In today’s physical eduction world, there are a wide variety of ways to teach in a classroom. Every single student that enters a classroom has a different way of understanding things and each one has a different and unique way to learn information. This is true in every classroom, especially in the P.E. classroom. Each teacher may have a specific preference on how they want to teach their students, but in order for students to enjoy and learn about different aspects of P.E. each teaching style should be introduced. One of the many teaching styles is called Games for Understanding. This is not a commonly used style within the P.E. classroom but teachers should definitely start to get familiar with it. Teaching games for understanding, or TGfU …show more content…
All are important in the execution of this teaching style. The first step is introduction of the game. In this step the game is first introduced. But it should not be the full version of the game, it should be modified to give an idea of the more advanced game form. So if we say we were going to teach volleyball to students, instead of jumping right into a volleyball game or having the students try it, modify the game to get the students to come up with their own tactical way of playing. To start, split the students into two teams. One team on one side of the net and one on the other, tell the students they have to make three passes on their side then throw the ball over the net on the third pass. The second step is gam appreciation. Here you give the students a general understanding of the rules of the game. Explain to them the boundaries of the court and that in order for their team to get a point, the ball must hit the floor when tossed to the other side. The third step is tactical awareness. In this step students must identify with their team what tactics will wrk and what they need to do in order to win the game or activity. So here, the students would talk amongst their teammates to determine what will make them successful. For example, if they make quicker passes or throw the ball into a more empty space. The fourth step is decision making. Here the teacher asks thought provoking questions that get students …show more content…
Since there are so many other teaching styles and models, teachers may shy away from wanting to learn another way to teach a lesson. The TGfU model is a great way to teach games effectively by teaching tactical skills with skill development. This model is all about the progression of skills through modified steps of a game. This gives the students a chance to be exposed to primary rules, fundamental skills and tactical problems that they can apply to future games and even in life. “Tell me, I forget… Show me, I understand… Involve me, I
The first part of the series of articles The Physical Education Hall of Shame lists childhood games which are considered inappropriate for physical education classes. The author argues that some games are potentially unsafe, have minimal participation time factors, they are potential to embarrass the student in front of their classmates, and focus on eliminating students from participation. One of the harmful games is Dodgeball. Even though the game involves teamwork, strategy, and motor skills, the game might be dangerous, and also includes the highly skilled students. Another game mentioned by Williams is Duck, Duck, Goose. It is a game of a minimal participation, where generally five students
The tactical games model is an instructional method for a physical education class, the outline for a tactical game unit is set up as follows. The first step in any Tactical games model is to choose a sport for the class to play, team sports such as basketball or soccer typically work best for this model because they present the players with more tactical situations. Rather than full sized games your class will benefit more from smaller groups and faster paced games, any tactical issues a student is having during the sport will become more apparent this way and therefore easier to address (Pill). Additional adaptations can be made to manipulate the sport to your classes needs such as dimensions of the field, player’s movements, and the games rules (Pill). The Focus of game one is to put your students into challenging situations, by being challenged in the first game the students see areas they are lacking tactical experience. As the teacher your objective during game one is to iden...

Doing that involves an increasing mastery of skills, knowledge, and ideas." (Robinson, p. 119) The mentioned idea can be used to motivate students to participate in the learning process. The same way young children learn playing with others, the older child can do it experimenting and prove their theories. As a teacher is easy to noticed the difference between a lesson that is pure theory, and the lesson that incorporates creative factors. Students present a better behavior during the lesson, participate, interact, formulate questions and get the answers working together without
When deciding on instructional model teachers have to take things like gender and the base objective of the PE unit into consideration. The article states that Teachers preferred the tactical game model because students were more motivated when participating in this model. The TMG participants improve significantly in skill development declarative knowledge and game performance compared to other models (turner, 1996). Students would have a significant improvement in game play performance of skills and technical knowledge of the skill methods. This is partly because the environment of TMG supports the specifics of interactive behaviors in a classroom, increasing positive interaction and canceling out negative interaction giving students with lower skill levels a greater opportunity to learn. When students have more opportunities to learn, they are more motivated minimizing off-task behaviors creating a physically active atmosphere. Students enjoy the TGM because it increases their tactical ability and tactical awareness, allowing them to play at a higher game

Teaching Games For Understanding Model is the topic that I researched. This teaching model was created by Rod Thorpe and David Bunker from Loughborough University. The abbreviation for Teaching Games For Understanding Model is TGFU. This model was made for students to help educate them about the games they play in Physical Education. This learning model does not reflect on the performance from the student. It focuses on teaching student’s skills and key concepts in the classroom. There are six stages in TGFU that specifically target an important skill or concept that the student needs. The following six stages are Game Form, Game Appreciation, Tactical Awareness, Decision Making, Skill Execution, and Performance. All of these stages combine to make one goal of educating students with the skills and concepts they need in Physical Education, sports, and life.
Investigating these theories the focus must be on the implication they have on my practice. These are only useful in so far as they can help the learners achieve the lesson aims and objectives. (Wallace 2007:93)
The goal of this paper is to inform others of my reasoning why physical educators are important and why it is my dream to become one. There are three main points I would like to discuss: the value of physical education ,being a role model ,and why it is my dream to become one.
This learning concept allows students to gain an understanding of certain material by applying critical thinking to their areas of study. As a teacher in a physical education class, it is easy to involve these students by giving them an understanding of how the body moves as these types of kids will focus on fundamental aspects of physical performance. These logical learners tend to think about big picture versus small details and could do very well in a physical education class that also introduces anatomy. While incorporating the two subjects to the class these learners will be able to relate certain movements in the gymnasium to the anatomical makeup of each movement they have learned. Teachers also quite often see

Through my own experiences, and as enforced by others' opinions in the profession, I have found that teaching is one of the most rewarding careers. Not only are you placed in the position of instructing and guiding children and young adults through the life long learning process, but you are able to give back to the schools and communities which have supported your early education and experiences that opened you up to a bright future. In becoming an educator, I hope to someday share the knowledge and lend the helping, supportive hand that I was once given, allowing students to formulate their own perspectives of the multicultural society and world around them. Teaching is a career I have been interested in pursuing throughout high school, and as my experiences and study in the field expands, I feel that my desire to teach will grow stronger and develop more soundly.
When it comes to teaching, there are many different ways and types of methods you can use to teach your students. One of the most common ways of teaching is by using Sport Education. This type of teaching style is best used for elementary students. According to Daryl Siedentop, a professor from Ohio State University believes that class should teach kids about skills, teamwork, and the importance behind each sport or activity. Sport Education recreates the meaning behind gym class.
The second step in developing an engaging lesson is to focus on the instructional strategies used to help the students understand the material. It is at this point, the teacher decides what activities they will use to help address the “big ideas” or the “essential questions”.
