Different types of observation method
Observation in the community
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
By using observation method, a wide variety of behavior can be recorded. Picking through the garbage on the side of the road can reveal behaviors of fast-food customers, or sitting for only one hour in the university canteen can understand the gender differences in choosing (diet) meal, or even watching the customer’s behavior from deciding which yogurt to be taken off its store shelves in the supermarket can also answer the question: Are the customers be attracted by its appearance or flavor or price or brand or nutrition? The aim of this observation assignment is to evaluate and explain the different types of interactions between individual and groups present, as well as the environment in which these interactions take place. The field observation was conducted at the Vietnamese fast-food restaurant named “We love Banhmi” in Budapest, and the role adopted, was that of observer as a non-participant. Group structures as well as overall activity, patterns of behavior, and the duration and timing of such behaviors and interactions were observed and recorded. Sociological concepts pertaining to age, gender, and appearance were also noted and applied.
The reason why “We love Banhmi” was chosen to be an ideal observation place is because of its location: very close to Astoria, thus making it accessible to local members like students, business people as well as travelers and visitors. Thanks to its reputation for traditional sandwich and other tasty Vietnamese street foods along with fast serving process, the restaurant is getting more and more popular, and attracts customers from different cultural backgrounds to come and enjoy Vietnamese cuisine. No alcoholic drinks are sold here. It is also supposed to be a fairly inexpensive pla...

...or fun and play. Within this family structure the children learn the different power relationships between their parents, such that mom may become known as the disciplinary actor, whereas dad may become another playmate.
In addition to physical male dominance, economic superiority was displayed every time the male, whether it is the boyfriend in the intimate couple, or the father in the family, paid the bill, rather than the female.
Throughout the one-hour-and-a-half observation much data was collected and stored for further investigation. Gender roles and power/authority were the two sociological concepts observed and applied to the analysis of this particular study. The four forms of groups examined were intimate couple, friends, single person and families. The field observation was concerned with the comparison between these different groups' interactions.
After a long day in school and studying, every student needs a night off to just relax and enjoy a meal at a restaurant. In this modern time, some aspects of a restaurant can be the deciding choice. Many choose their restaurant of choice based on either those they are with, their personal, cultural appetite, their routine eating habits or their mood. Some of these preferences are similar yet others are the deciding differences. Two common franchise restaurants that pose differences are Applebee’s and Olive Garden. These two restaurants present their differences in environmental and food options causing a choice between them.
For my report, I observed the customers at a Starbucks in downtown St. Petersburg. Each time I visited this establishment, there were consistent factors as well as unique ones during each observation. The morning crowd of people was vastly different than the evening crowd. I did however see many parallels with the morning and lunch time crowd. Each time I visited, There seemed to be an upbeat and fast paced environment.
Growing up, two group of people, parents, and grandparents, took the time and the energy to raise me. Both of them had different approaches when raising me. These approaches were different parenting styles. According to Baumrind, parenting style was the “[capturing] normal variations in parents’ attempts to control and socialize their children” (Darling, 1999). To put it simply, parenting style goal was to lecture, influence, and discipline a child. In general, there are four parenting styles with their own specific benefits and disadvantages. Furthermore, parenting style, granted the dynamic of the family was understood, can be identified in families.
Power structures began to change as this idea of love emerged and male dominance began
Masculinity was made hegemonic, by defining power in terms of force and control. This is because men are naturally created with body physique, which is characterized by a higher controlling force than women are. Therefore, using force and control to define power naturalized male superiority. The male body was used to represent power, which was masculinized as force, physical strength, control, speed, toughness, and d...

In our society in the United states, men are regarded as the dominant sex and are given differential treatment in regards to the division of labor. Though there have been various strides from the Women 's Movement, which have historically garnered women the right to vote, to work in their field of choice and leave the home, but also recently, to join the military.(p. 301) Women continue to seek total equality in our society, yet equality cannot be attained while they are constantly regarded as objects and sex symbols. This all can be traced back to the introduction of the market economy and primal warfare, when men would go out and hunt while the women would stay back as harvesters and nurturers. (p. 302) Theorists like Lionel Tiger and Robin Fox use this separation to explain why men perpetuate patrilineal aspects, since men are out “hunting”, they do not form connections with the children like the mother does, so to make up for this connection lost between generations they form it with other men in the hunting group.(p.
