In the mind boggling world of parenting, we discover a variety of parenting techniques. Realizing these techniques usually involves a lunch date with the neighbor and her child, or a lavish birthday party that we were invited to. In these events, we find the parent who is their child’s boss, the parent who has the colossal “Kids will be kids” mentality, and then the one who feels the need to offer an unrestrained amount of discipline. When we become parents for the first time in our lives, we are truly unaware of how much patience and understanding is involved with being an effective parent. As we raise our children, we learn their behavior and they also learn ours. As new parents, we fail to realize that this domino effect soon becomes a mutual agreement between the parent and the child. The …show more content…
The parents who practice this technique express the, “kids will be kids” mentality. These permissive parents make an exaggerated attempt to be their child’s best friend. They love their child but they are afraid to create a balance between their love for their child and discipline. These parents are afraid of somehow offending their child, so they consistently find an excuse to say, “Kids will be kids”. Subsequently, the child becomes confused between the friend and the parent, leaving the parents with no authority. This child does not clearly understand what behavior is acceptable and what behavior is not. If the child were to kick the family cat out of rage, the parent would then say, ‘it is okay to express your feelings”. Children of this type of parent, also feel they need to have everything they want. If the child wants it, the child gets it and if the child wants it now, the child gets it now. A parent’s parenting styles are as diverse as the world we live in today. Nowadays, parents only want what is best for their children and their parenting styles plays a crucial role in the development of children which will in the long run, not only effect the child’s childhood years, but later prolong into their adult life as well.
Fortunately, children do not need “perfect” parents. They do need mothers and fathers who will think on their feet and who will be thoughtful about what they have done. Growing up, two group of people, parents, and grandparents, took the time and the energy to raise me. Both of them had different approaches when raising me. These approaches were different parenting styles. According to Baumrind, parenting style was the “[capturing] normal variations in parents’ attempts to control and socialize their children” (Darling, 1999). To put it simply, parenting style goal was to lecture, influence, and discipline a child. In general, there are four parenting styles with their own specific benefits and disadvantages. Furthermore, parenting style, granted the dynamic of the family was understood, can be identified in families.
Children enter the world as part of preexisting systems. They enter parental systems and families that already have rules, roles and boundaries, and more are made as children grow and the family develops. These transitions can be confusing and challenging for all members involved leading to feelings of fear, anger and even helplessness. Members within the family strive to feel competent and grasp at a sense of security as their family structure and organization shifts with each new addition or change. Normal family development is a delicate balance between change and stability. The most important rules to help maintain a sense of stability and security within the family, according to Virginia Satir, are the ones that govern communication (Bitter, 2009, p. 125). Rules via communication can be verbal or nonverbal but are usually intended to provide children safety as they advance outside the home. As children we have our role to play and parents have theirs. Whether we do it with good spirits or of bad. Using the authoritarian style, permissive style or democratic style in the end the child being guided will grow up with the ideals and morals that he or she was given. At the end of the day if the child was given no freedom, all freedom or some freedom the end results will tell one if that really mattered or not. With that, we ourselves need to be positive human beings so the generations to come can look upon us as examples.
First, authoritarian parents are the ones with the most rules, they establish them and the child is expected to follow them without exceptions. This cause the child to view things only the way the parents say and having very little room for involvement in problem-solving tasks.

During Diana Baumrind’s research as a developmental psychologist, she concluded that parents fall under three different styles of parenting: Authoritarian, Permissive, and Authoritative. Baumrind’s styles were based on how one disciplines and nurtures their child (Cherry, n.d., p. 1). Authoritarian parents make discipline the highest priority when raising their children. They do not see any grey area about discipline (Belsky, 2013, p. 205). Rules, and enforcement of rules, are never left up to discussion. Whatever the parent says must go and the child is expected to fully comply. The standards they have set must be lived up to without any exceptions (Cherry, n.d., p. 1). Because the parents are not focused on the child’s emotional needs the parents are often viewed as not very warm and loving (Belsky, 2013, p.205). Permissive parenting is the antithesis of Authoritarian parents. Belsky (2013) stated that permissive parents do not lay down strict rules or discipline. There are not high expectations of how a child should behave or perform. The parents focus is not on rules or reprimanding, but on the child’s own wants and happiness. The parents’ main focus is on nurturing the child’s emotional needs (p.205). In the Authoritative parenting style there are definitely rules and ideas of how the child should behave, but the parents take a more diplomatic approach to parenting. Nothing is ever set in stone and parents negotiate freely with their children about the rules and repercussions. The authoritarian style of parenting is control focused and militaristic in approach. This parent has high expectations and demands strict obedience. They often rule by fear and punishment. What the parent says goes. It is a rigid approach to raising children that may have been most effective in times of great famine or toil.
