My Canvas My freshman mentality was a canvas painted in the color of black and white, each stroke was controlled and drawn with precise lines. The painting showcased a picture of the cityscape-achromatic and neutral. I was another eager soul, confident to meet challenges. Brush lines of towering buildings reflected my aspirations; white dots of glowing stars represented my idealistic goals to succeed in my classes. I was determined, committed, and confident. I co-founded Care Club to fundraise money for national children’s hospitals. For my school, I volunteered to become a member of Link Crew; my role was to help create a fun school environment for the students by facilitating a stronger relationship between upperclassmen and underclassmen through games and group activities. My position as the secretary of World’s Travelers- a club that organizes summer trips for students to various countries, inspired my passion to travel. The extracurricular activities I participated in allowed me to explore different hobbies and allowed me to gain the fundamental skills of leadership and teamwork. My canvas is now colored with a variety of hues that reflects my newfound interests. Abstract images of shapes and forms mirror my imagination and creativity. In my junior year of high school, I joined the leadership program called ASB, also known as associated student body. I had the honor and role of being the school’s unofficial videographer to promote events with videos and short films posted on our social media sites because of my passion for video editing and artistic abilities. I also became responsible as being chairman for one of our committees to organize special recognition events for our senior athletes. ASB made my work stressful and challenging, but it was a good way to connect with others.
Students encounter many complications during their school career. Some students are smart, but just don’t apply themselves, or have similar hardships that are going on in their lives. These can be fixed if one can find motivation and confidence. In the story “Zero,” Paul Logan coasts through high school and college. Logan doesn’t know the tools to succeed in school, which causes his grades to fall. In the story “The Jacket,” Gary Soto explains how the way one dresses can influences how they feel about themself. Which in this case he gets an ugly jacket; which causes him to be depressed and his grades to fall. Albeit Logan and Soto went through similar hardships, they both succeed with motivation and confidence.
Middle School and AVID has prepared me for high school in many different ways. I will use everything I have learned in middle school and AVID in order to achieve success in high school. I have learned skills such as managing my time, organizing my work, and taking good and quality notes. If I use these skills in high school I know I will succeed. I also know that these skills would make it easier for me to reach my goals in completing dual enrollment and receiving at least a 4.0 GPA.

As I reached to pull the covers back over myself, I heard a something brush against paper, and metal rings pressed into my arm. Maybe it’s the fact that I tend to stay in my room all weekend, which leads to people thinking I’m studying when in reality I am probably binge watching a TV show or maybe it’s my glasses, but most people who don’t know me too well assume that I am smart. Now that is a great thing for me because I don’t have to try as hard to impress them, but I end up finding myself in a bit of a problem. The problem is that everyone thinks I enjoy admiring school textbooks. But the truth is I’m usually admiring my Justin Bieber poster on my bedroom wall. The light of the typical Ivy League student may not need to sparkle from within because the outside light is radiant; gifted from birth and straight A’s in advanced Shakespeare classes litter the scores of acceptance essays. The light of the atypical Ivy League student, conversely, needs to sparkle from within because of the adversity he may have faced. In order for him to transcend intellectually, he has to find that indomitable spirit. He needs to forge ahead against uncertainty because nothing was paved for him. Consequently, the light shines brighter because he has already fought the darkness from within, creating a stronger individual. This metaphor of darkness and light was taken straight out of the pages of my story. My childhood was not filled with advanced Shakespeare classes or any other typical Ivy League scripts, but it is not despite the adversity I faced but precisely because of what I faced do I feel Columbia GS would add a great chapter in the story of my life.
Over the four years that I have spent at Good Counsel, I became part of many activities. Each helping me evolve as a person and become stronger yet. Simple lists could be made of every activity that I have ever been involved in but it could never express to a person what I have learned and how it helped me to grow. Every environmental club, science club, political science club, service work, and S.A.D.D. club I was part of had a very special message to deliver to me. Whether the message was one of responsibility, or a life lesson, I grew from it. The Political Science club opened me to many new experiences. It allowed me the chance to attend the Model U.N., where I was asked to address today's top world issues. This club was very beneficial to me because I was exposed to topics and ideas that I had not previously been able to discuss or learn about in a classroom situation. The science club allowed for me to experience extra educational situations as well. I took part in a hovercraft competition, which was very educational while also allowing me the chance to work with others for a common goal.
My father always told me that my life is a blank canvas waiting for me to paint my future upon it. As I stand here before my fellow classmates, cherished friends and beloved teachers, I see more than just a graduating class, I see a group of artists waiting to exhibit their art to the world.
It will be one rough journey for the young artist, however. Life will throw him around in a complicated mixture of feelings, thoughts and emotions, as he will desperately seek to find out who he is and what his purpose in life is. As his mind keeps sinking in dark, depressive moments of contemplation, the world around him will gradually affect him less, and his subconscious will start building the foundations of a brand new world, inside his head. A world where clocks melt under the persistence of the moment, where the horizon bends under a quill and nature explodes into a force against which we are meaningless; a world of beauty, color and contrast where poverty does not exist; where pain, solitude, depression and agony have no meaning.
I am by myself wearing my blue jeans and an old flannel shirt. It is cool outside but I decided to leave my gloves at home, feeling comfortable with my warm shirt and my sturdy boots.

Nearing the end of an entire day of painting, I took a step back to look at the 578 square feet of the side of the building that was being transformed from an outlined sketch to an enormous painted scene. My thoughts were interrupted by a tap on the shoulder. It wasn’t unusual for people to walk up and begin inquiring about the mural we were painting. I turned around to see an older man, hunched over his cane. He surveyed some of the people we were painting on the mural, and then nodded at me with some form of approval, to let me know that I was doing a good job.
