Many of us know of the fun game of basketball, the object of the game is to basically run up and down the court and shoot the ball, and block the other team when they try to score. Whichever team has the most points at the end of the game is the winner. According to Bran Faurschou’s article, “ NBA Hoops Online” Basketball was invented in 1891 by, Dr. James Naismith. He was a physical education instructor. Back then the game of basketball was a little bit different, It was the same concept but it was different. Most of the rules Dr. James made , are still used today. Out of the 13 rules Dr. James made 9 are still in place today, the rest were just thrown to the side. The first team had 18 players, and the team was split with 9 people on each side. Dr. James didn’t have the money to pay for the real rubber balls back then so he just used soccer balls. Since the game was new to all the players the final score was 1-0 and was played for a whole 30 minutes with no stopping.Of course being that the sport was getting really popular, other people and organizations had to test the game of basketball out. According to Bran “Most of the YMCA in the Norther Eastern United States, and Southern Canada had facilities to accommodate players.” The first competitive leagues were local, within the larger cities of the east coast. On November 7, 1896 the first professional basketball game was played in Trenton New Jersey between the Trenton YMCA and the Brooklyn YMCA. They played at the Trenton Masonic temple, and they charged admission into the game. “All of the players got paid $15 dollars, Fred Cooper was the only player that got paid $16, by him getting paid $16 dollars, he became the first highest paid player” Bran …show more content…

After the NBL was formed other leagues started to form everywhere. Most of the early leagues barely lasted, maybe only a few weeks. The NBL only lasted 5 seasons. In 1902 the New England Leagues got a lot of publicity because they let a black man named Bucky Lew play in a game of basketball. Colleges started to mark the game of basketball, and sponsoring games. At first it was only a few colleges like, Yale, Minnesota, Dartmouth, Columbia, Chicago, Utah, and the Navy. In these earlier games there were problems with injuries, because no fouling rules were in place. “In a 5 year time span many activist groups were trying to get the government to place restrictions on the sport” Bran said, they didn’t like how violent the game of basketball was, so they tried to get it banned, but that didn’t last very long. That restriction never came to past, because the president didn’t think that it was necessary to ban the sport. The Original Celtics were a team called the New York Celtics, the New York celtics started in 1914, but they ending due to World War I. After World War I a man named Jim Furey, and his brother Tom restarted the team. They brought a lot of new things to the game of basketball, and they introduced zone defense, and the first contracts to any player.
