I don’t remember the exact time when I was first introduced to skateboarding, it was probably around 6th or 7th grade. I remember my “skater” phase well (face palm). Anyway, fast forward a few years and I’m off to college. I was at Auburn University. The campus has lots of hills and slopes, very rough on the shoes. One of my friends, who also rode boards, would let me borrow one of his boards to ride around sometimes, and he would try to teach me how to control the board better. One day, he came to the student center where people often hung out to do work and whatnot with a new board he just bought. One day I was headed to go get some food before I went to study, and since it was in the middle of typical class time I thought it would be alright to take my board without having too much of an issue. I started out and the path to get to campus is down a large hill. I debated whether it would be good for me to ride my board down the hill as I walked across the street to the top of the hill. I figured it wouldn’t be that bad and there wasn’t a lot of people walking, so less chance of casualty. Hmm I started down the hill. I decided to jump out of the way and let my board crash into nearby tree. As you can see I’m already struggling a lot, but never the less, I picked up my board and continue to ride on through the crowd. When I got to the center of campus, the student center, we have this pathway called the concourse where all the clubs, and sororities and fraternities go to set up their tents and what not. Some schools think dodgeball is too violent. Recently principals in Elkton, Maryland banned dodgeball because they think it’s inappropriate and uses slower and non-athletic kids as targets. They did this by removing it from the P.E. curriculum. I think it’s appropriate because it prepares you for real situations that will come later in life, the schools going too far with it, and some kids look forward to it.
After being mesmerized by figure skating at the age of eight, I became a member of the Markham Skating Club. As a competitive figure skater, I must perform various jumps and spins in a choreographed program. I have participated in numerous competitions in Central Ontario and have received multiple medals for my achievements. Yet, my achievement as a figure skater stem from the adversity that I faced throughout my skating journey. This sport has imposed challenges to both my mental and physical strength that have ultimately constructed the qualities of dedication and humility within myself.

I have always been a happy girl, I have a good family good house and a amazing gymnastics career, but two years ago my life changed forever. Ever since I was a little girl I had always known my goal and pushed myself to the highest levels to get it. Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Interestingly enough, snowboarding was invented by Sherman Poppen in North Muskegon, Michigan, back in 1965. Nowadays, snowboarding is considered one of the most popular winter sports among teenagers. On the other hand, there are many people that don’t have the slightest idea how to ride a snowboard straight down a hill. There are four steps to learn the basic skills of snowboarding.
Snowboarding is a new sport that is very challenging and exhilarating and is attracting new fans all around the world. Snowboarding has really changed since it was first invented. It has become one of the fastest growing sports in America and the world.
It is surprising that tap began as a necessity for survival before it was an art form. It began during the slave trade when slave-holders found out that Africans were communicating coded messages through their traditional instruments and drums. The slave-holders had the use of these rhythm instruments banned to try and stop communication (Holmes par. 3).The Africans, desperate to make contact with other slaves, transferred the rhythms to their feet and tap dancing was born (Holmes par. 4).
Skateboarding was the new way and most fun way of transportation in the 1960’s. One of the reasons that I think this is because of the history of skateboarding and what the idea of skateboarding came from. I also think that skateboarding was the most fun way of transportation in the 1960’s because that was when the first major advancement to the skateboard happened. And last but not least is that the ollie was invented in the 1960’s. And by the way did you know that the brilliant idea of skateboarding is actually from the idea of surfing.
As I thought of this article, many of the issues I have faced as a single Hmong woman in her mid-twenties came to mind. Should I discuss the functional reasons why marriage is so important in the Hmong culture, especially for women? Or do I talk about the lack of eligible, older Hmong men? Better yet, should I complain about the attempts by my relatives to find me a good husband as if it were an unfortunate circumstance that I was single instead of a conscious choice? Thinking it over, though, I decided that all those questions boiled down to one fundamental truth – the Hmong community is still trying to learn how to treat the increasing number of Hmong women who, like me, are making the choice to stay single in their mid-twenties.
Lacrosse should it become an official high school sport? As this topic comes in many states in the nation there is a huge controversy in the world of lacrosse. Many states on the east coast have made it an school sport, but that really do us people in the midwest now does it? Just in the last couple of years the NAIA has made lacrosse and official school sport. Which is a huge deal for people like me who would like to play at the next level but don’t have the money to play in the NCAA. There is twenty two states in the United States that has recognized lacrosse as an official school sport. Missouri is not one of those states however. The lack of funding in the high schools in the state of Missouri is what is preventing the sport grow at the pace it should be growing, the amount of teams, and the lack of coaches. Missouri State High School Activities Accusations or also known as MSHSAA should make lacrosse a recognized school sport so that the sport can keep growing at the rate it is.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
As a 29-year-old medical school applicant for which I have spent 23 of them in the world of competitive figure skating. For 19 years I was a competitive figure skater, competing at both the local and national level. Figure skating was my way of life, it guided every decision I made, whether I could go hang out with friends, go on family vacations, or what types of activities I could do so that I would not become injured, hampering my skating career. In the middle of my season in 2009 such injury occurred, I was diagnosed with a bulging disc partially caused by a grade one spondylolisthesis between my lumbar and sacral vertebrae. A few winters ago, some friends invited my family and me to go snow skiing at Paoli Peaks, Indiana. I did not know how to snow ski, and I leaped at the thought of trying this new sport. On the first morning we entered the pro shop to rent all the gear and make decisions about whether or not to take lessons or go it alone. We decided to be adventurous and go it alone—no lessons. Kent and Celeste, the friends who invited us, knew how to ski and snowboard. He assured us that he could show us the basics, and we would be on our way down the slopes.
