How to Conquer your Mindset Your mindset is the most dangerous thing you have. It can determine how your day, week or even your life can go. Your mindset is what controls how things in your everyday life play out, and how you react to the events that unfold around you. That's all because of the way you think of this, or they way you were taught to look at certain situations. When you hear negative words thrown at you how does that make you feel, how does your mindset change? I hear the words “you're a weak player, no one wants to pass you the ball” from my dad after each and every game. My spirit is droped, my emotions get the best of me and I can't help but cry and break down. I start to think, why did I play this sport why can't my dad see that i'm trying my best.I just wanted to quit. Then I realize i'm not weak I am a strong powerful player and I deserve my spot on the team. That's why I can't quit, I use that as my motivation to get better. The only way that's possible is to have a growth mindset, with that I can do anything I set my mind to. …show more content…
In the book Mindset, by Carol S.
Dweck he explains that a growth mindset leader should alway have the mindset of “ there is the emphasis on teamwork, not the royal I” (Dweck,126) When i was a swim coach last summer my “leader” coach of the age group just took over the whole practice. I would just sit down with my feet swaying in the water of the pool because I would just get told “no that's not a good idea” or “yeah maybe we'll do that next”. It made me not want to be there, and I felt as if I was useless out there, and I got the impression that I couldn't help the kids learn. Although one day I thought to myself, this is good learning opportunity! I am learning different ways to help this kids get better at something they love. I realized that I can't just have a fixed mindset, I can take my experiences from this and use them when I am the lead coach and can control my own group of
swimmers. While having a growth mindset you feel as if failure helps you succeed in the long run. When Dweck talks about how Michael jordan was proud of his failures, that changed my perspective. Now that i think about it i shouldn't be so ashamed of myself that i failed a test, i should have the positive growth mindset and use that to think “wow i did horrible but now i know i need to study harder and go slower on the test next time.” I now know that failures are just experiences that we can take and choose to dwell on them or to learn and grow from them. I have chosen to learn from them, experiencing failure gives me the opportunity to understand what I did wrong in a situation and how to improve on it so that I can prevent it from happening again. Having a growth mindset allows me to move on from failure and discouragement is part of what makes me who I am and continuously allows me to grow and improve in order to become the best version of myself that I strive to be.
Leaders are made, not born. Whether you lead on the field, in a classroom, within a family, or at work you must build a solid foundation of skills that you can use to lead others to achieve phenomenal results. Emerging trends in the United States alone have a significant impact on what we expect from others. As we, experience a fast-paced ever-changing world there is one character that has remained consistent and necessary. Leadership. Herman Boone, one of the main characters in the movie, “Remember the Titans” said, "Without character, we have no legacy." (http://www.umich.edu/~urecord/0405/Jan24_05/15.shtml) “Remember the Titans” a story about the racial integration of two coaches, a team, and a community. During the course of the
“Leaders instill respect for authority by having a caring attitude, by being direct, by communicating regularly and by being honest!” (Mike Krzyzewski). The book “Leading with the Heart,” is one about leadership, how you earn it, how you practice it, and how you are to use it to make your organization a successful one. Coach K talks about the importance of trust, communication, pride, and the commitment the leader of an organization must have to make his team. He goes on to state that “leadership is ongoing, adjustable, flexible and dynamic. Leaders must stay on their toes, being that anything can occur during the year. Krzyzewski also mentions the competitive fire the leader must bring day in and day out to keep his players, and or staff in
There are leaders in every situation and facet of life, leaders are everywhere around us, both in the business world and out in the community. Leaders can be Supervisors, Managers, Pastors, Teachers, or any person in any situation where they are trying to get a group of people to accomplish a specific goal. As stated by Don Clark “Good leaders are made not born” (Clark 2010), leaders are developed by experience, training, education, and by watching and learning from other leaders. Our children are learning how to be leaders everyday. They learn at school from their teachers and after school, they learn from their friends and parents. One of the most impactful leaders of children in every community is a youth sports coach. In 2006 it was estimated that forty-one million children played youth sports (Hilgers, 2006). So if so many kids are playing youth sports why do we sit back and let bad leaders influence them?