In order to get a greater sense of the food personality attributes, three episodes from each show’s current season were analyzed to examine the personalities’ mannerisms and culinary identity. These attributes and characteristics were coded and analyzed (see Table 2). Content analysis started with cursory examination of the television episodes. I posed two questions during my initial examinations: how do these culinary personalities present themselves as experts in either the domestic or public spheres, and how do these presentations adhere or diverge from the earlier outlined gender culinary stereotypes. This meant looking at the theme of the shows, setting, the appearance and mannerisms of the culinary personalities, and how well these shows convey the tone of the network. While watching, I took note of any personal anecdotes or memories given while the food was being
In order to understand some of the opinions on the topic of gender roles and relationships, it is necessary to understand the definitions of some words as they will be used in this essay. First there are many definitions for the term “gender.” However, in this paper the words sex and gender will be used interchangeably and refer simply to male and female. Also important to note is that while society has more options than a male and female relationship, the emphasis in this essay is only on heterosexual relationships and the way they are perceived in society. By keeping these basic definitions and ideas in mind, one can understand that the word “role” refers to the individual’s place in society and position within a relationship. Along with this, the “traditional roles” would be defined as women being the homemakers while men being the main breadwinners. When labeling traditional roles dealing with dating and rel...
Stephen Mays’ theory on same sex gender roles and gender roles as a whole is extremely useful because it sheds light on the difficult problem of people constantly labeling same sex couples as who’s the “man” and who’s the “woman” in their relationship. Gender roles are less common in heterosexual relationships although people still feel the need to label them. In a same sex relationship, it is much more common for both people to provide and depend on each other equally. Gender roles are commonly assigned based on people’s personality. If someone is more of a dominant character, they are considered to be more masculine and thus labeled as the “man” in the relationship. If someone is more submissive they are considered the feminine one in the relationship also known as the “woman”. Societies norm of assigning gender roles has become so accepted and common that even homosexual couples are labeled with a “man” and “woman” role in the relationship even though it may be frowned
Sociology is the study of society and people. Food and food ways are often elements associated with particular societies and therefore, studying such a topic can offer valuable insight into the ways of that society and the people who live in it. Although eating is a vital part of survival, with whom, how and where we eat are not. Studying such ways can illustrate and represent the identity of a person or group. The nature of people and their beliefs can be indicated when analysing their food habits. Who individuals eat with is a particularly revealing factor into gaining an understanding of their identity, culture and society (Scholliers P 2001). For this reason commensality is a term frequently used in sociological research concerning food and food ways.
Mrs. Smith arrived to her appointment on time, alone, appropriately dressed, and appeared to be her stated age of 54. Samantha is a 1st grader that is actively engaged and participates in class activities. Prior to receiving handouts on pattern, the instructor read a short story on pattern while the students predicted the next sequence of the pattern. Following the reading, the students were given handouts to create patterns. At the same time, individual students were invited to come to the SMART board and create patterns using different colored geometric shapes.
The commanding parents see themselves as being their child’s teacher of life. They respect their children but they also set clear limitations. These parents blend love and retribution in their parenting techniques. Although this parenting technique is authoritative, the parents may allow exceptions to their rules for what they see as a good reason. The child of the commanding parents has a clear understanding of what they can get away with between their mother and father. Forgetting to complete a household chore may result in the parents saying, “This is your last warning”. After their last warning, the result would be whatever punishment the parents deem necessary. The child knows he or she is loved, but also understands that he or she will be disciplined as the parents see fit. Such as, bringing home a failing grade could result in extra homework created by the parent, and the child must complete the extra homework until the grade is broug...
Males and females with families, especially in metropolitan areas need to combine their meanings and in some cases reverse the norm by changing the traditional ideas in marriage and the work force. Because prices and upkeep for almost everything, from the basic necessities to children and housing, are increasing, dual incomes and the help of both individuals are not only necessary, but also vital. It is true masculinity and femininity have different literal definitions, but the meaning of males and females is slowly
