Embarrassment and Realization
Basketball. A sport known for dribbling, dunking, and shooting a basketball inside a hoop to have more points than the other team at the end. Something that it is also known for is loose, button-up pants. Ya know, the ones that The Harlem Globetrotters usually yank off before every game for some humor to the games. Lucky for me, I absolutely loved those pants and purchased a pair when I was young. A month later, IT happened. Yes, I’m talking about IT.
It was sixth grade. Kids all around. Sun beaming on the playground and all over the outdoor basketball court. Unintelligible yelling and cringey dancing anywhere you look. I didn’t want anything to do with any of that chaos. I saw that there was nobody on the

basketball court, so I grabbed a ball and headed over to practice my inefficient handles and horrid shooting.
Oh, did I forget to mention that I am utterly horrible at basketball. That might explain a few details later. Anyways, as I approached the court a few other guys came and saw that I was the only one there. “Hey were you about to start playing on this goal?”one of the kids asked humorously. I wanted to reply with a smart-off type of answer, but I didn’t even know the kid so I just replied with a simple yes.
“Well we’re about to play a game and we already have an even amount of people.”
“Well why don’t you play me 1 on 1, and whoever wins, gets to play on the court.” I have NO idea why I decided to say that. Even though I have ZERO talent when it comes to basketball, I wanted to “defend my turf”. So he agreed on that and we got to playing and it was going pretty well. For him that is. It was 9-0 and he only needed one more point to win. I was not going to go out like this. Not without scoring at least one point. So the next time I got the ball, I would score. He starts dribbling and kinda just messing around with the ball since he
already knows it’s a guaranteed win. Meanwhile I had a plan to settle into place. It was time. “Hey that teacher wants you.” I had no idea if that would work, but miraculously, it did. So then, it was my chance. All my focus was on scoring this basket. Nothing else around me had any significance. I dribbled the ball, put my eyes to the net, and went for the shot. Slowly time faded into slow motion. As it floated towards the rim, it bounced up into the air, which seemed like forever. Finally, the ball sank into the net. I felt proud, but for some reason I also felt cold. Then, I realized IT happened. While I was focused on the shot, while the ball was floating in the air, one of the guys watching had yanked my pants off and was holding them in his hand. I had done what I needed to do. I did what I set my mind to. So while I still have my pride, I grab my pants and walk to the nearest bathroom and button my pants up. That’s when I realized something. If I just set my mind to one goal, and only that one goal, I can accomplish it. I didn’t let anything around me affect my goals and what I put my mind to. Through pure determination and will, I took my shot, and I scored. That was all I needed. So in the end, I was proud of what I did, and still am today. It showed me to stay with something if you truly are determined to finish it. Except basketball.
The game of basketball along with football and soccer is one of the most prominent sports in the United States and the World. It’s played at every level from 5 & under to the professional athletes in the NBA and overseas. Every team is made up of virtually the same elements; the guards, big men and coaches. Basketball is not a sport where you can focus solely on yourself, but the focus should be on the team. The sport is very public and easy to see, however there are many things that occur behind closed doors when no one is looking.
It was the most competitive three days of my life, basketball tryouts. This is the first time my friends and I were trying out for a school team, we were all hyped for basketball season. I entered the tryout excited and consequently energetic. Adrenaline was pulsing through all the players bodies, there were 6 foot tall 8th graders with years of experience competing against 6th graders who have never touched a basketball before for the same spots. I was in between, I was a 6th grader that had experience along with some skill. That was also my downfall, I went in overconfident and consequently cocky. I wasn’t planning on getting cut, I walked into the tryout overwrought, nothing could stop me from being on the team.
The next face Dedham won it. The kid shot the ball immediately, but I saved it. The one thing my coach always said to me was, “to use the element of surprise; they would never expect you to leave the net.
The game of basketball is recognizable high school or the NBA. The sport is very popular and is played worldwide. Everyone may also know the sport from some names of basketball stars. Maybe the names Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Dr. J, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, or Carmelo Anthony ring a bell. They are all outstanding players of the game and have a significant understanding of how the game is played. Basketball has changed alot overtime and has become one of Americas most played sports.
