Proposal for Student of Color Scholarship
Brief Description
In an effort to increase the enrollment of students of colors (African America/Black, Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American) students, BSC should offer a scholarship for these students. Similar schools such as Rhodes and Berry College offer scholarships for minority students. Rhodes offers the Dean’s Scholarship, which provides varies students of color $25,500. Some criteria for the scholarship are: students must have a minimum GPA of a 27 and are very involved in the community. Berry College offers the Goizueta Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a number of Hispanic student that attend Berry College.
I believe diversity is very important, because learning with people from a variety of backgrounds encourages collaboration and fosters innovation, thereby benefitting all students. Students should be challenge on what they believe. The Center for American Progress says “Our nation is changing, and our higher education institutions need to reflect this diversity. More than half of all U.S. babies today are people of color, and by 2050 our nation will have no clear racial or ethnic majority. Communities of color are tomorrow’s leaders, and we need to better prepare our future workforce.” I agree with this. Birmingham-Southern should also represent the neighborhood it is. No person of color in the Birmingham area should ever feel like BSC is not an option for them. I believe this scholarship, combine with other community initiatives will help increase the number of students of colors on campus.

For almost two hundred years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities or HBCUs have played a pivotal role in the education of African-American people, and negro people internationally. These schools have provided the majority of black college graduates at the Graduate and Post-Graduate level; schools such as Hampton University, Morehouse University, Spellman University and Howard University are four universities at the forefront of the advanced education of blacks. For sometime there has been a discussion on whether or not these institutes should remain in existence or if they are just another form of racism. There were also concerning the quality of education provided at these institutions. In my opinion, from the evidence provided in our own world today, HBCUs are very important and significant in the education of black people throughout the nation, and are essential to our society.
In order to fully understand the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as the importance of their preservation and need for continuation, one...
In this brief report, I will be examining common practices, policies and resources that support Black women attending Princeton University. Included is a brief review of national averages in regards to higher education attainment and a rationale for continued rhetoric on this topic. My interest in this topic stem from my experience at State University’s Women Studies Program. While the conversation around gender is necessary and crucial, little attention was given to discussions of how race and gender affect an individual’s lived experience. I was constantly aware of my lack of representation among students who were in those classes and the faculty who taught.
Clearly, HBCUs provide several benefits to African-American students. Not only have they helped to combat the cycle of discrimination that minority students experienced before the civil rights initiatives of the 1960s, but they strive to provide a warm, supportive and inclusive academic environment that addresses African-American college students as a whole person. Additionally, HBCUs are increasing their efforts to ensure that higher education is accessible, affordable and achievable for individuals with unique socioeconomic challenges. Despite obstacles, historically Black institutions will continue to play a vital and significant role in the fabric of higher education.
To begin, I exhibit scholarship by maintaining a 4.0 GPA; keeping this distinction is not an easy task. It requires an intense work ethic, solid determination, and an overall desire to stand out. Grades are a key point in measuring scholarship;
The Jackie Robinson Foundation is a national, non-profit organization that gives scholarships to minority youth for higher education, as well as preserving the legacy of the Baseball Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson. The foundation provides four-year college scholarships in conjunction with a comprehensive set of skills and opportunities to disadvantaged students of color, to ensure their success in college and to help develop their leadership potential. This four-year hands-on program includes: peer and professional mentoring, internship placement, extensive leadership training, community service options, and international travel along with myriad networking opportunities. This scholarship has helped over 1,450 college students get an education. (Jackie Robinson)

The time has come again to celebrate the achievements of all black men and women who have chipped in to form the Black society. There are television programs about the African Queens and Kings who never set sail for America, but are acknowledged as the pillars of our identity. In addition, our black school children finally get to hear about the history of their ancestors instead of hearing about Columbus and the founding of America. The great founding of America briefly includes the slavery period and the Antebellum south, but readily excludes both black men and women, such as George Washington Carver, Langston Hughes, and Mary Bethune. These men and women have contributed greatly to American society. However, many of us only know brief histories regarding these excellent black men and women, because many of our teachers have posters with brief synopses describing the achievements of such men and women. The Black students at this University need to realize that the accomplishments of African Americans cannot be limited to one month per year, but should be recognized everyday of every year both in our schools and in our homes.
In order to be competitive in the higher education battleground, some academics believe that it’s essential that universities and colleges give minorities certain plus factors during the admission process. Many universities and colleges throughout the country believe that by instituting some form of affirmative action, the end result will be diversified campus demographics. The type of affirmative action each institution implements is different; however, each has the same goal of increasing minority admissions.
For centuries African Americans have fought for equal rights, one of them being an opportunity for the chance to get an equal education. Many people believe that African Americans have an equal or better chance at getting an education than other students. This is not the case when in fact, it is actually harder for these three reasons: African American students tend to come from harsh, poverty stricken atmospheres. Shattered family lifestyles that make it difficult to pursue a higher education because they have not received the proper information. Secondly, just because African Americans are minorities does not mean that they receive a vast amount of government assistance or financial aid to pursue a higher education. Lastly, African American students do not receive the same treatment as other students when they attend predominantly white colleges and universities.
Color can be a semiotic resource. It has many uses in the cultural association of signs. Some features that contribute as a signifier are saturation, purity, modulation, value and hue. Red can signify danger, green can stand for hope. In most countries black is a sign of mourning. However, in some parts of Europe, brides wear black for their wedding. In China and some other Eastern Asian countries, white is considered the color for mourning. While in America and most of Europe, white is a sign of purity and warn by brides. These contrasts of cultural semiotics make color partly unpredictable. In order for the color to function as a sign, there must be a consensus of meaning. In most cases there is not a consensus that is shared by all societies. There are some regularities and this is what makes color function as a semiotic resource. The challenge is understanding the motivations and interests of different groups. Some colors translate well and some do not. Finding these regularities within groups and applying them as semiotic resources is a challenge (Kress, 2002). Some associations to color are universal and these connections could spread as communication becomes more global (Eiseman, 2000).
Color theory encompasses a variety of definitions, concepts and design applications. Color theory to create a logical structure for the color. However, there are three main categories of color theory, which is logical and useful. They:
My current position on the executive board is Chief of Staff. I plan on collaborating with my club, ABC, as well as the Association for Caribbean Students(ACS), and the Association for African Students(ASA) to gather as many students who identify as Black to attend my general body meeting to promote the Gilman’s Scholarship and the importance of international education as a Black student. Since I am an active member of all three of the black student organizations it will not be a challenge to
In the art and the anthropology, the avatar chromaticity colors indicate the use of colors as a symbol in all cultures. Psychological chromatography refers to the effect of color on human behavior and emotions, as distinct from light indications. Moreover, avatar colorimetric and the color psychology are based on the cultural links with varying according to the era, place, and culture. In fact, one of the colors can have many symbols as well as different psychological effects in the same place. Broadly, the avatar colorimetric is a continuous field of ongoing studies relies on a wide range of anecdotal evidence heritage and also the scientific researches. Furthermore, no one has asked him/herself why he/she prefers a special color and the response is that according to the research, because the colorful dresses enhance your mood and lead to the atmosphere of fun, in contrast to the dark colors which indicate some of inwardness and sensitivity.
Those who have more school left ahead of them (in terms of credits) would have a better chance of getting a scholarship. This would mean prioritizing students who are entering college for the first time with no transferrable credits (high school AP course credits for example). This would make getting a scholarship harder for second year students, and students that may have taken time off of school. This principle is not necessarily the most sensible or just in this application because students who are very close to finishing but don’t have the last bit of funds to, and students that may have taken time off for medical or other critical reasons and are looking to return to their studies are at a serious
