I volunteer at an organization that is called Seattle Music Partners. It is an organization that arrange volunteer tutors with students who cannot afford to learn music. I am teaching the Clarinet to a student for about 3 years now. I teach not only the instrument, but I teach them how to read music and basic music theory. I have learned so many different things due to this experience. I learned how to communicate effectively and deliver my thoughts with strength. The most memorable thing that my student told me was that she would like to pursue her career in music because she learned the excitement of playing music. This is why I continue to volunteer as a tutor because I enjoy the fact that I became a contribution to someone else’s life.
I am dedicated to helping out our community and school, because it warms my heart and soul. Seneca said in about 40 to 60 A.D. that you should “be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favors you have received.” In other words you should not boast about the numerous projects you have accomplished and how much physical work you executed, but rather pride yourself on how you helped people in community and school, and how you have affected their lives with positive means. I feel life is joyous and it should be the feeling everyone illustrates, and this is exactly what keeps me functioning in the stressful world today. I find comfort in helping others to make their lives a little more like heaven and this comfort motivates me to perform copious service projects to the best of my capability whenever I find the time. Time is fair to the rich, the poor, and to every race, because time is equal and gives everyone 24 hours daily to accomplish their required tasks. Because time is so valuable and I am occupied by difficult advanced placement and honor classes and juggle school, clubs, sports, and friends, I joined Key Club, a high school division of the adult service club, Kiwanis. Key Club opened new doors to make every extra minute count towards helping others.
I am going to take the class Practicum, which is a health science class where I get to work at a hospital and learn how to become a medical assistant. At the end of the year I will take the licensing exam and hopefully will be able to get a job as a medical assistant. I am also thinking of rejoining HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) because there are medical volunteering opportunities as well as school medical competitions. I now volunteer with the other members at elementary schools, parades downtown, etc. I think volunteering in any form is very good for teaching the values of service, how it’s important to give back to the community and help those who have have helped you. I volunteer for AVID and NHS.
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it.
After seeing the impact music can have on one person, I was enraptured with the magic of music. It hit me like a brick, creating a sense of calm once I determined what I wanted and what I could give to people. I continued to make the most out of my internship, and dug into the activities, helping plan, lead and create these engaging ideas while maintaining a psychological approach. I have also frequently administered private bassoon lessons to younger students. The ability for people to soak up knowledge like a sponge never ceases to amaze me, and teaching others has, in turn, made me a better student. The advantages to teaching frequently inspire me to better myself. Music has played a large role in my life, and performing music grants me the freedom to express and interpret the nuances of the simple black notes on the page to create a masterpiece. I am discovering myself daily, and over time, I have evolved into who I am today. My goals surround music, helping others, and bettering myself and the world around me, and the ample opportunities enable the efforts towards these
I started volunteering at the food bank and the soup kitchen in grade 9, with a nudge from my friend. During my time as a volunteer, I would ask for donations and collect any non-perishable food items. Later I would go to the Soup Kitchen, to help cook some of these items and serve them to those in need. My volunteering experience allowed me to experience the environment and face situations that I otherwise would not. The most stressful and challenging situation was during my volunteering in the Rehab unit at the hospital. I was assigned to help a student therapist in assisting a patient in walking. The Patient was overweight and it usually takes more than two people when assisting the patient in walking but the therapist and the patient felt confidant enough that she would be able to walk without much help. When the therapist and I began to assist her in standing the patients knees buckled under her and she fell and began screaming in pain. The combined strength of the therapist and I were not enough to help get up and the only thing we were able to do was straighten out her legs and comfort her until more help came. This year I have served 74 hours for Learner Leadership Council, 27 hours for National Charity League and 17 hours for New Tech High at Coppell. One of my favorite places to volunteer is at Cornerstone Closet where homeless adults come to get needed items and take showers. We get to help them find clothes, and necessities and spend time talking with them. Another organization that I spend a great deal of time serving in the summertime is Metrocrest. We put together the food backpacks for families through the Backpack Summer Hunger Project. These organizations reach out to other organizations and charities and assist with acts of service. Even on campus I have been able to serve others. Being a NTH@C Tour Ambassador has been an important way for me to give back to my school. I enjoy showing others our learning environment and the importance of what happens each day. By attending clubs on campus is also another way that I feel is a pertinent way to serve alongside others and celebrate their passions. School events such as ‘The Day’ and other school wide bondings also exemplifies service participation. It is a powerful way to show our connection to those around us on a daily
For as long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed writing. Writing is an opportunity for me to express my thoughts and feelings while helping me grow to understand who I am as an individual, a student and furthermore, a future teacher. Yet, if someone were to ask me how I do it, I am afraid I could not give him or her a clear and precise answer. Trying to find that answer almost seems harder for me than the actual writing process itself. However, after having done my student teaching last semester, I have learned that modeling my own writing for the students not only helps them to see more clearly how I write, but helps me understand how I write as well.
Tutoring kids is one type of community service. I can say from experience teaching kids to learn is a great feeling. I know because I’ve been tutoring kids for almost seven months. You’ll be surprised how it makes you feel. To have one of your students’ parents thank you because there child has never been able to make an “A” in there reading or math class. Just hearing those words lets me know that I am already making a difference. The place that I volunteer at is Casa De Amigos and the children that go there really look up to you. Yes you’re helping them to be able to reach their goals but you’re also teaching them that helping the community can change so many lives.
The first time I started volunteering was last year and it changed my perspective towards a lot of things; from the way of looking at people to how my mind works. The impact it's had on my life has been immense and life changing. From there, I constantly tried getting myself involved in giving a hand and at the same time, to widen my knowledge.
In middle school, given the limited choice in electives, I signed up for a class titled "Counselor's Aide." Come to find out, the class was actually a tutoring program, where we would be assigned to a class of children that needed volunteers at Rainbow Ridge Elementary. My first year in the class, 7th grade, I was assigned to a kindergarten teacher, and for the next ten months I spent an hour every day reading to the class in groups, or helping with math and vocabulary one-on-one. It was perhaps the most rewarding thing I had ever done: seeing at the conclusion of the year handwritten thank you cards from the kids that I had helped teach how to read and write, especially considering how many of them only spoke Spanish on the first day of class
Lastly, I have always loved volunteering and the feeling of helping others. I regularly help out with national, or world, organizations as well as the local ones. I participated in packaging food for Feed my Starving Children and assisting kids picking out new bikes for Bikes 4
I have a passion for helping others. If somebody asks for help either in the classroom or just for general advice, I always take time out of my day to help them even if I am extremely busy. The fact that I can be of assistance to others makes me feel good on the inside. Seeing others succeed is important to me. I always help my friend with his math homework because math is not his strongest subject.
Throughout high school, I tutored elementary school students at the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Community Center near my high school. I helped students with their reading assignments twice a week. I really liked this job because the students were fun to work with and I felt like I was doing important work as I saw their reading levels improve over time. This was an experience that made me have an interest in working specifically in Native American communities. Even though this group of students was a different tribe than me, I felt connected to them as we had a similar background of being indigenous peoples.
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart.
