My Michigan hero is my dad. He not only was my dad, but he was my best friend. We did so much together and I don’t think I can forget that. He’s the kind of person that would expect so much out of me, but he did realize that sometimes, I can’t give it all to him. But I know that he gave his all to me, even though it doesn’t seem like it sometimes. My dad was a really hard working person. He always did what was best for me and my older sister. I can remember him always working and when he came home, it was as if I was meeting a celebrity. He was a celebrity in our house anyways. And that was what made it so hard for me to let him go. It’s been 10 years. It seems like it happened days ago based on how much I miss him. My dad had leukemia.
And we didn’t think he was going to make it. Months later we found out he was going to be just fine. I don’t think I’ve been happier. My mom and sister were overjoyed and a wave of relief washed over us. I would finally get my dad back to the way he was before! And that's when it fell apart. He had cancer. Again. So he had to stay. But the doctors were sure he would be fine, they said he was really strong and he was most likely going to be able to fight it. He was doing so well! And once again, we prepared for him to come home, and then more breaking news. Pneumonia hit him. The doctors than weren’t sure if he was going to be able to fight both of these things at once. But it was so hard for me to realize he couldn’t. Weeks later, we were giving him chemotherapy and he kept saying, “Hold my head up!”, because he was so weak. He had to fight it. I needed him to fight it. For me. His daughter. My sister. His oldest daughter. My mom. His wife. The three people he loved most. Those were his last words. I never heard him utter a word again. Hopefully I will some day. I remember holding the stuffed animal dog he gave me. Crying because I couldn’t believe he really was gone. I still, to this day, try so hard not to forget the memories I had with him. When he got married to my mom, he had that look on his face that said it all, “I’m the luckiest man alive!” He taught me in those final moments, that it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. But even though I want to be mad at everyone, I can’t be. In a way, he brought me closer to my mom than I’ve ever been before and my sister as well. I just hope he won’t ever forget about us.
Joseph Campbell studied ancient greek mythology for many years. Joseph filled each stage of the journey very well. He accepted all the challenges he got and all the help he needed. He really knew how to fulfill all those stages. Like everyone goes through a heroic journey everyone has to have a story to tell. My story is very contrasty from Joseph’s because he really knew what all the stages meant. My hero's journey consists of my threshold crossing which was when I started depending on myself more than I did on others, my helpers/mentors like my parents, teachers,my sister and many more influential people in my life and my rewards were getting awards in school, having a nice family, and many friends.
Stephen Richards once said, “When you do what you fear most, then you can do anything.” Joseph Campbell has written a three stage theory that every hero in a story goes through, a journey if you will. Every journey is different, but it's always structured around his formula, a hero will: separate from his/her known world into a new one, they'll challenge opposing forces or complete a series of tests, and lastly they return to their world again with a gift. Going along with this formula I've gone through my own hero's journey, and succeeded.
What is a hero? A hero isn’t someone who flies through the air or someone who has super speed. A hero is simply a person who inspires you to be great. Jose Luis Andalon son of an immigrant, migrant worker from Mexico is very hard working. He is 39 years old and short. He is the baby boy of six kids and was born in Salinas, California then moved to Gonzales, California. Luis Andalon, my dad inspires me to work hard and never stop working hard no matter what.
Some Michigan Heroes can be people that helped you in life or helped you succeed in life. My Michigan Hero is someone that raised me, taught me everything I know in life today. This person is my idol, that gave me a hand when I needed one, or told me to keep my head up and never look down. I wouldn’t know what to do in life if this person wasn’t in it.
My personal hero would be Inky Johnson. Inky Johnson is my hero because he came out of the projects and showed everyone that no matter what, if you set your mind to something, you can do it. He once said, “See something, believe in it, and go get it.” Inky Johnson grew up in the projects and was very poor. He told his mom when he was little that he was going to make it to the NFL, so they wouldn’t have to work ever again. Inky had a great High School career and was given a scholarship to play football at the University of Tennessee. Inky had made the starting lineup is sophomore year, and by his junior year he was projected to be in the first round of the NFL draft. Inky told his mom that in a couple months all of his struggles will be over.
I was in Ohio when I first came to America as an Chinese exchange student, I live in a little town surrounded by endless corn fields, basically in the middle of nowhere. I went to a small public high school, which has only 2 Chinese students, including me. All of a sudden my world is completely changed, nothing from my old days is left, and I’m totally not ready for that. I got so homesick, I began to miss everything about China, people, food, and of course, language. That’s probably the reason why I was so eager to speak Chinese every time I meet the other Chinese girl.
The time I accomplished something would have to be ever since I got a job myself, when I told my mom about the job she didn’t like the idea she wanted me to focus on school and helping her out at the house and taking care of my sisters. She wanted me to not worry and just worry about school but I see a lot of people my age working and getting money they earned by working and I got interested myself and for me it didn’t matter where I worked as long as I did.
“After a hurricane, comes a rainbow.” - Katheryn Hudson. My father, Morris Arvoy, grew up in one of the most dangerous cities in the world: Flint, Michigan. He has almond shaped, brown eyes, tan skin, and thick, dark hair just like his parents Jody and Floyd Arvoy. My hero knows the troubles of life; he is kind of like a rock, no matter how much weathering he undergoes, he stays solid and gets sharper. The ride gets easier. My dad is a hero. Through his own experiences he helps me with a big challenges in my life. My father has taught me that life goes on, no matter what happens today, tomorrow, or five years from now. I appreciate it; I really do. I'm going to honor him as best I can.
Dr. D is a cardiothoracic surgeon. He was my hero. He may well still be, even though he is a throw-back to the days when I was more concerned about science than symbolism.
My father has been a great influence in my life. The reason why my dad has influenced me is because he was able to raise me. My dad raised my two brothers and me by himself because my mother passed away. The day when my mother passed away was hardest time for us all. My brother and I were in waiting room with a friend of my Dad’s. My Dad came out of my mother’s room with worried face. My Dad told us that mother was not feeling well, so we
My father passed away in 1991, two weeks before Christmas. I was 25 at the time but until then I had not grown up. I was still an ignorant youth that only cared about finding the next party. My role model was now gone, forcing me to reevaluate the direction my life was heading. I needed to reexamine some of the lessons he taught me through the years.
My dad was a quiet man. He liked the solitude of fishing. He liked to be one with nature. It wouldn't occur to him that he was so popular, that he will be missed so much. Yet the very fact that so many mourn his passing says much more about him, and his kindness, than mere words.
My grandfather was a very loving man, he loved his family more than anything he had
One person that I care for very deeply is my dad. He is The reasons he means so much to me is because he helps me whenever I need help, plays sports with me, and he is just like one of my friends.
My hero is my dad. He is my superman. He is my leader. My dad is a dad who motivates me and keeps me going, even when I want to give up. He is there for me when I don’t want to try anymore and he always keeps me going. Of all the heroes in the world, my dad is at the top of the list.
