I believe that my behavior change project was a success. I personally, was extremely surprised by the amount of easy changes I was able to incorporate into my daily routine; easy changes such as taking the stairs, parking distance, walking while completing homework, etc. The weather stayed moderately warm, so it was never a problem to walk to events and activities around campus and/or town that I attended. Additionally, I discovered activities, like hiking, that I originally would not have done. The hike through the Sculpture Park, in Stevens Point, turned out to be one of the highlights of my semester, it was a lot of fun! It was effective because it started by stating the behavioral issue and why it needs to be modified. Then this program formed various reasons as to why individuals portray certain behaviors. Next, the target behavior and the assessment of behavior was examined, measured and observed. During this time, a frequency tracking of the behavior was done and results were recorded. After obtaining the results, realistic goals were set with positive and negative reinforcement. Altogether, these steps resulted in a change in behavior which was evident by our test sample, Sarah. Most people have an aspiration to get rid of a certain unhealthy behaviour or to employ a new health behaviour that would benefit their wellbeing. Some examples include a wish to stop smoking, eating a balanced diet or getting rid of a sedentary lifestyle. Many psychologists have been trying to find a model that would help people fight these kinds of unwanted health behaviours. One of such is the Transtheoretical model of behavioural change (TTM) which will be the main focus of this essay. Specifically, how one’s sedentary lifestyle can be changed by bringing out a systematic exercising routine using TTM.
Out of positive reinforcement and punishment only the reinforcement was successful for my behaviour modification. I believe this was the case for a number of reasons but dominantly because the positive punishment had a lack of severity. The reason I came to this conclusion was because I realized in the case of positive reinforcement if I committed the operant response at least once my entire day of hard work would be ruined. When I made the switch to positive punishment I realized in the eventuality I performed the operant response I could just do the 50 push ups and be done with it. Upon comparison of my success and failure I reflected and realized if the punishment was more severe than 50 push ups I would not do it for actual fear and reluctance of doing the positive punishment. For example if the punishment was a 1000 push ups each repeated operant response I would most likely not bite my nails. I did enjoy the modified behaviour as my nails seemed fuller and less scarred but it was not long of an experiment enough so refraining from biting my nails was still a conscious action and took a lot of effort.
What I learned from the behavior change project is that it can be extremely hard to implement a behavioral change. Even if there is a real desire to make the change there are extenuating circumstances in everyone’s life that will test their resolve to change. That makes a high prioritization of the change a must. This also means that an physician must be understanding of a patient who is having a hard time changing. Being supportive instead of judgmental is paramount. The project also taught me how to develop and implement a change plan. The change plan is the ground floor to the entire change and failing to commit the time and energy to developing a realistic and goal oriented plan is a mistake. Finally having a good experience advising a peer will help future patients giving me experience and confidence to draw on.

The preventive obesity initiative pilot program will be evaluated monthly for its results of approval of the program with feedback from surveys from community members on their progress in weight management through educational workshops of obesity, healthy diets, increased physical activity, and availability of affordable foods. The results of the success of the preventive obesity initiative pilot program will be determined based on monitoring, observation, evaluations, and community member’s satisfaction and progress, as staff members work hard together as a team to combat obesity.
The Transtheoretical Model is used to understand how individuals change health behaviors. Use of this model aids in developing interventions, appropriate for each stage of the change process. The model includes a total of six stages of change, which are: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination (Glanz, Rimer, & Viswanath, 2015). During the precontemplation stage, individuals have no intentions of taking action to change their behaviors within the following six months. During the contemplation stage individuals have an intention to change their behavior within the next six months. Individuals of the preparation stage, intend to take action to change the health behavior within the next 30 days. Action
The SMART goal of the obesity program is to reduce the obese population in Pitt County by creating a healthier diet program. Different objectives will be needed in order to reach this goal. The first objective is that from July 2016 through December 2016 100 community members will participate in the health department’s health promotion activities. This objective aligns with the reinforcement construct of the Social Cognitive Theory. By repeatedly participating in the activities, the 100 community members will be rewarded with the knowledge they receive and also motivation to change their behavior. By having an enjoyable time, they will be rewarded and want to keep coming back to the activities. The second objective is that following the 6-month duration; the majority of the participants will lose 2-10% of their original body weight by changing to a healthier diet. The reason the participants need to lose 2-10% of their body weight is to either prevent or reduce the chances of gaining other health diseases associated with obesity, including coronary artery disease and Type 2 Diabetes. This objective aligns with the self-efficacy construct. By losing a little bit of body fat, the participants will believe in their ability to lose weight, and continue to do so. The third objective is that on June 17 and June 24, informational brochures will be distributed to the community members to create awareness and reminders to join the obesity program, and gain knowledge about the health condition of obesity. This objective deals with the behavioral capability construct of the Social Cognitive Theory because the participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to change their behavior through the brochures.
The behavior change I pursued included running 3 miles a day for three days of the week. In this analysis I explore how my perceptions fit within the Theory of Planned Behavior, overview specific methods of change, evaluate pitfalls, social support, and identify potential areas of improvement.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. All results did give positive impact on me and I clearly identify a visible path for improvement to become a successful Leader/ Manager. I pledge to preserve these principles of Organization behavior in my current job and eventually make myself to higher positions in the firm.

I will seek those interventions and encourage my patients to participate and or incorporate them in their day-to-day lives. My life experiment was to learn and memorize 5 new signs a day. Along with learning new signs, once a week I did a worksheet from a workbook I got for Christmas. After getting sign language flashcards, workbooks, and a sign language dictionary, I was and still am feeling motivated to learn five new signs a day. This was my choice for my life experiment because in college I want to major in Communication Sciences and Disorders, to eventually become a Speech Pathologist. A Speech Pathologist helps either kids or adults who have a difficulty in their speech which, in some cases, means working with patients that are hard of hearing. Learning Sign Language is essential in becoming my dream career.
