The first time I started volunteering was last year and it changed my perspective towards a lot of things; from the way of looking at people to how my mind works. The impact it's had on my life has been immense and life changing. From there, I constantly tried getting myself involved in giving a hand and at the same time, to widen my knowledge. Growing up and being in college, I had to keep myself motivated at most times and I've always thought it would be great having the potential to influence and standing out to inspire.
I have participated in several volunteer opportunities as a Girl Scout, singing Christmas carols at a local hospital, picking up trash along the beach, working at a homeless shelter, leading events for younger Girl Scouts and much more. These opportunities have influenced me to become aware of the struggles within my
I volunteer at BLCI because I know the challenges and barriers that come along with being a Latina and first-generation college student. My hope is by volunteering, I can help minimize these challenges using my academic and personal experience. I have been involved with BLCI since the 6th grade. I volunteered at college panels, assisted with fundraising events; I tutored students, reviewed college applications and scholarships. During college, I was able to gain the necessary experience and resources to further serve the families at BLCI. I spearheaded and developed a yearlong community engagement project called EmPOWERing Youth. The partnership was between SDSU PowerSave Campus, a student-led energy efficiency program and BLCI, a 3rd -12th
I started volunteering at the food bank and the soup kitchen in grade 9, with a nudge from my friend. During my time as a volunteer, I would ask for donations and collect any non-perishable food items. Later I would go to the Soup Kitchen, to help cook some of these items and serve them to those in need. My volunteering experience allowed me to experience the environment and face situations that I otherwise would not. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality and lifestyle that many individuals in our society face today. My time at the food bank and Soup Kitchen helped me understand the importance of giving, ...
The most stressful and challenging situation was during my volunteering in the Rehab unit at the hospital. I was assigned to help a student therapist in assisting a patient in walking. The Patient was overweight and it usually takes more than two people when assisting the patient in walking but the therapist and the patient felt confidant enough that she would be able to walk without much help. When the therapist and I began to assist her in standing the patients knees buckled under her and she fell and began screaming in pain. The combined strength of the therapist and I were not enough to help get up and the only thing we were able to do was straighten out her legs and comfort her until more help came. I felt really bad what happen but
Since I was in the first grade, I have been a part of the Girl Scouts, which has caused me to make a positive difference in my community. Participating in Girl Scouts has enabled me to engage in many fundraisers and charity events. While I was a part of scouting every year around Christmas time my troop and I would set up an event feeding the homeless at a local church. Serving and talking to different men and women caused me to reflect on my life and made me realize that I should be more grateful for what I have. My life is not as hard as others, and it is nice to give back to those who deserve
I felt as if I was able to make a change even though it wasn't a major change. I also loved working with kids of all ages ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade. They all brought a different personality which I enjoyed. Overall, volunteering anywhere helps someone make a change in someones life and their own even though they may not notice it. There are many people who are in need of volunteers all the time and not many people get the opportunity to volunteer during their lifetime.
The Christmas in October Program is an annual event I participated in that helps someone who is less fortunate by fixing up their home. It is a two-day event where exterior and interior work is done on a home. The program requires a company to sponsor the project, and volunteers to do the actual work. It is called Christmas in October because it takes place in October, but feels like Christmas because of its memorable effect. Participating in the Christmas in October Program was the most meaningful work I've done because of its lasting effect on me.
When I volunteered at the Boys & Girls club, there was these group of girls who were friends but then an hour later one of the girls were crying for whatever reason. One day two of the girls came up to me looking distressed; they said that the others were making fun and talking behind their backs. When they told me this it remind of a time back when I was younger and I had the same issue, the only difference was being who I was I let them walk all over me and I didn't want that for these girls. I gathered these girls together and just tell them to speak to one another, get what you say off your chest, free yourself, after I told them this they just started talking and saying what problems they had with each other. After they talked about their
Even though I’m struggling to find time to volunteer because of work and other obligations, I still love to volunteer. There are times when I never see the effect my work has done. I like those moments the most, since they have the most
There is no doubt that volunteering is beneficial when applied locally and done with truly altruistic motives, but when the concept of volunteering is marketized in poorly constructed volunteering trips aimed primarily at high school graduates looking to make a change in the world by visiting a so-called “Third World Country”, it opens the door for unskilled volunteers to unintentionally be part of the neocolonialism debate and to develop the idea that a privileged, wealthy, benevolent white person can be the sole savior of the whole African continent after painting a wall in a rural village in Ghana.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
I never thought that I would have fun teaching and serving others. But that could also be to me having close friends around me. It was a great experience, now I just hope young kids would change their attitude to their elderly, because I wanted to smack them so hard but I didn't. I refrained myself. But I served them food, taught them how to defend themselves, and had a fun time while I was there. Not only is it good exercise, because it felt like was running track before the season even started, but it will help me with my college application.
Primarily, volunteering aided me in intellectually developing myself. For instance, it has caused me to become more independent. After, having to be in charge of a group of people, I felt like I could do everything I
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
Working alongside you and all the other staff and volunteers has been an awesome experience to say the least. The first day I showed up i was skeptical at first about how well i would be able to fit in with all of the faculty, volunteers, and students; but I was gladly surprised to find how generous and genuine everyone truly was. You all have been so helpful and i cannot express enough how grateful i am. I originally volunteered at Hadley for my English class at College of DuPage and every part of it has exceeded my expectations.
