent dangers posed to Alicia by the unwanted interest of Mr. Bailey, and she recognizes her commitment to uphold Gospel values. (Schuttloffel, p. 79) This means that Annie will exhibit the values of fortitude and courage as she intervenes in this scenario, guided by the best interests of the teacher, the children, and the school community.
She shows us that there is no hope for the poor without understanding. Parker is successful in getting her point across with her use of connotative language and her ability to create images. She has done a good job. of attacking the reader and getting him or her to listen to what she has to say. Even though she attacks the audience she does it in an appropriate way whereas she does not come across as offensive.
Part of the reason fictional stories are so important is because of how we naturally learn. We are taught in school the three means of persuasion—logos, ethos, and pathos; nonfictional books use two of these devices—ethos and logos. These appeal to our more “left brain” means of understanding by looking to one more knowledgeable in the subject along with logic. In this way, facts are forced down our throats with little hope that we may remember them. Fiction, however, appeals to pathos, to our emotions. It breaks down our walls leaving us more pliable and receptive to the information given. We remember things more easily if we are able to recall a character we have grown attached to, teaching by example rather than facts read off to us by a faceless, monotonous voice.
Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.
