My worldview has been shaped and is continuously being shaped by a variety factors. The two greatest of these factors are probably my family and my educational experience. In approaching policy issues, my worldview guides my value system and subsequently, my decision making process. My worldview can be articulated in my approach to the problem of robots and artificial intelligence (AI) potentially disrupting the labor market in the US and my response to a proposed solution to the issue presented in a recent New York Times Editorial.
Description of Worldview
From an epistemological standpoint, I rely heavily on empiricism to determine how I gain knowledge. An easy example of this in my life is what I study in school. I am an Applied Physics

The evidence that I see of this in my own life is the persistent personality traits that I see in myself and in people that I have grown up with. I seem to have the same personality my entire life with the only changes coming with having more information to help me interpret the world, but my basic method for interpreting it has stayed the same. This view is rooted in evolutionary psychology which says that human cognitive function changes through natural selection and random mutation. With that said, I do not think that humans will be able to adapt to and prosper in a workforce populated by robots with AI.
Although I am a moderate on many political issues, I consider myself more libertarian on the social spectrum. For example, I am against gun control, but I am also in favor of increasing women’s reproductive rights. My views in this area are probably a result of western individualism. I have faith in the individual to discern what is right for themselves when it comes to social issues and I am sceptical of government involvement in these areas. I do not think that government involvement is needed in potential social issues related to job loss to robots or

These values can easily be agreed upon and supported. Individualism is a staple in western culture that many feel strongly about. In this case, my position would probably appeal to those with conservative family values who do not want government intervention in their family unit. The weakness of my position is that it could be taken as discriminatory against the predominantly middle and lower class people who would likely be the most affected by the lack of government intervention. It could be said from an authoritarian standpoint that government social programs could boost the earning potential of those in the middle and lower classes and create greater equality in income distribution. While I believe that there is some merit to this outcome, I do not think the benefits of this policy would outweigh the potential negative effects on the rights of the individual. The involvement of government in the daily lives of citizens through social programs such as childcare and eldercare should not be taken
Within this paper, a glimpse into the Yupiaq society will hopefully be accomplished by answering a few questions. First question, what is the Yupiaq worldview? Next, what are the core values that are essential to the success of Yupiaq society? And finally, how are those values expressed in their approach to subsistence behaviors and knowledge of their environment?
Robots are important to humans in the workforce, even though, it may not appear so. In Better than Humans: Why Robots Will- and Must- Take Our Jobs, Kelly initially unsettles the reader by noting that our, “job [will be] taken by machines”- if not already taken (Kelly 300). The reason why
Conservatives, on the contrary believe that public social welfare services should be funded and controlled by the public. They believe in personal responsibility, limited government; in fact the lowest decentralized level of government that is possible. Conservatives deem that decision-making at the level of the individual states is preferable to federal supervision. “Conservatives are less inclined to support widespread entitlement programs which provide for the welfa...
The Liberals value protecting and helping those who cannot for themselves, promotes fairness likes nurturing and strengthening oneself in order to help others. Project this into nation we see how the liberals hold the view that it is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual human rights. In other words Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems while conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individuals to solve problems. Conservatives value self discipline, responsibility and self reliance, upholding of established moral order then use of punishment to establish respect for authority. This serves as the basis of the view that government role should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own
Empiricism by nature is the belief that there is no knowledge without experience. How can one know what something tastes like if they have never tasted it? For example, would someone know that an apple is red if they have never actually have seen one? Someone can tell you an apple is red, but, if you have never seen one, can you really be sure? One must first understand what empiricism is before one can assess its validity. Empiricism can be defined as the view that experience, especially of the senses, is the only source of knowledge (Free Dictionary). The existence of empiricism will be understood through an examination of the attack on innate ideas and the origin of ideas, filling the 'Tabula Rasa'; the objection
Throughout the article, Ford uses data to provide information on the current state of unemployment. He notes that from analysis, it was determined that the U.S. market is highly polarized from existing technology. Because of this polarization, it will be challenging for workers to find new jobs, if AI becomes more widespread and used. Ford concludes that, “it becomes somewhat difficult to imagine just what jobs might be left for even the most capable human works” if AI ever matches or exceeds human intelligence.
Worldview is how you view the world around you and your place in it. Obviously a worldview is shaped and expanded over the course of a lifetime by many different influences. It is important to really examine your worldview and support it using many viewpoints. This paper will be made up of three parts all incorporating my worldview. In the first part I will explain my worldview in detail. In the second part I will be comparing my worldview to another. Finally, in the third part I will use my worldview to support my stance on an ethical dilemma of abortion.
To ultimately understand why empiricism provides a much better understanding of how knowledge is acquired it is important to understand what knowledge, itself, truly is. As defined in the the dictionary it is: the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association. (Merriam-Webster) Knowledge is not simply innate, but instead, acquired. Therefore, empiricism is the only school of thought that provides a sound in model in regards to the conceptual question of epistemology.
Advocates of empiricism share the belief that we can only be sure of something once it has been tested, proven and experience. Take a billiard ball, for instance. You may believe that the billiard ball, when in contact with another ball, will go straight. However, you need to test out that theory as many times as you’d like. If it is proven that the billiard ball moves straight after several trials, then you can confidently say that after conducting a series of experiments to test out the given statement, there is a high
Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, allows a machine to function as if the machine has the capability to think like a human. While we are not expecting any hovering cars anytime soon, artificial intelligence is projected to have a major impact on the labor force and will likely replace about half the workforce in the United States in the decades to come. The research in artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly at an unstoppable rate. So while many people feel threatened by the possibility of a robot taking over their job, computer scientists actually propose that robots would benefit a country’s efficiency of production, allowing individuals to reap the benefits of the robots. For the advantage of all, researchers and analysts have begun to mend the past ideas of human-robot interaction. They have pulled inspiration from literary works of Isaac Asimov whom many saw as the first roboticist ahead of his time, and have also gotten ideas of scholarly research done by expert analysts. These efforts have began to create an idea of a work force where humans and robots work together in harmony, on a daily basis.

