Looking back to the beginning of my first semester and going to this class for the first time wasn’t what I think now about the class. In the beginning I didn’t think we would learn that much since we meet just two times a week. Now that we are done with the class I think that I have taken a lot away from it. It was probably the most helpful class to help with the transition to college, to figure out how everything works. My peer mentors really helped and their advice is really good because they have been in our shoes. They know exactly what it is like to be in our shoes. The first few things we had to do was interview a fellow classmate and an upper classman. Wasn’t my favorite thing in the world because it forced us to get a little uncomfortable because you had to interview someone you had never met before. After interviewing with a peer in my class, I thought It was really good because now we go up to each other and talk. We would have never done that if we hadn’t interviewed each other. It was very intimidating because there are almost 300 companies looking for employees and you have to compete with every agriculture kid for those jobs. Before the career fair I was expecting to talk to the required 3 companies and leave because I wanted to return home to the farm this summer. After the career fair my perspective on my summer changed a lot. I ended up handing out almost 10 resumes and talking with so many companies. Instead of going home to the farm I have been interviewing with companies to intern this summer. I realized that if I can go to other companies or farms and learn from them that I might learn something to take back home to the family farm that could benefit. Career fair was something that I was least excited about but afterwards it ended up being my favorite thing that we got to
Overall, I was grateful for this experience. I was able to find out more about the behind the scenes responsibilities of our schools’ leadership.
The biggest lesson I learn during this class is time management. I have a 9 month old baby and he allows wants my attention. I had to rely on a family member to take care of him while I get a few hours to read the textbook and do the writing assignments. I had to truly focus on my work and not go to social sites because I barely had time to do so.
Many students who are enrolled in FFA are already heading in the right direction to a bright future. FFA has many career benefits within the program. Any of the career development events (CDE’s) have something that will tie to a career in agriculture or to a career of other sorts. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. When I arrived at the career fair, I was a little overwhelmed at first. There were so many different options to choose from and I was unsure as to where to start. This was my first ever career fair so I truly wasn’t sure what to expect.
With college right around the corner and taking a college course gave a real sense of how college classes are going to work giving me an edge over all of the other students going to college that didn’t take a dual enrollment course. Dual enrollment was honestly one of the best decisions I made in my academic career because like what I was saying this class taught me the inner workings of how most assignment are going to be turned in, what it means to be self-reliant/ on your own have no help with assignment from your parents, experiencing a course that only a handful of assignment rather than a ton of assignment ends up making up over eighty percent of your grade (getting you to work extra hard so you won’t fail) and finally that you have to actually interact with the professor/teacher if you need help or are having trouble with an
For the Global Tech simulation, we were arranged into groups with individuals we had not become acquainted with beforehand. Subsequently, there were no personal introductions or pre-class strategy meetings in preparation for our first class meeting on that Saturday. When the instructions were initially given and our simulation experience began, it was quickly realized, by the team that time was going to be of the essence. We immediately confronted the fact that there was no way we could watch all of the interviews provided in the simulation. After everyone had begun making mental and physical notes about the interviews we had already viewed, we collectively decided from there which interviews were going to be the most important for us to observe
This week was very exciting in terms of my informational interviews and being able to work security at a music event. The informational interviews not only helped bring the classroom to the real world but also provided me with real examples to better strengthen the connection. I also learned a lot in terms of dealing with the public in a busy environment and how to most successfully defuse a situation in which alcohol and alcoholism are involved. The informational interviews I conducted between the Chief of Cleveland Police and the State Fire Marshall were both helpful in connecting the classroom to the real world. The Chief of Police was very insightful when asking him questions about the Cleveland police department.
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
When we were first given this assignment I had not put much consideration into it. I thought we were to ask a couple of questions, it would all work itself out and I would be done. But this was not the case. The thought and reflection put into interview questions really surprised me. There was far more factors other than the questions you were asking, because you were also dealing with people, people who are giving you there free time, their attention and opening themselves up to you a stranger, so there were far more responsibilities then what were initially at hand.
Helping people, whether it is through difficult times or to just achieve a goal, is one of the most rewarding of human experiences. However, with it being so rewarding, there is significant difficulty behind successfully helping someone. Luckily there are people that specialize in helping such as peer counsellors. Although helping does come naturally for some, certain things can be learnt to make one a better helper.
During my time in this class I have experienced new things that I have never before been introduced to. The things I have learned while in this class is things I can use to help me understand in the future when I am aging what is going on around me. This whole service learning process really taught me a lot.
Overall, this has been one of my favorite classes in that I can work at my own pace, make my own deadlines (besides the due dates), and communicate with others in ways I had never done before. I am more of a hands on, face to face, confrontation kind of student,
This previous Summer I had the privilege to work with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind as a program facilitator. Here we provided recreational and vision rehabilitation programming in an inclusive and safe environment for a diverse group of people. We worked with veterans, people with recent spinal trauma injuries, and partially sighted youth, families and seniors. Focusing merely on the partially sighted population I worked closely with, there are a number of issues they face on a daily basis, which they understand is influenced by larger, macro structural and societal forces at play. Some of these issues include, accessibility, communication, participating in athletic and recreational activities and employment opportunities.
