A lot of colleges adopted the sport because, “ It was good competitive exercise for students and students didn't have to be strong to play basketball”. Once the YMCA started to host more basketball games they realized it was dangerous and soon banned it from their gyms. A few of the well-known professional teams at that time included the New York Celtics and the Buffalo Germans. The New York Celtics were considered a very dominant and successful team. Due to the start of World War I they briefly had to disband their team, but later started it back up again. The formation of the National Basketball Association (NBA) was created on August 3, 1949. This was due to the merger of the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The NBA teams actually played against the American Basketball Association (ABA) for nine years until the ABA folded. Four teams from the ABA are actually part of the NBA today- Indiana, Denver, New York, and San Antonio. The NBA began to become a widely popular league and is known for having some of the best players known today. Eventually, in 1996 the NBA formed the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) with 8 teams making it still a fairly new league today. An African American woman named Sheryl Swoopes was the first woman ever signed to play in the WNBA. Their first game wasn’t played until 1997 with the New York Liberty playing the Los Angeles Sparks. A team was made in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2003 giving the NBA a total of 30 active teams, while the WNBA has a total of 12
Since its creation in 1893, the sport of basketball has been one of the most popular sports in the United States. One wouldn’t have to search long to find a basketball court and a pickup game in most American cities. Many people around the world look up to the stars of the National Basketball Association as role models.
In 1891 James Naismith created the game of basketball, this game started off as a game only man played. James Naismith was a Canadian P. E teacher and invented the game for his students during the winter. The game of basketball started in Massachusetts where Naismith invented the game and has now spread throughout the world. Backstory of Basketball Basketball has been played since 1891, and still continues to be played today as well. Basketball is an intriguing game played by 2 teams with 5 players from each team on the court at the same time. Basketball, as it started out in 1891 had no African American athletes in the sport. That was still going on, even as late as the 1950’s.
December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.
Basketball is defined as a game where two teams of five play each on a rectangular court, usually indoors (Basketball/Sport). Basketball was invented by James Naismith on December 1, 1891 (Basketball/Sport). The object of basketball is to shoot the basketball through the opposing team’s basket and to out-score them by end of the regulation time limit. If the score is tied at this time, the game will go into overtime until one team wins. While reading about basketball, I found it interesting that when the sport was invented they would nail baskets to balconies with no backboards. This made it easy for spectators (in the balcony) to help their team by either swatting the
As of today, there are six teams in the NBA that originated from the BAA. The NBA claims the BAA as its own basketball organization. The NBA games were first being held in ice hockey arenas because the owner wanted to give the arena more attraction while it was empty on nights ice hockey games weren’t being played. While the NBA, (originally the Basketball Association of America) was formed in 1946 by owner of ice hockey arenas, today the NBA is the most important professional basketball organization both in the United States and internationally. There are given reasons on how the media and technology changed the way we view sports, how the National Basketball Association became so popular in the United States and internationally, and why the NBA is the most succeed basketball association in today's society.

Basketball has been around for a long while. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he invented the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they’d be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to get the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out.
On November 6, 1861 the great James Naismith was born in Ontario, Canada to Mr. and Mrs. John and Margaret Naismith. As a child James wasn’t very successful in school but excelled in physical activates, this triggered him to drop out of school and become a lumberjack. Soon after this he realized that he needed to turn his life around, so he went back to school to receive a degree in physical education. He later earned a job at a local YMCA in Springfield and was immediately put in task of finding a way to keep men in shape during the winter seasons. After many unsuccessful attempts he finally decided on a sport in which the players must throw a soccer ball into a peach basket on either side of the gymnasium. So on December 21, 1891 the newly formed game known as basketball had its first official game, the final score 1-0. As time passed different basketball leagues were formed the Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. In 1949 the BAA joined another basketball league, the NBL, to create the currant league, the NBA. The NBA was a great success with many people. This success would led it to what it is today, a multi-billion dollar association known for consisting in a wide variety of elite athletes.

However Trenton defeated Brooklyn 15-1 to win the first professional basketball game. Two years after the first basketball game was played the National Basketball League was formed. Shortly after that league was formed a lot of other leagues began to form all across Eastern United States. There were four that formed (The Philly Basketball League, Eastern League, New York League, and The Interstate League). Most early basketball leagues only lasted a few weeks at that. Being part of the basketball clique in high school helped me learn the intrapersonal and social communication skills I use today. As a child playing basketball was my favorite activity or hobby. It's also the way I met a lot of my good friends that I have now. All my close friends I have met. I have met them through playing basketball.. Whether they were on my team, the opposing team or just fans in the crowd who admired my play. Not only has basketball helped me gain friends, but basketball also taught me a lot about life. There are many aspects of life that coincide with basketball. For instance basketball is a team game and an individual game. Like in life you have to work together with other people. The communication skills I learned from basketball helped me communicate with friends, girlfriends, parents and bosses at work.
The game of basketball as we know it today was invented in December 1981 Springfield, Massachusetts by a man named James Naismith. This game was originally made to condition athletes during cold months. When basketball first started there were 13 set rules and instead of a rim and a net as we play today peach baskets were used instead.
