After I walk across the stage and take my diploma I will be going to medical school to accomplish my dream of being a Pediatric Dermatologist. I am unsure of which school I’d like to attend, but I prefer to stay close to home where I can see and take care of my mother on a weekly basis. I plan to finish up school and move onto my residency in a hospital which I can only hope will be Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. I have been a patient there for many years and see the arduous work and dedication they have, to helping their patients through a tough time in their life, hoping to just make the day a little easier. My college plans include attending a two-year college and then pursing a degree in dental hygiene. I believe that I will have a great opportunity to give back to my community with my chosen career. As a dental hygienist, there would be many ways to help young and old alike. The time that I would volunteer would enable me to become more involved in the life of our community.
In an effort to increase the enrollment of students of colors (African America/Black, Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American) students, BSC should offer a scholarship for these students. Similar schools such as Rhodes and Berry College offer scholarships for minority students. Rhodes offers the Dean’s Scholarship, which provides varies students of color $25,500. Some criteria for the scholarship are: students must have a minimum GPA of a 27 and are very involved in the community. Berry College offers the Goizueta Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a number of Hispanic student that attend Berry College.
One important detail of my future I would share with myself is about all the different hospitalizations I had. During these hospitalizations for surgery, I had met a Child Life specialist. I would explain that a Child Life specialist is a person who works with pediatric patients to help them understand what is going on around them in the hospital. When explaining to myself about the duties of a child life specialist, they use different treatment methods such as, therapeutic play, talking to the child and family about a procedure, distraction during medical procedures, and medical education. I would remind myself that the staff at Mayo, Clinic has done those things with you, and it really helps you get through a rough time and not be so scared or anxious next time. I would explain that a Child Life specialist works with children to help with the emotional part of the hospital stay. As a high school senior, people are constantly bombarding us with questions about our college and career choices. I have applied to several universities and for numerous scholarships, but on graduation day, it will all become reality, and I will begin to embark on our adult life. My ultimate goal is to specialize in neonatal-perinatal medicine as a neonatologist. Neonatologists are doctors that take care of premature or high-risk babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (“Neonatology”). Although life has many unforeseen obstacles, my journey of being a well-rounded person will begin with me planning to “Love Purple, Live Gold” (“Louisiana”) by attending Louisiana State University. I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My immediate goals after completing this program is to take some time off from school, pay off our (additional) student loans, and when the time is right possibly evaluate the feasibility of pursuing my Bachelor Degree in Healthcare Administration or continue on in trying to obtain my Master 's Degree in Nursing. I have known from an early age that I’ve wanted to become a doctor. Helping people has always been a passion of mine. When I was younger, I wanted to be a veterinarian. However, after working with young children I have found that I love working with them, and have a connection with children.
