Nurses not only provide care but they play many other roles. For example, nurses are considered a communicator, teacher/educator, counselor, leader, advocate and collaborator (Taylor, Lillis, Lynn and LeMone. 2015). As a caregiver, nurses provide physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs. In addition, as a caregiver, nurse integrates the roles of communicator, teacher, counselor, leader, researcher, advocate, and collaborator to promote wellness through activities that prevent illness (Taylor et al. 2015). The primary role of a nurse is providing care to patients. One positive behavior a nurse should have is keeping boundaries between work and personal life. If a nurse is having a really bad morning at home, she shouldn’t express her emotions while she is working with patient. The patient and the coworkers don’t need to suffer because a nurse is having a bad day. Another positive quality every nurse should have is good working habits. They should come to work at least half an hour early so they can get organized and prioritize their work before starting the shift. In a health care setting, everyone works as a team. As a result, it is important to communicate properly respectfully with the public. There are two types of communication, verbal and non-verbal. “Verbal communication is an exchange of information using words, while nonverbal communication is information without the use of words”(Taylor et al. 2015). A professional nurse should use proper grammar and spelling while verbal communication. Nonverbal communication indicates facial expression, touch, eye contact, and posture. Patients are always observing, for example, if a nurse enters the room and makes no eye contact and negative body language, the patient would feel as if he/she is bothering the nurse or the nurse just doesn’t like caring for him/her. Further more, it is important for the nurse to communicate with the families or the patient. For example, if the patient were a 5-year-old boy, his parents would probably do most the communication. Standards are important aspects of nursing that a nurse must learn and implement every day for the rest of their nursing career. These standards provide for a nurse’s competence in the quality of care they deliver to the public. Standards offer a necessary guidance to nurses everywhere in an effort to ensure that people are treated correctly and ethically. Patients expect nurses to have a general knowledge of the medical realm and to know exactly what it is they –as nurses- are responsible for. Nurses need to have a sense of professionalism that enable the patient to feel safe and secure, knowing that a competent person is caring for him. A lack of professionalism does the opposite, making it impossible for a patient to trust or respect the nurse caring for him. Standards of nursing, if utilized correctly, give the nurse that sense of professionalism the patient is expecting. It insures for the safety of the patient and allows the nurse to provide quality health care that is expected of a medical professional.
Nursing is constantly evolving and changing, in order to be more efficient in providing care than in the past. The nursing profession includes professionals who are not only caregivers but support systems as well as educators. All these factors help to provide optimal care for patients and to also better serve their families and the community. All nurses are encouraged to break down the simplistic notion society has about the nursing profession because nursing is a multi-faceted profession encompassing many different factors that are beneficial to overall human development and health.
Professionalism in the workplace in many professions can be simplified into general categories such as neat appearance, interaction with clients, punctuality, general subject knowledge, and likability. In nursing, professionalism encompasses a much more broad and inclusive set of criteria than any other profession. Nurses specifically are held to a higher standard in nearly every part of their job. Nurses are not only expected to uphold what it seen as professional in the aforementioned categories, but they are also expected to promote health, wellbeing, and advocate for patients, but also continually provide the highest standard of care, demonstrate exemplary subject and procedural knowledge, and abide by the Code of ethics set forth by the American Nurses Association. This Code of Ethics includes the complex moral and ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, fidelity, honesty, and integrity.
Health care professionals should maintain professional conduct, and abide by the code of ethics for nurses to prevent disruptive behavior.

I have had an amazing experiences and practice by going to clinical which helped me improve upon my nursing skills and EOP SLO. It can be seen, being prepared, maintain professionalism and safe practice, having exceptional communication, respecting culture, adapting care across the lifespan, promoting health education, and having an admirable nursing process were all valued and demonstrated by me.
While on the unit I made sure to use my time wisely, I completed my assessment in a timely manner, advocated for pain medication, checked on fellow nursing students, and kept patient’s rooms organized and clean.
