Personal Strengths and Weakness My real strength is my compassion and empathy. I pride myself in my abilities to provide help and guidance to others. Moreover, I pride myself in my ability to listen to others and summarize their concern. For example, in a heated discussion between two group members personally, I feel the responsibility of intervening. As an outcome, this doesn’t allow group members to settle their own conflict and disrupts the storming stage of the group process. Another difficulty that I experience is calling out-group members when they are doing things that disrupt the group. Furthermore, I find it difficult because I am afraid of sounding rude to that member particular group member. Moreover, not addressing the issues might cause other group members to be upset. As an outcome, by not addressing these issues it might cause the group disruption and to deviate from their goals. Some group members might challenge the leader more often, and it may cause group conflict. These weakness are troubling and critical to group therapy. However, I believe I have the ability to overcome these weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses were mainly discovered through the papers that we have written. I have many strengths when I’m writing papers and at the same time, I have many weaknesses. In my papers, I have noticed that one of my biggest strengths is how articulate I am. The papers that have been written by myself show that I structured sentences to present ideas in different ways. It is not straightforward and boring when ideas are presented. I like to keep the reader hooked on my paper. In order to keep up with this strength, I like to read articles. To reduce any unnecessary risks, I will understand each member’s limits, respect their requests, be invitational and not dictatorial, describe their behavior and not be judgmental, and avoid harsh verbal confrontations. These risks will also be discussed during the initial session of the group. I will counteract psychological risks by using various techniques such as blocking, caring confrontation, questioning, and assessing. I have taken precautionary measures as well by contacting my mentors and consultants and alerting them about the risks of the group I am running. If there is an ethical or legal concern, it will be documented and taken to a clinical supervisor. In addition, I have liability protection and malpractice insurance in place.
Throughout the course of a Master’s counseling program, moments of doubt, and a lack of working knowledge are bound to play a major role in the confidence a future counselor will posses in effectively implementing interventions early on in the instructional phase of his or her career. Corey (2010) states that an effective group leader, is able to become aware of their own vulnerabilities, and take responsibility in their responses. To become aware of a possible vulnerable area, a counselor must first take a concise look into their personal strengths and weakness, and then decide to actively seek out assistance with working on vulnerabilities. In exploring the roles of an effective group leader, I have realized that within the group process, I most fear the roles of a group leader that pertain to direct confrontation of a client, I also fear that the improper implementation of a intervention could lead to potential harm of the client. Attending to these fears I hold regarding group member confrontation, and intervention implementation is the key to gaining further understanding into how I can become comfortable with these essential functions of a group leader. The current paper will take a closer look into my vulnerabilities, using current research to gain insight into how I can overcome fears, when facilitating a task, psycho-educational, counseling, and psychotherapy group.
I gave this paper a lot of thought before I began to write. ?What qualities and traits do I posses that make me desirable as an employee, a teammate, and as a person?? First, you must be able to identify your own personal strengths and weaknesses in order to become a lifelong learner and an essential part of a ?team?. As technology is constantly growing you have to be willing to accept what makes you an asset or a liability in any given situation you may encounter in your life. The qualities and traits that I feel make me a valuable entity to my employers, co-workers, classmates and within my personal relationships are varied. I will go on to describe some of the attributes I think are most important in establishing and maintaining successful relationships whether personal or work related.
Group therapy has become a popular form of therapy lately; it used to be used more as a last option, but now group therapy is often the first or better choice for some clients. Group therapy can be helpful in an assortment of ways. Group counseling has provided constructive results, Corey, Corey, & Callanan (2011) explain some factors that have helped “such as skilled leaders, appropriately referred group members, and defined goals” (p.480). There are many different types of group therapy. I think practitioners should know not only how to effectively handle group therapy if they are doing group work, but if group therapy is the right choice for everyone involved.
Through the process of this class I have been able to reflect and analyze how I am as a leader as well as a co-leader in a group setting. I believe throughout this process of being part of a group as a member and leader has help me further define the roles that I will play in group counseling in the future. The evolution that I am seeing are an abundance of growth in areas that I thought I was already comfortable in such as being an active listener and co-leading. I see that there are more to becoming a powerful leader and facilitator. Five characteristics of the initial stage of groups are: acquaintance, risks, building trust, learning about group functioning, and group members finding their place. During the initial stage of groups development group members are getting to know one another. During acquaintance, I would be open with their comments. According to Corey, Corey and Corey (2010), “typically, members bring to the group certain expectations, concerns, and anxieties, and it is vital that they be allowed to express them openly” (p. 107). I have listen to the fears that group members have and encourage them to express them. The group leader needs to learn to deal with the patients fears, thus “the ability of a therapist to instill confidence and trust within the therapeutic frame is essential to therapeutic success” (Ackerman, & Hilsenroth, 2003). I would invite the members to talk about how they are feeling with the group. Inviting discussion is an important role of the group leader, since there would be “moments of silence and awkwardness” (Corey, et. al., 2010, p. 133). Clients also learn

I felt that my efforts alone were not the deciding factor of this group as other members in my group had stronger expertise in other areas where I was weaker. An example of this would be how one member assembled all the power point slides that were passed in by each member into one power point project for our health mentor, which showed me how diverse our group was; additionally, this gave me a small insight in how a healthcare team model might work with each member contributing towards one goal using certain acquired expertise. I feel my biggest flaw letting go of control, because I would make numerous suggestions but not always acknowledge my group’s input, or I would simply suggest more than was required, although now I understand that helping too much can be damaging in a team
For this to occur however, requires an understanding of culture and society, as well as governance and process. Concepts In the first chapter, the therapeutic factors that stood out to me the most was instillation of hope. There is research that says most therapies operate through hope and conviction. Group therapists do all that they can to increase the patient’s belief and confidence in group therapy that works effectively. Also, it is important that therapists believe in themselves. The most important is that members learn from others who have similar problems how therapy can work for them in their life.
