In middle school, given the limited choice in electives, I signed up for a class titled "Counselor's Aide." Come to find out, the class was actually a tutoring program, where we would be assigned to a class of children that needed volunteers at Rainbow Ridge Elementary. My first year in the class, 7th grade, I was assigned to a kindergarten teacher, and for the next ten months I spent an hour every day reading to the class in groups, or helping with math and vocabulary one-on-one. It was perhaps the most rewarding thing I had ever done: seeing at the conclusion of the year handwritten thank you cards from the kids that I had helped teach how to read and write, especially considering how many of them only spoke Spanish on the first day of class

Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
With basketball completely out of the equation, my quintessential career path would be to become some sort of counselor. Before jumping to conclusions assuming a counselor is someone who just sits back with a pen and notepad all day giving the occasional “how does that make you feel”, a lot of things need to be taken into consideration about how much time, and effort and strenuous work is required to pursue this career path. A counselor (depending on what field) is typically someone who uses therapeutic techniques to help patients strengthen existing qualities and skills used in everyday life. Ideally I would like to become a school counselor to begin coping with the minds of the youth, then hopefully move on from there. In order to do so I would need to complete 4 requirements. First I would have to get my masters degree and/or doctoral degree in counseling: While doing so I will need to minor in psychology. Second I’d have to take on some sort of internship and learn to deal with human stress and anxiety. Third, after my education and training I would need to pass the specific states exam. And finally I would have to apply for my professional counseling license.

Volunteering has been one of the fun things that one could ever ask for. I volunteered at church to be a Sunday school teacher and it has been a blessing. To me being a Sunday school teacher to children is more of like being a nurse taking care of kids to make them feel comfortable. Since I would like to be a Pediatric Nurse, this becomes a form of learning and helps me to know and interact well with children. In my psychology class, I learned a pediatric nurse who studied psychology may have a better idea of how to ease the fears and confusions of young patients and can to treat them better. Since I am dealing with children, all these I have learned helps me in my volunteering experience.

I have not always known that I wanted to be a counselor, but I have known that I wanted a career that consisted of helping others. I was really nervous about doing this first practice recording. While I knew how I wanted to start the conversation, I was stressed out about the unknown that comes along with these sessions. I am constantly listening to my friends talk, but how I had to respond for the counseling session was very different than what I am typically used to. I usually give my friends my opinions and advice on how I would handle the situation. It was hard for me to just sit back and let my classmate talk. I wanted to respond to many of her statements, but I had to take a step back and really just listen. In these types of counseling sessions my thoughts and opinions are not important. Rather, the focus should only be on the person you are counseling.
When I first thought about this competency and all the nuances and complexities involved, I was very excited as I have a profound interest in learning about theories which govern our work as counselors. Moreover, I believe they play an essential role in one developing a greater understanding of how the field works as well as provide us with the knowledge needed to apply ourselves effectively. Integral to meeting criteria for this specific competency I believe were the courses of helping relationships, counseling theory and practice, social and cultural foundations and my internship experience. Upon discovering that the course counseling theory and practice was offered online, I became very scared and nervous as throughout my life I have been very apprehensive about online learning. In order to be an effective counselor, one must remember to keep the client(s) in mind. The goal is to assist the client(s) in living the best life possible for that particular person or persons. With that being said, one cannot forget that they have their own set of morals, values, ideas, and the like. Social workers have to keep in mind that there will be cases that are complex and a favorable outcome may not be possible. My beliefs about counseling have changed from the time I entered college up until now. I come from a family that has very strong religious views and when something “negative” occurs it’s due to karma, but if it’s good they claim it was because of God. When I was younger, my family would always have conversations about family members or friends and calling them “crazy.” In my aunt’s case, she said she would hear voices at times, but my family would blame the “dead” trying to communicate with her. My family has always avoided speaking about mental issues, since they believe psychology is “dumb.” I grew up think that counseling was for crazy individuals because my family would say so, but as I grew older I started to gain a different perspective. My previous experience in counseling encompassed three different aspects. The first is Decision Counseling which involves leading individuals in giving their lives to Christ. Next, Commissioned Lay Counseling assists in leading individuals to view life issues from a Christ-centered perspective. Lastly, Coaching consists of leading individuals to have a different view on past negative life experiences. A study performed in 1992, reported approximately 3,400,000 youth had failed to complete high school and were not enrolled in high school (Starr 1998). This statistic is based on the United States where job competition has greatly increased due to technology. Many of these student lacked the support and training necessary to succeed in today’s society. Currently in every high school across the nation, there is a person responsible for offering support and training to the youth of America. Available for all students is a guidance counselor. Counselors within the high school setting play an influential role in the forming of post high school goals through the planning of numerous activities.
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart.
