Ledges, park benches, tables and many man made structures that you see in your everyday lives are used by people everyday, but very rarely in the same way that a skateboarder does. All over the world, skateboarders are kicked out of rural areas by law enforcement's and property owners just because of the fact that they are skating. Not destroying property or behaving badly; they are just there for their pure purpose to have a good time and learn new tricks, but there can still be a big amount of people that do not respect property, which doesn't help the problem skateboarders see today while they are blamed for destruction even if it isn't caused by them.. So why do most people deny a skateboarders right to skateboard in a specific area? That is a question asked by …show more content…
This problem has been going on for over a decade, since skateboards were first created and it seems like no one is on their side, and a skater never has a chance to tell their side of the story. Should law enforcement's ban skating in certain areas or should skaters be allowed to skate there anyways? With the world against them all, it is very difficult to make reason against others that their actions is nothing different than people playing a sport.
There's many different skate spots around the world, from the birthplace of skateboarding; Huntington Beach, California, where in the early 1990, the ban of street skating occurred, and Cape May, New Jersey’s recent attempts to cite anyone possessing or carrying a skateboard on city-owned land, the culture of skateboarding has come under fire in numerous cities (Nemeth). In recent years, a famous area for political rallies located in Philadelphia, previously known as John F. Kennedy Plaza, now called Love Park got some serious attention from skateboarders. In the park, there is
Outdoor sprinklers were designed with the purpose of to drench unsuspecting sleepers such as homeless, drug dealers and prostitutes at random times during the night. This design was also copied by local businessmen to keep the homeless away from public space. Another design deterrent used to by the city was to refuse to provide public toilets. The famous Public Space in Philadelphia, Love Park, was recently reconstructed in order to make it more tremendous vista
As skateboarding evolved, it was once something kids do in their free time, later became a prospering sport. This started many new changes to our local cities. “No skateboarding” signs are being posted places that skateboarders would go to practice. Architects are finding new ways to redesign structures like benches and handrails in the city, in order to lower the abundance of skateboarder in an area. All these changes have resulted in a good amount of money spent redoing everything to prevent skateboarding, but nothing is being done to give skateboarders a safe place to skate.
Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would
Skateboarding Is Not A Crime Each year hundreds of thousands of skateboarders get arrested each year for just skateboarding and about 5/6 of them didn’t commit a hurtful crime. Every day, at least one skateboarder gets arrested. Skateboarders don’t just get arrested but also get tickets, and there are a lot more tickets than there are arrests. If skateboarding was looked upon as a sport this many arrests and tickets would not occur. A group of teenagers could go out, get drunk then go rob stores and beat up people for no reason but a group of skateboarders are considered criminals.
A local skater was interviewed and this is what he had to say about the skate comp. “I can’t wait for the skate comp.” He said, “all my mates are keen as. I’ve been skating since grade two. I’m tired of having to travel to Brisbane to compete in skate comps, so it’s awesome to have this comp at my local skate park.
A few winters ago, some friends invited my family and me to go snow skiing at Paoli Peaks, Indiana. I did not know how to snow ski, and I leaped at the thought of trying this new sport. On the first morning we entered the pro shop to rent all the gear and make decisions about whether or not to take lessons or go it alone. We decided to be adventurous and go it alone—no lessons. Kent and Celeste, the friends who invited us, knew how to ski and snowboard. He assured us that he could show us the basics, and we would be on our way down the slopes. All of us, after a few minutes learning how to wedge our skis started down the family trail. Although the family trail had smaller hills and appeared safe, to me it seemed way
When I go to a gymnastics meet and do really good, so I get that 1st place medal or trophy. It feels amazing, I mean the sport gymnastics is competitive and I sure do love competitive sports. The competitiveness gets you that rush of excitement. You feel nervous, but excited to get in there and try your hardest. Kids make better choices and have committed when they have the drawbacks of participating in competitive youth sports.
In “The Birdman Drops In” we meet the growing subculture of skateboard fanatics. The one of the fastest growing segments of the population due to the worship of youth, vitality, and extreme sports. Many people maintain a connection with sport that comes from a history of skating in the early days. What was once just a group of kids skating in dried up pools has now grown into one of the most popular events at the X Games. Skateboarding has influenced new sports such as snowboarding and even changed the way modern surfers surf the waves.
