We all have things that we excel in and things that we aren’t the best at. Personally, my strengths are centered around organization, planning, and time management. Although these are all things that I can incorporate into my school work and home life, I do feel that I am not capitalizing on my strengths at work.
While I am in school I am working two part-time jobs, one at an elementary school and one at a local business. At the elementary school I am able to utilize my strengths because they are so vital when working with children, but that is not the case with my other job. The local business that I work at specializes in everything involved with t-shirt printing, which can be messy and unorganized. Even though I think bringing more
organization into the business would make things more cohesive, it ultimately isn't my decision. Latasha, it is wonderful that you work in a place that utilizes your strengths! Problem solving, strategic thinking, and creativity are all things that can really help to strengthen a workplace. When you feel like your strengths are not being utilized, it can affect how much effort you put into your work. Not being able to tap into the potential that you have can be defeating and sometimes it is necessary to move on to a job that is a better fit. It can be tough to decide whether or not you are being utilized as an employee. Although you may want to try use your talents to better your workplace, there are times when your strengths and talents are shoved to the side. From my personal experience, I know how frustrating it can be when you don't think your full potential is being used. Just like you said, it is all about balance and finding a happy medium.
After reading Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath, I learned that there are thirty four different themes that one could have as strengths. Each strength has its own positive that allow people to better work with the people who have this style of strengths. Another key topic that I learned is that everyone has their own types of personal strengths. The main principle that was taken away from reading this book was that the old phrase of “You can be anything you want to be” is not a true statement (p. 6). We are all taught this idea at a very young age and it tends to stick with us for the rest of our lives. Forced by the past, most people are required to try to fix their weaknesses, but not improve on our strengths. We cannot truly be anything we want to be because we are not built this way. We are programmed to tend to stick with things that we are good at and when thrown at a task similar to the one we are good at we do not just excel at the other task. By sticking to increasing our strengths that we already have instead of fixing our weaknesses, we will be able to become a better human being because we are better the things in which we are good at.
I believe that everyone has their own strength and weaknesses, but not everyone is able to figure out their strengths and weaknesses correctly. Knowing our own strengths and weaknesses is essential because it can help to achieve success in anything we choose to do. Another strength that I have is being an active listener. I listened to my clients and utilized a lot of micro skills. Insuring confidentiality was also a strength that I developed closer to the end of field placement. I am the first one in my family to go to college, I have been living my life showing respect to others with one basic principle to “always do my best no matter what it takes to be fair, honest and be responsive to everyone’s needs”. I learned through my career to be dependable, self-confident, humble, and honest and show respect and a positive attitude at all time. People that I interact with always told me that I have the ability to inspire others and the makeup of a leader. Being humble, caring, and compassionate are among my personal values. I know that my greatest strengths rely in the way I treat my patients, showing empathy, sympathy, patience and professionalism. I learned that developing a trustworthy patient/nurses relationship is very important in the management of patients care. I personally believe that a nurse needs to have high integrity and to continue to strive to stay up-to-date and knowledgeable to be able to provide utmost quality care to the patients.
One of my strength is working under pressure. It is a very positive thing to have because the ability to respond effectively and deal with unexpected and unscheduled things is needed in a well- organized office. Working under pressure involves controlling emotions during conflict. A more objective of a disruption (or crisis) means to think about the situation and rationally identify some potential solutions, then having a clear plan and follow-through of manageable tasks. The other strength is self-motivation, which is the capacity to motivate yourself to do something without anyone telling you what you should do, why, where and when. The last my strength is to be well organized in managing competing tasks. I am a very disciplined person in accomplishing my goals.
My flexibility is certainly one of my greatest strengths. I can easily move between different working styles, depending on the scenario. I have no problem trying a new idea or concept out before deciding on a final direction. I am continually exploring different options. Being a “people-person” is one of my other strengths. My excellent interpersonal skills allow for me to bring ideas, thoughts and people together. I generate enthusiasm and excitement into tasks. I feel comfortable and confident talking to others about anything that I have knowledge of.
Being in grade 12 and having even more commitments has been at times difficult, however volunteering provides me a relief from the stress that I have from school. I started to work at the start of the school year and commit myself to work everyday for 6 hours from 6-12am and even longer on the weekends in order to be able to pay for university and for the things that are valuable to me. The problem with working so much is that I have to hone my time management skills, as I do not want to do bad in school, as that would contradict the whole purpose of me having a job, which is to pay for university. Although at times I have wanted to just quit, I have motivated myself constantly to keep working and volunteering, as I am not only making a difference in my own life, but also in the life of others, therefore I believe that I will always be able to make time to help those that are in need of
Working at Woodcreek Athletic Club is the best job I ever had. The hours and pay were great. I had the best boss anyone could have, and I learned an astounding amount.
Today’s generation sees a decline in its willingness to work and its respect for employers. Today’s young generation is more concerned about themselves, and have little respect for authority. There is a lack of passion and effort seen by all employers. The generation thinks minimum wage means minimum effort when it truly means minimum experience. Personally I viewed my first job as a great opportunity for me. I first applied there wanting to work and wanting to earn money. I was extremely motivated and respectful towards my employers. This is all still obvious in me as I run my own shifts as a manager at Culver’s. With effort and respect these employees could quickly climb up the ladder in their workplace as I did.
Personal Strengths and Weakness My real strength is my compassion and empathy. I pride myself in my abilities to provide help and guidance to others. Moreover, I pride myself in my ability to listen to others and summarize their concern. To better understand group members modeling the basic skills of listening and respect will allow other members to provide the support that is needed for achieving the group goals.
On my first day as an intern for Colder Products Company (CPC), I did not know what to expect. The prospect of doing real and influential work was both exciting in the fact that it would apply to what I enjoy doing, but daunting when I realized that my work now counted for something more than a grade. Now, a little under three months in, I’ve learned some simple, yet important lessons along the way which will help you succeed on the job, and get the most out of the work you’ll be doing.
One of my greatest strengths at work that I have recognized would have to be my ability to be a well-organized individual. I tend to write what I have to do down on paper and prioritize what is more important to least important. In doing this, it helps me organize and accomplish my work and meet deadlines that are important. A personal strength that I have at home is patience.
