When thinking of furthering my education, I had thought that going to school online would best suit my needs. There are several ways that I would explain to my younger self why going to school online through American Public University is a good choice. First I would explain my career goals, what degree I plan on pursuing. I would say that attending school online would allow myself to work at my own pace. Another reason I would point out is; by working at my own pace, I will be able to fulfill my other commitments in life. Other ways I would tell myself about why I plan on attending APU is that I enjoyed doing online High school. In addition I would tell myself that American Public University is a top rated college, which will allow myself to go further in the future. Lastly, the degree program will allow myself to have numerous future career paths. The main reason why I choose to pursue this degree is to eventually go into what is known as Child Life.
One important detail of my future I would share with myself is about all the different hospitalizations I had. During these hospitalizations for surgery, I had met a Child Life specialist. I would explain that a Child Life specialist is a person who works with pediatric patients to help them understand what is going on around them in the hospital. When explaining to myself about the duties of a child life specialist, they use different treatment methods such as, therapeutic play, talking to the child and family about a procedure, distraction during medical procedures, and medical education. I would remind myself that the staff at Mayo, Clinic has done those things with you, and it really helps you get through a rough time and not be so scared or anxious next time. I would explain that a Child Life specialist works with children to help with the emotional part of the hospital stay. While explaining my career choice, I would show myself that a child life specialist is educated in the field of Child Development to help a wide range of children, teens, and young …show more content…
adults. During the explanation for my career choice, I would further explain and show myself the curriculum of the Bachelors in Human Development and Family Studies. In addition to looking at the curriculum, and explaining to myself that there are many other career paths within this degree program. The other career options revolve around special needs children. The degree would allow me to work with children with developmental disabilities, help them achieve their developmental milestones. The degree also would allow me to help children who need to be adopted, both which are areas of my interest. Other ways that I would explain my reasoning for choosing American Public University is a reminder. I would remind myself that during my early school years, I did not like having to keep up with the other kids in the curriculum. In some subjects I was way ahead of the classmates, other subjects needed time to study. I would tell myself that going to school online would allow you to work at your own pace. This choice would also allow myself to further read into the subject matter. Working very hard and earning A’s . I would express to myself that during online high school you excelled and even got elected into the National Honor Society. I was able to do so by setting my own academic schedule. By setting my own academic schedule, I would able to attend physical therapy four times a week for an hour each time.
I also am able to make five-hour road trips up to Rochester and St. Paul Minnesota for medical care throughout the year. Having the flexibility in my learning would allow me to work on my degree from anywhere and anytime. I would even be able to work ahead of schedule like I am use to doing in high school if I know there is going to be an extended time in Minnesota for medical care. I would mention to my younger self that due to your frequent surgeries, you would be able to get a majority of your work done before hand. Another great feature of managing my own schoolwork and time would be the ability to volunteer for part of my degree during part of the day and work my courses around my schedule. Along with doing volunteer work, I would be able to eventually get a part time
job. The degree program for Human Development and Family Studies is part of a college that is top rated. World News Report has it one of the top colleges rated it for 2015. Within the degree program is many courses that would fit many career paths. One very important consideration for me would be that the Child Life Council has approved American Public Universities Human Development and Family Studies degree as a potential route for education for future Child Life Specialist. Within the program are many Child life specific courses such as the Child life Theory and Practice course. In the degree there courses allow me to be a step closer to being able to sit in the Child life Certification Exam. After this I would then be able to apply for a position as a Certified Child Life Specialist at a Children’s Hospital. There are multiple reasons why I believe that American Public University is the best choice for furthering my education. The program is highly rated, covers a plethora of possible career choices, and fits the qualifications for the Child Life Council. I have experience as an online learner and while doing so I was able to have a high grade point average. Having this degree program online also will allow me to work hard at my own pace, even accelerate completion of course work when needed. This degree program is the best first step toward my future.
I have always been interested in working with children. Becoming a teacher has always been a potential career path for me; however, I recently discovered the position of a child life specialist which has further broadened my interest for a future career. Although they are not educators in school, they are extremely important since they are the educators for children and their families to help overcome difficult and/or challenging life events. As a child life specialist I will be teaching children and families in hospitals how to cope with their diagnoses, how a surgery day will go, how certain lifestyles will have to change, and much more.
My future career goal is to become an anesthesiologist. An anesthesiologist administers an anesthetic to patients before going into surgery. They also have to keep monitor of vital life signs and make sure everything in the body is functioning properly while under the anesthetic. I think being an anesthesiologist is something I’d enjoy being because I like being in control. I like making sure people are okay and that is specifically what anesthesiologists do; they make sure the patient can’t feel any pain and is comfortable during surgery.
The idea of adoption has been around far longer than the formal legal system of adoption in place today. In the bible, there is a passage detailing the adoption of Ester by her cousin, Mordecai, after the death of her parents. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, and Babylonians all had their own systems of adoption. Adoption systems differ from country to country. United States citizens who internationally adopt today allow for the blending of cultures, languages, traditions, and ideals. In contrast, the practice of adult adoption in Japan is a particularly interesting system used quite differently and reflects a lot of traditional Japanese culture itself.
