The organization which I am associated with you is Robert Morris University football team. The three people I interviewed were my coaches Mike Miller who is the offensive coordinator of the offense, Scott Farison who’s the defensive coordinator of the defense, and John Banaszak who’s the head coach of the program. When interviewing the coaches I was trying to see who was more like a leader or a manager. Therefore, I asked them some questions to confirm if their coaching style was similar to a leader or manager. The first coach I interviewed was Mike Miller and asked him the other coaches some questions. The first question I asked Mike was ‘how do you run your offense?’ His response was, “Well I run my offense based off of knowledge and …show more content…
not off talent.” I followed that question up with ‘If the player doesn't know their playbook which consists of 200 pages of plays are they still allowed to play?’ He then respond“Yes, if they don’t know anything they can’t play for me.
This offense is centered around order and if you can’t follower orders you will be lost in the systems because I know I don’t have time to take a step back”. You can see that coach Miller clearly isn’t a leader or manager somewhat like a dictator. The second person I interviewed was Scott Farison, the defensive of coordinator. I also asked him the same questions. Based off of his responses, he has more leaders treats because he understand his player’s weaknesses and strengths. the questions I asked coach Farison was kind of the same questions I asked Mike Miller. The first question I asked him ‘How do you run your defense?’ He answered with,“ Well I run my defense to were it benefits my players.” I followed up the question with ‘What do you mean by that answer?’ He then replied with, “I made the playbook simple and short for the players and this will make it easier for them gasp the concepts.” Coach Farison sounds like a leader because he cares more about the players understanding the tasks at hand so they can benefit. He also added that by making the playbook simple kids can play much better. The last person I
interviewed was John Banaszak which is the head coach of the team. The questions I asked him was different from the other coaches. I asked Coach John questions like ‘what does he expect out of his team?’ and he answered that he wants disciple and respect from his players. The other question I asked was ‘how do you manage your team?’ He answered with, “Well I just oversee what the coaches are doing and if I see something wrong than I will step in and take charge.” To me coach John sounds more like a manager than a leader. In conclusion, these coaches have different style of coaching. Mike Miller coaching style is more of a dictatorship. On the other hand, Scott Farison coaching style is more of a leadership style of coaching just because he understands his player and connects with them. Coach Banaszak is clearly a manager of the team his only role is to oversee the staff that’s under him.
Ashton Schultz Mrs. Schmidt EN 102 25 January 2018 My Coach, the Bully Playing volleyball had been my passion and a source of joy for me. I began playing in third grade, honed in my talent playing with friends and teammates in year-round competitive leagues. I had dreams of earning a spot on the varsity team as a high school freshman. Going into high school, I was an athlete with high confidence but after my freshman year I started to lose interest and began to dread practice.
Coach Herman Boone, who is played by Denzel Washington, is a very influential person. He is a perfect leader. While it cannot be found out for sure, Coach Boone can be classified under the trait theory of management, that “Leaders are Born”. The type of leadership he displays cannot be taught, he is able to bring together two different types of groups to act as one, to respect each other and play together. He shows power in the movie, he has a large capacity to influence others. Using his power, he gets the players to conform and forget how others think they are supposed to act towards each other. The goal specificity is also clear in the movie. Coach Boone expects his team to be ‘perfect’, he expects them to win the Virginia State Championship. Former head coach and now assistant coach Bill Yoast, played by Will Patton, is also a very influential person and good leader. He is in charge...
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. A quality coach can build a player up while a bad coach can tear them down. My goal as a coach was to always leave the player striving to be the best they could be. A good coach
From most of the questions I asked, they were a few of the basic things I would need in order to be a great coach. One of the main questions was taking criticism from fans. The fans are always just fans. Which means they know nothing about the amount of work your team puts in or know anything about what the team may be going through so just let them be. The most hurdle one will have to overcome is to telling a player he/she is not good enough for the
“If at first you don’t succeed try , try again.” At the age of six I was starting to play football. The game was a hard hitting running and commitment. I was six years old at the time now I’m fourteen a freshman in high school a lot has changed.
Throughout the book “Leading with the Heart,” I read about prime examples of the following leadership theories: transformational leadership, trait theory, behavioral theory, and situational leadership. He recommended that leaders begin with the trait theory when beginning the selection process when starting his or her organization. In chapter one and as well as chapter two, Coach K refers to coachable players. Meaning, players or members that do not mind being taught and learning; willing to take a back seat to someone else in charge. Establish right away in the first meeting the only rule for the team: “Don’t do anything that’s detrimental to yourself, because if it is detrimental to you, it will be detrimental to our program (Krzyzewski, 2000, p.4). He reiterates that leaders must be very selective in this process, because the people you select represent you as the leader, and your company. In some cases leaders must sacrifice some skill and talent for people who have outstanding character. “Character and respect will outlast talent when talent can’t see past themselves.” Krzyzewski mentions that he will sign a kid who has the character of a leader and train them to gain the skill necessary down the road. I believe that this is why the Duke Men’s basketball program is very successful because he picks
A proper coaching philosophy contains principles which improve character development, teach step by step tactical and technical skills, form proper progressive physical training regimens, and carefully utilize team management to handle and control problems with administrative issues. A coach with a sound philosophy should mold a team with strong cohesion, and he should treat players not only as teammates, but as family and friends who are encouraged to develop communication and lifelong learning of skills through positive support and role modeling from the coach (Mergelsberg, 14-15). The philosophy should also contain written documents of implemented strategies and techniques, so that the coach will know what to improve upon season by season
Gray Collins also focuses on how to evaluate coaching potential. The evaluation form is mending to help potential coach to make a decision on the possible success of a coaching relationship. A coac...
Coaches must have special players for this offensive strategy. Luckily Phil Jackson had the greatest of all time Michael Jordan in Bulls and Kobe Bryant in Lakers. Many people will say:“It is easy to win eleven rings when you have individuals like Jordan and Bryant.“ But if you ask me, I think coach Jackson and his strategy made champions of Michael and Kobe. They were just executors for coaches tactics. For example Oklahoma City Thunders have the biggest potential to win a lot of championships. With Russel Westbrook and Kevin Durant only sky is the limit, but they do not have Phil Jackson on the
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will”. Being a football coach requires someone who can be a great communicator. This person needs to understand communication on both sides an individual can not just demand that it's a one way street where you talk and athletes listen. The career of coaching requires history of the game knowledge of the game, extensive education, and positive and negatives aspects of the game.

“A coach is someone who is equipped to aid individuals or groups and organisations to maximise their performance in pursuit of their desired goals.” (Dexter et al, (2011) p.4)
However, after writing this essay and reflecting on my coaching ideologies, experiences and knowledge I hold, I am now aware of how my past experiences can and have influenced my current coaching practice. Also understanding, examining and identifying the clear links between theory and practice and how applying coaching theory can help guide my coaching practice.
His style of coaching sometimes changes. At first he uses aggressive, commanding style to let them understand that he is the authority figure. This made for the team to accept him as a coach and take him seriously. 2. Positive role modelling:
The purpose for having these coaches is to show great leadership and role model roles to team players as well as others. We plan to deliver this workshop on a face to face basis, Monday through Thursday beginning at noon and ending at 3p.m. In this workshop we plan to cover issues based on the
