Moral Politics When people see things as beautiful, other things become ugly. When people see some things as good, other things become bad (Lao Tzu). There exists a division of moral and political models for reasoning about politics which George Lakoff tries to highlight using analytic techniques from cognitive linguistic to establish. The main argument of Lakoff was that the division between the liberals and conservatives is based on how they conceptualize the world which could be termed metaphorical thought for the benefit of this paper. The Liberals value protecting and helping those who cannot for themselves, promotes fairness likes nurturing and strengthening oneself in order to help others. Project this into nation we see how the liberals hold the view that it is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual human rights. The typical philosophical ideals of the liberals seem to focus on the government helping the little guy and leveling the playing field. They oppose tax cuts for the rich, they are distrustful of big-business and those who are wealthy. They like government programs that help minorities and those with lower incomes. They want to raise the minimum wage, provide better national healthcare and provide better unemployment and welfare coverage’s. They nearly always side with unions over management, the guy who sues the big business.
Individualistic in that government is supposed to maintain a stable society but at the same time intervene as little as possible, and has a faith in idividual initiave. For example, Texas has a favorable support for private business and has limited government with restricted powers. Liberals usually have the perspective that the government should help the people much more than they do presently, with more programs such as welfare (etc.). Liberals generally agree that the government should intervene, regulate, and promote the economy and ensure fairness in society always. The responsibility of the children falls on both parents’ shoulders, not just on the mothers. However, this is also an issue in modern society, if mothers rely too much on day-care and do not spend enough time with their children, then the same thing that happens to the father happens to the mother.
The commanding parents see themselves as being their child’s teacher of life. They respect their children but they also set clear limitations. These parents blend love and retribution in their parenting techniques. Although this parenting technique is authoritative, the parents may allow exceptions to their rules for what they see as a good reason. The child of the commanding parents has a clear understanding of what they can get away with between their mother and father. Forgetting to complete a household chore may result in the parents saying, “This is your last warning”. After their last warning, the result would be whatever punishment the parents deem necessary.
