The pediatric office organization I work for is a small office with no one person being in charge as a nurse leader, manager or supervisor. Furthermore, every nurse works independently taking care of their patients. However, one of the reasons we function so well and the office runs effortlessly is because we do work together as part of a team to meet each patients’ needs. Together our common goals are exceptional care and improved patient outcomes in our sick patients and the maintenance of health in our well patients. Additionally, it is vital that the physician and nurse communicate effectively to provide the highest care for each and every patient.
At Kids Choice Pediatrics we do not have nurse leaders, managers or supervisors but each nurse has to have a certain set of key skills to have success in their job. Most of these skills cannot be taught and must be a part of who you

are. Key skills that are most valuable to each nurses’ success in our office are compassion, empathy, selflessness, and also being self-aware. These along with valuable communication can improve family and patient satisfaction. The actions and/or characteristic the nurse attributes to his/her effectiveness would be a confident attitude in working independently.
Feeling secure they have the capabilities to provide the best possible care. Additionally, communication attributes to each nurses’ effectiveness. To speak and listen successfully is one of the most important characteristics a nurse can have. Lastly, adaptability is a characteristic that is needed no matter what area of nursing you are in. It is essential to be able to deal with changing schedules and working longer hours than originally planned.
Nursing is definitely seen as an indication of quality in our organization. Without our nurses, we would not have a practice to run on a daily basis.
They are an integral part of our office. The nurses are usually the first point of contact and since we are in a smaller community, without a lot of providers the benefits to our patients is improved by the nurses. Also the communication is more open in our office due to our close relationships with each other. We are like a “small
family.” Nursing is linked to quality outcomes in our office. Not only are they the first health care professional seen in our office by a sick or well patient getting a physical but they are also a wearer of many hats. These include being comforter, respiratory therapist and even lab person. Their skill set is of importance because it saves our office time and money when a patient can have their labs drawn here or a nurse picks up on a child’s illness and relays it to the doctor for faster and improved outcomes. Most important our nurses give patients and their families’ compassion and support at a time when they need it the most. They treat the total person and not just their health issue.

Ill children are extremely difficult to manage as patients and have the tendency to have a rapid change in status while patients in the hospital. Providing safe care for pediatrics during hospitalization is an area that I am not too familiar with. Working the ER I have had many pediatric patients, but the parents always remain with the patient. When peds patients are admitted, hospital protocol states that the patient must be present during the transfer of the patient to the admitting floor. As a future nurse practitioner, I have given immense thought to the selection of a clinical practice based on the primary care setting that utilizes the collaboration model. I have selected this type of clinical practice because it best suits my professional and personal goals. I value autonomy while having the ability to work within a healthcare team and enjoy teaching my patients. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are a valuable part of the healthcare team. In the 1960s, from a vision to improve primary healthcare to under-serviced communities, the development of the first NP program developed out of need as a public service and focused on the care of pediatrics and since then the care of other specific populations such as families, adults, geriatrics, and women health has emerged (Anderson & O’Grady, 2009, p. 380).
Skills that a nurse may need to ensure that individuals are treated fairly and the care that they need is specific to them include; a good listener, this makes sure that the patient applies trust in you as a nurse and trusts you to help them in their time of need. Reliable, this helps the patient to have trust within you and this may help them with day to day lifestyle choices and could boost self-esteem. Good communication skills, this will ensure that the patient gets a say in the care that they receive and they have the right to refuse treatment, although this is not the case in some cases.

“Collaboration among nurses, physicians, and other members of the care team can improve the outcomes of care for patients” (Engel & Prentice, 2013; IOM, 2010). The patient outcome is related to interprofessional communication because multiple professionals make the patient’s goals. This will give the patient the best possible outcomes upon discharge. Many years from now, I’ll take this experience with me to better myself as a nurse. Sanger acquainted me by telling me her thoughts on what characteristics of an excellent nurse. When you are being taken care of you want to have someone who is compassionate for their job. The nurse is doing this job for the pleasure of serving others not herself. Team player is important because you want everyone to work together and help each other out. A nurse should be smart and have common sense; when she said smart Mrs. Sanger did not mean have the high GPA but knows what they are doing and how to do the procedure correctly. Time management is another characteristic a nurse should have because some prescription needs to be dispensed at a certain time.