Basketball in my home state goes way back, straight to the beginning. The University of Kansas (KU) hired James Naismith, the inventor of the game, as its first basketball coach in 1898. The fledgling sport caught on, and has gained force ever since. KU was also the scene of the emergence of Wilt Chamberlain, who dominated the game like none other. At the same time that “Wilt the Stilt” was breaking out, Kansas State University (KSU) had a basketball coach by the name of Tex Winter. While not as well known as Chamberlain, Winter’s contributions to the game of basketball may have been even more significant. Ask any Bulls or Lakers fan where the “triangle” offense (and resulting championships) came from.
Basketball is a sport that has changed in various ways since its invention in 1891. It has evolved and expanded across the United States and across the world. Although it has had its ups and downs basketball is still a sport that is enjoyed by over 250 million people in this world. Today it is one of the biggest sports known and it continues to grow every year with new players bringing new styles and competition. The changes throughout the history of basketball can be shown through its origin, how it developed into a competitive sport, and its evolution into present day leagues.
My team and I were warming up and shooting pucks. My friends and I were messing around while we were warming up. After about 5 minutes my coach blew the whistle, tweet! So then we all went over to the coach, and he told us all the drills we were going to do today. We were going to have to do six drills for the
Basketball is a big part of my life, one year ago in tournament final game two of our best players were hurt and the team was relying on me. With the time winding down on the clock we were down 8 points. Somehow I got our deficit down to two points with 30 seconds left, after an intense defensive stop 10 seconds remained on the clock; our coach called a timeout. A play was drawn up for me to take the shot. Mitchell inbounded the ball to me as I came off of a screen, I had an some-what wide open shot, I took the shot, you could hear the crowd go silent as the ball left my hand and headed towards the basketball. It felt like everything was going slow motion, the ball was getting closer and closer to the hoop and I…….missed it. The buzzer sounded
The scariest thing that I have ever experienced was dislocating my knee during my high school basketball game. While attending Forestview High in 2013 the second game of the season, I acquired my knee injury against Highland Tech. I was very excited about the game because I worked very hard to take a senior spot and was finally getting the opportunity that I was waiting for. Everyday during practice, I gave my all, all the blood, sweat, and tears that I experienced I just knew it was my time. Tuesday, November 22 we get to Highland, warm up, and finally it's time for tip-off. The first quarter I get off to a rough start getting all the jitters out. Second quarter arrives, then I began to get the feel of the game. As I penetrated down the lane after hitting a mean crossover, I came to a jump stop
The two other boys looked at me with shock in their eyes and cleared the path for me to walk. As I walked up the boy he seemed to be afraid. I recall asking him what he is afraid of and he told me he was afraid of me because he thinks I’ll punch him in the stomach like I did with the other boy. I started to laugh, and he looked at me confused I told him I just did that because I wanted the cars back and because I wanted to play with him.
competition. Whoever gets the most points in basketball, gets to play with a team in front of
College basketball, where most young high shool basketball players wish to excel. It is a sport of passion, dedication and motivation to succeed. To quite a few basketball players, it is a way to earn money to provide for themselves, but that is only in the NBA where some players recieve salaries (Sanderson Siegfried 125). These athletes are not only players, but students who carry along education and this sport at the same exact time. Students who might just have student loan debt or students who struggle in their college classes (Hoop Dreams 29). All students do not even recieve a full athletic scholarship to a college and they have to fight to keep their places on the basketball team. Players who work hard at basketball practice, during
Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. There were never any practices, it was just one or two unorganized games per week. I never took
I recently moved to a suburban town known as Wauconda which was about forty minutes north of Chicago. Leaves were lightly falling down trees in the October atmosphere. Snap! That’s the sound of me stepping on the leaves. My next door neighbor, Patrick, and I were just waiting for our school bus to arrive. We were both fifth graders and middle school only seemed like an imaginary thing. We were just more curious about the middle school than our own school. Rampages of first and second graders get annoying after awhile, you know?
Seeing my friends again was exciting, but what was more important was scanning the playground for what I could play with during midday recess before lunch time rolls around. This time, everything was game. The swingset, the sandbox, basketball hoops, monkey bars, and slides were all available to us now and we had to make the best of it even though we still had 5 years ahead of us. 11:30 rolls around and the whole class of 26 first grades stampede out of the classroom door, and race for the playground as the teacher yells desperately trying to get us to leave in an orderly fashion. My group of friends immediately sprinted for the swings. The swings allowed us to get a full view of the playground, talk to friends, and even try to see who could get the highest the fastest even though going too high was against the rules. Eventually swinging became the popular thing to do on the playground, so we were forced to find something else to play with the next
