Basketball Then and Now Can you imagine playing the game of basketball without a three point line? Basketball has constantly changed throughout history and continues to change today. The National Basketball Association has risen in popularity and is now one of America’s more popular sports. Because basketball continues to be a popular sport, a fan should learn about the origin of the NBA, how the game evolved from the late 1940s to the early 2000s, and how the players today impact the way it is played. Although many sports are not considered American-made, basketball is one of the few that began in America. In fact it is the only major sport that can be considered American-made (Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). The inventor of basketball was Dr. James Naismith, who created the sport in 1891(History.com Staff, NBA is Born). This was all the way back when there were only forty-four states(nbahoopsonline.com, NBA History). He made the sport in Springfield, Massachusetts(History.com Staff, NBA is Born). Naismith invented this sport because he was P.E. teacher seeking a sport with limited physical contact, but it contained running, jumping, shooting, and hand-eye coordination(Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). There seems to be two sides differing in opinion as to just what is going to become of the National Basketball Association. On one side are those who feel as if the league will never recover from the lockout and the loss of Michael Jordan. With the whole labor dispute being about how to divide 2 billion dollars in television revenue amongst its owners and players, the NBA fell into the dark shadow of professional sports. Much like what Major League Baseball faced back during the 1994-95 season, the NBA must now try to overcome its tarnished image from the lockout during a rebuilding time in which the whole nature of the game has changed. No longer is their anymore championship dynasty's, players that are associated with one team, or college seniors entering the draft. But rather, now there is a league that is dominated by talented 21year-old's more focused on personal sponsorships and popularity than on winning.

One wouldn’t have to search long to find a basketball court and a pickup game in most American cities. Many people around the world look up to the stars of the National Basketball Association as role models.

E teacher and invented the game for his students during the winter. The game of basketball started in Massachusetts where Naismith invented the game and has now spread throughout the world. Not only did the sport start to pave its way, but so did women’s basketball. As time went on women’s basketball took off and became more popular with changes along the way.

This sport is not just becoming popular in America but in many other nations such as Spain, Lithuania, Australia, and Croatia. However, one player in the United States named Stephen Curry (Steph) is changing the game of basketball by becoming one of the deadliest perimeter shooters of all time. Despite the opposing views of being unable to change a sport individually, Stephen Curry is evolving the game of basketball himself through his shooting efficiency, his ability to consistently make “bad shots”, and becoming a dominant threat in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The rules of basketball have changed, grown and are much more complex now. There are now more ways of fouls, violations, and we have added different player positions as well.