As a college basketball player, I learned that being an effective leader did not mean that I had to be a constant bundle of energy. Rather, I realized over time it is more important to understand your teammates and what makes them tick, and to translate that knowledge into separate leadership styles to match each individual. This is crucial when working with an extremely diverse group of attitudes, personalities, and mindsets. I believe people would describe my style as steady, positive, and upbeat – opposite of my head coach in many ways. Countless times I would pull a teammate aside who had been berated and explain in a constructive
Maybe it’s the fact that I tend to stay in my room all weekend, which leads to people thinking I’m studying when in reality I am probably binge watching a TV show or maybe it’s my glasses, but most people who don’t know me too well assume that I am smart. Now that is a great thing for me because I don’t have to try as hard to impress them, but I end up finding myself in a bit of a problem. The problem is that everyone thinks I enjoy admiring school textbooks. But the truth is I’m usually admiring my Justin Bieber poster on my bedroom wall. Ever since I was in sixth grade I’ve been a huge fan of Bieber. His music always brought a feeling of calmness and back in the day his “never say never” motto, was what I lived by. I might still be living by that motto because I’ve decided to write this essay
Becoming a leader was something that I would have to work for. I became a leader when I was a freshman in high school and I was determined to be a successful one. I knew that it was going to take some time to earn respect from everyone on the team, but my theory was to give respect so I can receive it too. My greatest advice that I would give was to never give up no matter how many times you
Personal Narrative: The World The world is a messed up place and we are all stuck here until our lives are through, or until we choose to leave. It's strange that I go along with everything everyone tells me, such as that I should wear certain clothes or listen to certain songs. I often wonder why I do the things I do, but then I just realize that's who I am. People are confused about why they are here, and they don't understand what life is supposed to be about.
These past few days, I learned a lot about myself. One of the things I learned about myself is that I am a, Auditory learner. I didn’t agree at at first and after I read it, I said to myself that ‘’That is totally me’’.It said that as a, auditory learner is a person who listens to ideas and loves to tell jokes and I often like to talk to myself. I have trouble writing, and that was one of my goals for this year to become a better writer. I don’t really read body language because I like to express myself a lot and that is what makes me a better learner in my own way. I am very social, I always come to school with something on my mind that I need to do or fix and I have problems of my own. I guess that’s not very personal because everyone
Motivation is by being dedicated. I motivate myself by doing the things I love. Dedication will advance to motivation.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.
There is a point in everyone’s life when they step back and realize “I can’t do this anymore, it’s ruining my life”. Many of my friends have started smoking cigarettes while drinking at a very young age, and continue to use this drug currently and don’t realize the affect it has on their future. While I have been smart enough to avoid smoking, I haven’t been as wise at making decisions when it comes to drinking. The amount of partying I’ve done in college has taken over my life, and has had a huge impact on my grades. Changing my drinking habits and continuing to avoid cigarettes will enable me to be the best I can be for the rest of my college experience.
In order for these concepts to be effective they must be centered on the group/team mentality, there is no way for these to be applied as a one-man show. In order to be a leader you must have one vital ingredient, and that is people who would be willing to follow and allow you to have influence over their live, thoughts, emotions and resources. One can only draw so much motivation out of self, but when placed in the right environment and surrounded by highly motivated people, the sky is the
Being a leader for in almost any given situation has been an innate quality that I have possessed for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself nominating myself for leadership positions. My most recent and fulfilling leadership position would be my eleventh and twelfth grade school years when I held the position of Drum Major for Purnell Swett High School’s Marching Rams. Being in this position meant that I had to give up the spotlight of performance, turn my back to the crowd, and lead my fellow band members on and off of the field of competition, high school football games, and community parades. Over the course of these two years, I have learned many defining qualities about myself and have learned how to incorporate these newly learned and innate qualities to my everyday life. Throughout this two year experience the quality that I feel tested more than others, was the quality of patience. Often times before I held this position, I found myself becoming extremely impatient with individuals and situations when they would not go the way as planned or as smoothly as I had planned for them to go. This position taught me that not all situations are going to run smoothly and that we need to make the best of what we are presented with. It also taught me that not all individuals learn at the same pace, the same way, and at times do not handle individuals close to their own age giving instructions on how to complete a task. With this realization, I found myself trying to find methods of teaching that appealed to all individuals as well as found ways of not coming off as trying to force individuals to complete the tasks the way that I see fit.
Consequently, my definition of leadership was very different than four years prior. One of the most important characteristics of a leader is the ability to teach, and then immediately lead from behind offering assistance when needed. Because our team was very young this year, I often would demonstrate a volleyball skill or play, and then stand back to watch my teammates learn and practice. In addition, I’ve learned that having someone who is always supportive and able to lift spirits is essential to playing well as a team, so I was determined to be that person, and hopefully inspire others to do the same. Having experienced both repetitive losses and the crushing of certainty, I searched to find a happy medium.
The negative feedback given to players by their coaches is one of the areas in sports where people often ignore. There are various types of feedbacks given to players by their coach and two specific types of behaviors used to classify feedback include reactive and spontaneous feedback. When feedback is given to the players, they create a motivational climate which can either be ego-involving or task-involving. Ego-involving motivational climate can be created when the coach yells, undermines, shouts at or isolates a player. Task-involving motivational climate is created when a coach’s feedback impacts players positively. Coaches should appropriately give comments and avoid those that create a negative motivational climate for the players and can lead to mental
