In today’s working environment successful leaders must have the ability to step forward and break out of their shells in order to be successful. Since studying organizational development I have become more cognizant of this fact. Through the study of organizational development, I have seen skills, that are strengths for me, and some I can improve. The following sections will identify the areas of strength I have been successful with and the areas that I see can be improved.
My OD Competency Areas of Strength Two areas of strength I have identified are self-awareness/self-management, from the Interpersonal Skills and Personal Characteristics category, and public speaking in the General Personal Skills category. In the past I would not have considered these as strengths, but over time they have become an integral asset as I have progressed in my personal life and career. I have been able to utilize them to my advantage in order to receive effective

I never would have dreamed of public speaking being a part of my repertoire. Not only do I see public speaking a general professional skill, it should be listed under interpersonal skills and personal characteristics.
Through my educational and work experiences I have had plenty of practice with public speaking. It it is an integral part of my life. It is a pivotal success factor in organizational development processes due to the importance of communication. I communicate on a daily basis with many people in my organization and with others externally. These people are lawyers, information system technicians and vendors. I must be able to get my point across in a precise method.
Inconsistent dialogue would lead to confusion and others would not understand my point if I failed to communicate effectively. This could lead to delays or failure on projects that are required to be completed in a timely
The speech delivered by Dr. Randy Pausch is a powerful and influential public speaking, including various communication components that we should pay attention to and learn when we present our speeches. This lecture is divided into three parts: My childhood dreams, enabling the dreams of others and lessons learned. Dr. Randy Pausch told his audience what he believed and valued with his proper body languages, effective and efficient delivery and interesting and attractive visual aids. From this speech, it can be told that the speaker’s strengths and effectiveness from the lecture, which can reflect my problems as a communicator and a public speaker
My top strength is Individualization. To me, this strength means the ability to figure people out and understand the true uniqueness of others. With this strength, I am able to make things run smoothly and, at the same time, able to involve everyone in a group. The next strength I have is strategic, which enables me to find alternative ways to deal with problems. Therefore, I am also able to make things run smoothly and according to plan. In addition to these two strengths, my third strength is competitive which measures how successful I am compared against others. This is great because it helps me to endure and work hard in order to make it to the top. My fourth strength is restorative which is a talent that helps me to deal with any problems that may arise and ensure that things continue going according to plan. This strength means that I can endure and overcome any adversity that comes my way. My last strength is achiever. This is a strength that helps me to work hard and always be productive. Being an achiever maintains my ability to always keep going and to constantly feel the need to be productive.
Although I have been able to improve and grow in my critical thinking throughout the semester, I still need to practice throughout the rest of my time at Dominican University. I hope to improve my critical thinking skills, specifically in my future English 102 class, as well as in any other classes where I am required to write essays. When looking at the leadership aspect of being a Dominican Educator, I need to improve my public speaking skills. Even though I accept the responsibilities of being a future educator, I must progress in my confidence. Through increasing my confidence, it will allow public speaking to become less challenging. The way I hope to improve my public speaking skills is by taking workshops on leadership and public speaking. Also, I will attempt to take opportunities that allow me to public speak because the further I practice, the less nervous I will become as time goes on. Lastly, when considering the aspect of a person of service, I hope to progress my professional behavior. When having to teach the micro-teaching lesson, I used unprofessional language when referring to the class. Instead of referring to the class as “class” or “students”, I said “you guys”. Despite the fact I was not purposely attempting to use informal language, if I were in a real classroom, it would not have been acceptable. Because I use informal language so
Knowing what I can do well is just important as knowing what needs improvement. My strongest attributes are being able to perform under pressure and multitasking. This is necessary to sell products and perform services that benefit the customer. The value of getting the job done correctly and on time correlates to returning customers and repeat business. My competitive advantage over others in the same industry is the high level of service we offer. I don’t just push a product on a client. I listen to what they want and need, make suggestions for the best available solutions; and I also help them with cost savings and environmentally friendly alternatives. One weakness I have and need to work on is public speaking. As I grow in my career and move into managerial leader positions, I will have a lot more opportunities to give speeches. I plan to work on my public speaking skills by practicing and making incremental changes to constantly improve. It’s not a matter of being shy in front of a group. It’s more of a point to be well prepared for the occasion and motivated to do a good job. To stay prepared for opportunities and change, I plan on continuing my education in the business field, and learning as much as possible about my job. I will also need to stay up-to-date with current issues in my external and internal
Another strength that I have is being an active listener. I listened to my clients and utilized a lot of micro skills. Insuring confidentiality was also a strength that I developed closer to the end of field placement. Conducting assessments and making sure I tracked and exhausted the topics was also a strength that I identified throughout field. Practicing from a strengths perspective was also another area I excelled at when working with my clients. A skill that I could work on is being more conscious of self in terms of body language during interviews, because at times I find myself with my arms cross which may give an indication that I’m closed off or
Leaders are considered as an important part to any successful organization because the leader is not just being a successful leader but also to bring achievement to the organization and its employees. “Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals.” (Robins, page 221). Leaders insist employees on entering training courses to improve the productivity, and to expand their knowledge.
I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Thus, I am proud to say that I have fullfilled the course objectives and enhanced my public speaking
My flexibility is certainly one of my greatest strengths. I can easily move between different working styles, depending on the scenario. I have no problem trying a new idea or concept out before deciding on a final direction. I am continually exploring different options. Being a “people-person” is one of my other strengths. My excellent interpersonal skills allow for me to bring ideas, thoughts and people together. I generate enthusiasm and excitement into tasks. I feel comfortable and confident talking to others about anything that I have knowledge of.
Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communicatiis important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.
This paper describes about my leadership strengths and areas for growth/future study. It also included how these qualities are used in my daily work routine, self-assessment results and a brief explanation on Individual style in leadership.
For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest weaknesses. Whether it’s a simple in-class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled with people, I can barely get my words out from the anxiety and stress. I’ve always admired those who seem to be able to just flow through their speeches without as much as a hint of nerves. The reason I decided to write my paper on this specific topic was to learn about different tips that people have for public speaking.
Pursuing a career in business is something I aspire to achieve and want to prove to my parents that I am capable of having a future career that is seen as undesirable among my parents. One course I gained from my overall time as an undergrad is public speaking. Like many of us, we dread speaking in front of an audience. On my first day in Public Speaking, Professor Donaldson’s said, “People feared public speaking more than death.”
Before coming United States, I spent around 18 years going to school in China. I can say, in China, we do not or at least seldom do public speaking. What we do is mostly sitting down as listeners and hearing others do their presentation. In short, we, normal Chinese students, do not have the opportunity to give a speech. However, I guess I am one of the lucky people. I was selected as the compere for many big events. Even I was not giving an entire speech, I still had the chance of standing in front of many audience. So I think I will discuss this in this paper.
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
One of my greatest strengths at work that I have recognized would have to be my ability to be a well-organized individual. I tend to write what I have to do down on paper and prioritize what is more important to least important. In doing this, it helps me organize and accomplish my work and meet deadlines that are important. A personal strength that I have at home is patience. I am a mother of a beautiful three year old little girl who is a handful. Patience is my greatest strength as a parent and individual which I possess especially being a single mother. I am a dedicated and hard working mother and I always make sure that my daughter gets the love and attention she needs.
