The school dress code has become a problem because it teaches young men to look at their fellow female classmates as merely objects. It is also the next leading cause in young girls being raped. This dress code is very strict and could be taken as sexist and can cause discomfort in the school environment. Student believe that this problem is very strict or unfair. “Staten Island High School [is] frustrated with the strict new dress code that’s landing in detention for wearing shorts” (Think Progress). Schools would do better to allow wearing shorts when it’s hot because it is more comfortable than wearing jeans. “After the school reportedly gave detention to 200 kids… teens are gearing up for a protest against the rules” (Think Progress). Detentions are not for this dress code, it is more geared towards bad behavior. The high school “ recently changed the code to prohibit tank tops and shorts” (Think Progress). One student mentioned “it was ‘humiliating to be pulled aside like an object’ to be told that her outfit was inappropriate” (Think Progress). Teachers should not have to authority to humiliate students in front of their peers or much less anyone. “Administration pushed the [dress code] in mass email to [girls] parents and over the loudspeaker during morning announcements made them feel very uncomfortable” (The Nation). Parents don’t agree with this issue and females shouldn't have to put up with it. “The girls realized that they did not appreciate being told, repeatedly, that their bodies were distractions to the school environment” (The Nation).