Pop culture has explored this idea and gave fictional tales of what can happen if artificial intelligence “goes bad”. While it may not be a credible source, it still has room for interpretation. Allowing robotics what is arguably the most influential trait today, a mind, is a frightening thought. Researching the human mind is still a field of study today and is not fully understood. How can scientists and researchers behind artificial intelligence accurately come up with how the human mind interacts with itself and its surroundings? Yes, they can start with the ability to learn, such as a path of an infant absorbing knowledge through its adolescence, but what if the expansion of information becomes exponential? The artificial intelligence may gain full control and depth of their mind and comprehend the world differently as humans do. This brings the artificial intelligence to a cognitive and spiritual level beyond that of the human mind. If this were to happen humans cannot be able to understand the artificial intelligence. They have programmed it to learn itself, its mind, and how to operate. What level is that beyond a human mind, a god? At one point researchers that developed the artificial intelligence had a grasp and outlook for their technology’s lifespan. What they thought the artificial intelligence may derive from its programming, has transformed into something completely dissimilar. The artificial
When most people think of artificial intelligence they might think of a scene from I, Robot or from 2001: A Space Odyssey. They might think of robots that highly resemble humans start a revolution against humanity and suddenly, because of man’s creation, man is no longer the pinnacle of earth’s hierarchy of creatures. For this reason, it might scare people when I say that we already utilize artificial intelligence in every day society. While it might not be robots fighting to win their freedom to live, or a defense system that decides humanity is the greatest threat to the world, artificial intelligence already plays a big role in how business is conducted today.
Empiricism is the belief that all knowledge and ideas come from the senses and that the only way we can know anything about the world is through those senses. This has a tendency to be true in the fact that people learn from their mistakes. Growing u...
The robot revolution has begun! The eradication of the human race by the cold, cunning, and calculating autonomous army of artificial intelligence is imminent and unstoppable… or is it? While our world is becoming increasingly dependant on new technologies, artificial intelligence is steadily progressing its importance in business, creativity, and labor efficiency. To understand the growing role of artificial intelligence, it is important to understand where it began and where it is headed.