For many individuals, skateboarding is an exciting and fun activity to participate in. Both children and adults have incorporated the sport into their lives recreationally or as a serious lifetime occupation. There are many reasons to why skateboarding can be a positive and rewarding experience for just about anyone. However, there are many individuals that find the sport to be dangerous and argue for its ban with flimsy opinions. The city should not pass a ban against skateboarders on all public property as there is no concrete argument on why their activities are harmful to such an extent; banning the sport would not only result in outrage from the abridgement of civil liberties and be an injustice to the diversity of our country, but force
Skate parks in communities are an asset that reduces the number of skateboarders in inconvenient places. This domino effect reduces the number of complaints to police officers of the nuisance caused by skateboarders. One officer in Maine said, “The skaters are very respectful, and the skate park has cut down on the youth crime, especially vandalism and kids skating on the sidewalks. The park gives the kids something to do (“Cops Love Skateparks”). This officer’s words reflect how 90 percent of 92 officers felt about how skate parks are an asset to the community. Skate parks serve as an asset to the community because skaters do not have to trespass in order to practice their sport, and it keeps youths out of trouble. Another officer in Massachusetts said, “I can honestly say that, based on my 27 years of police work, if you can keep kids busy like the skate park has done, you have completely prevented a future adult offender (“Cops Love Skateparks”).” An asset like this for nearly 10 million skaters is priceless and every town should have one. In a literal sense skate parks get kids off the streets because it gives skaters a place to practice and perfect the sport they
Rowing, originally used as a form of torture for convicted criminals, is now a recreational enjoyment for all. Despite the conditions, those slaves, now known as athletes, are demanded for pressing manpower at all times. In modern day, rowing is a year-round sport where people voluntarily go to endure hell and seem proud of the accomplishment. Seemingly, it should create more problems than any other sport because of how much time it consumes and how much misery it puts athletes through. However, people disregard that the effect it has in the long run actually outshines the predicaments of the present. Crew’s long dark history has turned it into one of the worlds most beloved and competitive Olympic sports and a cherished part of life for millions
Over the course of time. Street racing has been allowed in the main streets or highways with minimal surveillance or any consequences at all. It almost seemed like no one was taking action in what escalated into a huge problem this year of 2017. Luckily there is various ways to help minimize the negative affects it's having in these communities. A solution to what continues to concern many can be treated as a crime. As humans we know what's right from wrong and people tend to avoid situations that can be considered a crime. The seriousness of the consequences is what everyone fears, no one wants to have a bad record, they want to be “clean.”Another way this rebellious act can continue to decrease is by having strict life changing consequences, example if you get caught street racing then you will be charged with a conviction similar to a Dui.
I don’t remember the exact time when I was first introduced to skateboarding, it was probably around 6th or 7th grade. I remember my “skater” phase well (face palm). Anyway, fast forward a few years and I’m off to college. I was at Auburn University. The campus has lots of hills and slopes, very rough on the shoes. One of my friends, who also rode boards, would let me borrow one of his boards to ride around sometimes, and he would try to teach me how to control the board better. One day, he came to the student center where people often hung out to do work and whatnot with a new board he just bought. He got it from Goodwill, practically new, and since he had a lot of other different boards, he let me have that one. I was pretty psyched, I wanted
For some people sports is just a game, to athletes it is their life. According to the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) an athlete can only participate in their own school’s sports or club sports (OHSAA). This means at New Knoxville Local School, my school, my brother or any other athlete won’t be able to play football while attending school at New Knoxville. My intention is to make it possible to go to school at one place, but play sports at another school.
All moderately sized towns should have a skatepark for three main reasons: it will make the town look like a nice place to live, the kids in the town won’t be getting into trouble for skating around town, and it is a lot safer than skating in the streets. In countless cities around the world, well-built skateparks have also been proven to be valuable community assets with tremendous benefits. Instead of viewing skateboarding as a negative problem that needs to be solved, these forward-thinking communities have found ways to embrace these sports while showcasing their artistic and acrobatic spirit(“The Benefits”).
