Basketball Observation

During my time at Jefferson Middle School, the three Physical Education Majors decided to teach about Basketball. When we decided this, we needed to decide on what date we wanted to evaluate ourselves and reached a conclusion that the second day of us teaching a lesson would be the best fit. My class contained fewer females than males and at least three students with an IEP. On the day of recording, the other students were especially troublesome, they decided not to listen or try which could have been based off of the two hour delay or just not their favorite activity to participate in. Based on the RISE model, I went through and gave myself a grade. For purposeful planning, I gave myself mostly 3’s. I wrote the lesson plan so if a student picked it up he/she could read it and understand exactly what I was asking them to do. For example, lesson one was about dribbling and we did drills based on dribbling to help improve their skill because during the pre-test most students would not even dribble the basketball in for a lay-up. One thing I know I struggle with is checking for understanding. My students in this case, were older than the ones I am using for my SCE. So checking for understanding was not as difficult for me as I thought it was going to be. I decided to place them in game like situations and see who has been paying attention and from what I noticed, most of the students were not paying attention when I was teaching. With the help of Mr. Brown and Ms. Jones, we were able to see where the lines got blurred. Such as when to dribble, when to shoot a lay-up or simply just playing three on three basketball. For future reference, I can explain more thoroughly why they need to know a specific skill in basketball or in any sport and help them become mastery level of the skill before putting them into