Childhood experiences tend to stay within a person 's life, including the ones that have taught you something as valuable as courage. For me, such experience that taught me how to be courageous, as I am presently, took place when I was about the age of 8. I was traveling with my family from one continent to another to reach our desired destination: America. Before, I had lived in the same city for as long as I remembered and knew everyone around me. I knew my whole village in and out like it was at the back of my hand and was comfortable in whatever corner I went. So as one could imagine, a hometown girl, who hasn’t been exposed to any other areas besides her birthplace, planted in an immense airport, in New York City, wouldn’t result pleasantly. When we were waiting for our
From the perspective I have at this stage in my journey in the early childhood education field, I would like to share what I have come to value and believe in regards to early learning and care by looking at my philosophy statement. To begin we will look at the statement and highlight three key features and find out why they are important to me, then we will see what they will look like in my practice, and lastly we will examine these ideas closely by looking at where they originated. By taking an in-depth look at my philosophy statement we will better understand the motivation behind my practice which I hope to continue to refine and refresh as I gain more knowledge and experience.
The career I chose to write about is nursing because since I was a little girl I have always felt antipathy taking care of people and learning about the human anatomy. Both of my parents believe that being a registered nurse will most suit me in the future. “Being a registered nurse provides coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members” (“Summary”). This means I will be caring for patients all around the clock at many different hours of the day. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary
What is childhood? To some its the upbringing and quality of life given to the child within the first several years of the child's life. In its simplest form, childhood is classified as the age span which ranges from birth to adolescence. During those years of childhood, most children go through various different physical and cognitive changes. According to the famous cognitive developmental theorist Jean Piaget, in psychology, childhood consists of four separate stages of development. Those stages are sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational, and formal operational stages. The sensorimotor stage extends from both to when the child first starts to grasp the concept of language. In the pre-operational stage is when the child starts
According to the Children Defense Fund 1 in 13 children will live in extreme poverty in the United States and a family of four is extremely poor if their income is below 10,000 or half of the official poverty line. It can contribute to behavioral problems, social and emotional problems, and poor health. Living in poverty affects how a chil...
Since the beginning of time, fathers have had a profound effect on their child’s development. Over the years, the norm for traditional family dynamics of having a father figure in the household has changed drastically, and so did the roles of the parents. It is not as common as it used to be to have a father or father figure in the home. In this day and age, women are more likely to raise children on their own and gain independence without the male assistance due to various reasons. The most significant learning experience and development of a person’s life takes place in their earlier years when they were children. There are many advantages when there is a mother and father combined in a
Poverty is “the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions” (Merriam-Webster dictionary, 2015); in other words, struggling to provide a comfortable living style. It is the cause of family stress and many other problems, especially for the children. Millions of people around the world are struggling with poverty; families suffering to provide enough food seem to be growing in numbers. According to the United States Census Bureau, the poverty rate was highest in the 1960s and decreased greatly in the 1970s. However, it is now slowly starting to increase again. Recently released census data by the Bureau showed that one in five people are living in poverty (Census Bureau, 2014). Poverty is even
This I Believe – Whether I like it or not, my childhood shaped who I am today.
Childhood is a time when significant events can and will leave impressions on oneself. It is not out of the ordinary that a large event will at least somewhat shape the mind of a child whether they realize it or not. One event that may have altered me somewhat was when I had to move from my old abode of Baileyton, Tennessee to Morristown to live with my grandparents. This was the result of my mother’s eventual passing after a losing battle with Cancer. Experiencing the “real world” so early may have changed how I think about and come to certain conclusions. I do not think this change in my life was necessarily a negative one, as I got to experience a lot of new things that I may have never had the chance to do. Sure, I had to grow up a bit earlier than your usual child, but I also probably reached a stage of maturity before most.
The death of a child is the most devastating loss a parent can ever experience. When a parent losses a child, something in the parents die too. The loss not only destroys the parents’, but also leaves an emptiness that can never be filled. The expectations and hopes of a future together are all just a dream now. Burying your child defies the natural order of life events: parents are not supposed to bury their children, children are supposed to bury their parents. Their life is forever changed and will never be the same. The parent not only mourns the loss of the child, but also mourns the loss of their child’s future. Parents will often visualize what their child could have been when they grew up or think about all the potential they had.

Experiences mold people into who they are destined to become. They teach lesson to the ignorant, inspire the stagnant, and spark the content. A person’s experiences write their past and present, and my experiences wrote a dramatic story. My story begins with a naive child who was blinded by the wicked’s of the world, but one day hell released it’s beast. The beast came in the form of shattering words cracking picture frames and smashing children's hearts. It tore a family into two and transformed this girl into an adult. The beast had hunted her down and handed her the role of a leading her siblings to success. But this evil didn’t gain power over the young child; inside of her it blossomed a caring heart that strived to ease the pain of others
